I have just spent some time in Latvia, staying at the "Grand Palace Hotel" in Riga. I highly recommend the structure for the elegance, comfort and kindness of its operators; furthermore, the price for a 5-star superior hotel proved to be very advantageous. Lastly, I want to point out the centrality of the structure in the old and splendid area of the city.

This is a nice hotel, with friendly, efficient, English-speaking staff that is in a great location and is very reasonably priced. It is located in the old town, but is also close to the Esplanade and Central market, as you can walk to both these locations. In the evening they bring you chocolate and bottled water. However, since Riga had not turned on the heat yet, the room was only 62 degrees farenheit, but the hotel gave me an electric heater. There is free wifi, toiletries are provided and an actual key is used. There is a tea pot, but no coffee maker, and they provide instant coffee. There is a mini-bar in the room and there is some space in the frig. that you can use. They offered breakfast for 25 euros, which I thought was king of steep, so I self-catered by buying breakfast items from the nearby express supermarkets. There is a small gym with four machines (rower, bicycle, treadmill and stepper, and the machines are right next to each other. LIght weights are also provided. The hotel has a restaurant and there are many near by.

Great location in heart of the attractive old town, this is the perfect place to stay. However, old cobblestone streets and many stairs into the hotel make this not a good place to stay if you have any mobility issues. No valet parking or any parking from what I could see. Fortunately we were always picked up and dropped off. The hotel exterior looks like an embassy. This confused us when we first arrived as it has a large plaque proclaiming that this is the Austrian consulate. The hotel manager apparently is also the consul for Austria. But, in these trying days surely it's encouraging that the manager has senough free time that he can do two jobs to support himself and doesn't have to go dumpster-diving to feed his family. The hotel interior is beautiful and very olde worlde as one would expect from an old building that has been converted into what one would normally call a "boutique hotel". Breakfast costs 25 Euros pp and is not really worth it. Had an omelette and experimented with an Eggs Benedict that was ok but not great. But, then again one has to go outside the touristy old town limits to get value for money. The carpet in the corridor to our room seemed a bit dirty but the room was good. A highlight for me was that the bed was the most comfortable I experienced in Scandinavia dn the Baltics. I slept reasonably well for the first time in a week. The very best part of the hotel that made our stay wonderful and delightful was that a parrot "Misha" lives in a cage in the breakfast restaurant. However, I was very happy that Misha is allowed to fly free for much of the day. Many times we would come back and walk through the room, find Misha perched on some furniture above my head, and we could have a chat with her relating our day. Misha is a great listener and makes interested noises as if to say, "Really?" and "Do go on"... Much better value than a therapist! I will miss Misha and will stay here again so long as Misha continues to fly free!

Terrible service, not worthy of a 5-star hotel. We arrived at the Grand Palace hotel, Riga to check in and parked our car at the designated hotel parking outside the front door. We waited to check in as there was another guest ahead of us. As we were checking in the first thing we mentioned is that we drove and have a car parked outside. The staff member never mentioned that we need a parking pass to avoid getting a ticket. The check-in took 10 minutes as the staff member explained the hotel amenities and showed us a map of the city. At the end of the conversation, we asked about the parking and where to park, finally he provided the pass, without mentioning that it needs to placed in the car immediately. We went to put our hand luggage in the room and went straight to the car to get remainder of luggage. Unfortunately we had received a parking ticket by this time. When we inquired with the hotel about this they said we can only park outside for 5-min without pass otherwise a ticket is issued. This was never explained to us, we are from Canada, we don’t know the rule of parking in Riga. This should have been told and explained very first thing when we arrived and mentioned we have a car. We were offered a credit towards the hotel parking surcharge to offset the ticket. Later we were told this is not possible and we have to also pay €30 for hotel parking by another staff member on duty. He didn’t believe us when we told him we were not advised of the ticketing policy or that we needed to place the pass in the car immediately. He said “I heard a different story from my colleague” insinuating that we were lying. I asked him to check the videotape of when we checked in and he finally agreed that we got the pass after the check in and not at the beginning, neither were we told about putting the pass in right away to avoid getting a ticket. We feel very uncomfortable by this situation and didn’t find the staff helpful at all. Don’t recommend staying here, they don’t know what good customer service is.

The grand palace was all you would expect of a 5 star hotel….in the ‘90s The bathroom was dated and our room had a ‘courtyard’ view of a wall so was very dark as a result. The pillows had also seen better days We ended up with new pillows from a pillow menu - they were good, but the desk were unable to move us. They did let us check out a day early though which was very much appreciated. We moved to the far superior grand kempinski.

Nice location in the old town. The staff is quite friendly and always ready to help. The rooms were fairly clean. Breakfasts also do not raise any questions. I would like to mention that both bartenders are pleasant to talk to and can always offer a great cocktail.
