The Antonius is a charming and luxurious boutique hotel in the centre of Tartu, directly opposite the university. On the four floors of the hotel, there are 27 rooms. The decoration and design of each room was carefully chosen and thought out, combining special colour and wallpaper patterns, wall paintings, fireplaces, stoves, and antique furniture. Some rooms have amazing views of nearby Tartu University, while others face the old town’s red roofs. The Antonius Hotel is located in a building with a long and dignified history, being first mentioned in the historical records of the 16th century. During the subsequent centuries the building was home to a hat shop, the Livonian Noblemen’s Manor House Credit Association, and the famous Guild of Saint Antonius.

Everything was really good: the most central location, car parked almost in front of the door, pet friendly, our dog was born in Tartu and we came actually to meet his relatives including mother and the owners. Breakfast was really good, we enjoyed a lot. Nice park for walking a dog was also very close. We experienced that Tartu is a very nice and pet-friendly city.

Dear guest, Thank you for this lovely review of Hotel Antonius! We are actively taking steps to become more pet friendly and we are glad to hear that our work has been noticed. Our central location is great for exploring the town and we do also have a few parks near the hotel. Furthermore, it is great to hear that you enjoyed the breakfast and had a wonderful visit to Tartu! We hope to welcome you back soon! Kind regards, Hotel Antonius team

Stayed in two different rooms this time, one was facing university main building and the second had a view to the courtyard. The only little minus both have is the noise. The one facing the courtyard was very quiet during the night but before that there is a terrace of the restaurant outside. So everything is echoing in this little courtyard. But yes, when it closes it was very quiet after that. And the one facing the university - it's just general outside noise your hear as windows are not soundproof. Nothing too loud but some people just love their cars to rally. The noise was not any problem for me but if you are a light sleeper you should know.
Otherwise both rooms were very lovely and cozy. And I do love the big windows with the view to university. And separate bath additionally to the shower.
Breakfast was still served to the room due to the virus. So you have to make your choice the night before (food and time). I think I have tried everything in the menu over the time and I like it all, hot and cold, except for the granola with its chewy bits...
I also ordered from the restaurant both evenings. It was served to the room again. Everything was very tasty (Pavlova meringue cake - just heaven! caramelized cauliflower, curd cheese balls - from the childhood).
The service is always nice and warm, so was it this time. Just probably the training for new people has not been thorough enough. So the boy in the reception did not know about ordering from the restaurant and the girl bringing the breakfast did not notice to take the empty dishes from the previous evening with her. It's not any major issue but one just does not expect it from the hotel like Antonius.
All together, the price and the value of the stay is just really great right now (66 euros per night 1 person in a double room).

The location is perfect as it is right in the center of town yet not directly overlooking a street with busy nightlife so you can get a good nights rest. The room was charming and made us feel immediately comfortable. The historic building gives the hotel a warm and cozy character that just makes you want to spend time there, we skipped some planned activities just to stay in the room and relax. This is a breath of fresh air in an industry dominated by large hotels with clinically cold ultra-modern design and a total lack of any personality. The service was very professional, extremely helpful at all times and yet totally unintrusive. We liked this hotel so much we are planning another visit to Tartu just to stay there again.

We stayed at the suite with a bath that has windows facing the street side. The room was close to 300 EUR per night and for that amount of money the experience was quite poor.

Starting form the general look of the room - it was antique in design and as such some wear is expected but the overall impression of the room was not well maintained and lacked attention to detail that is expected of such a luxury room:

* there was black mold on caulking of the bathroom;
* the wall behind the card holder, that turns on the room lights, had a fist sized dent in it where the wallpaper was dug out and plaster was visible
* the kettle could only be plugged in when set on the floor
* many of the light bulbs of the chandelier were not lighting up
* one of the bedside lamps had a significantly colder color temperature than the lights of the rest of the room, giving the impression of reading in a hospital room

But this all nothing in comparison to the terrible sleep we had at the room. Every single street sound was clearly heard in the room. Since the room faces a busy street it was well into the night until the cars driving by no longer were keeping us form falling asleep.

To compound this issue the noise of the AC in the room is unbearably loud and even when turning it off some other ventilation system keeps whirring away. Finally the air quality in the room was terrible - it was so dry and dusty that even when all other problems were non issues the runny nose and dry throat it instantly caused would have made sleep difficult.

Breakfast is served à la carte but the service was so slow that the 30min we had time to eat was not even enough time to even get our order in so we had to make due with the dried out cheese and deviled eggs at the sandwich table.

While non of the issues in isolation (except for the poor sleep) were necessarily bad, given the price and the amount of issues they add up and the whole is simply not worth it. Overall I wouldn't choose this experience again even if I was paid the amount it cost me to have.

Dear guest, Thank you for sharing your thorough feedback with us! We are very sorry to hear that your stay did not meet your expectations. We took all your comments into account and have made improvements in the hotel room. Since the hotel is located in the Old Town of Tartu, the Ülikooli street might be a bit busier during evening but it is usually very quiet during night time - we are saddened to hear that the traffic on the street affected your sleep negatively. We apologize for the inconveniences and are very grateful for your feedback! Kind regards, Hotel Antonius team

Stepping into Hotel Antonius’ cosy reception we were welcomed by Adele. She kindly explained all the details about our stay and said the she has prepared us a special room. We had booked Superior room (it’s their so-called lowest category) and we stayed at room 104, which is actually a Superior room. Stepping into the room we did not quite understand, what may be so special about it. But then we discovered an enormous bathroom, with shower and bathtub. It was as big as the room itself. It was a masterpiece and we could not stop thinking about the fact, that our future home should have the same kind of bathroom. We loved it! Again, the bed was as comfy as it is always and view to the courtyard saved us precious sleep time. Hotel Antonius is located in the middle of old town, so it is totally understandable, that there might be some cheerful noise coming in the room at the middle of the night, but the courtyard view saved us from that small trouble. In addition, we had our dog with us and she was welcomed with huge bag full of sachets filled with treats and food. At the morning we were welcomed by Kristelle who served us with waitresses the best scrambled eggs and pancakes in Tartu. They are indeed the best, I promise. I can not pass by the fact, that hotel was nice and cool. These summer days have been too hot these days and we and our dog enjoyed working AC to the fullest. Thank You, team Antonius, for treating us so well! Until the next time!

The Antonius hotel is really good spot to stay. Cozy rooms have their own character and the warm bathroom floor is a guarantee for not to get cold after bath. It’s possible to regulate the room temperature if needed. You can order breakfast from the breakfast menu with no extra charge of course however for me and kids the assortment of cold cuts, pastries and fruit was quite enough.

I usually book a stay in a superior room which is the smallest of the rooms but this particular room I stayed was just huge (including a separate nuke with a round dining table, several chairs and large windows to courtyard; seemed quite nice for a possible candlelight dinner while the snow is snowing outside or something like that). So I cannot be sure what was the category of the room and maybe I was upgraded. I stayed alone this time so would have actually preferred something more cosy. But as I worked the whole daytime this large space was useful for walking around and stretching.
There was a little working table in the room, too, additionally to this larger round dining table. Plugs near it so one can conveniently charge its laptop.
The room has both a bathtub and a shower so that is really nice. This time there were also bath-salts available. I have not noticed these before so it's a really nice new touch.
I also ordered dinner as a room service (new menu compared to my last visit; ordered duck liver pate, perch soup and honeycomb crunch). Really interesting and bold flavors (does anyone know how suira ice cream taste?). Just a total pleasure in every way.
Although.. and here come some little annoying things. As my order crashed partially behind my door I had to wait for a new soup. And meanwhile the ice cream was melting in my room, dishes were smudgy from the crash and the girl did not notice that. Of course things happen and that was not a big deal, but I somehow would have waited for a little notice of that by the team, for example not charging for the room service or something. But that did not happen so all this pleasure was a little bittersweet.
Regarding the sleeping quality, for me the bed and mattress are really comfortable. Pillow is always too high for my liking, that issue I already know and I just try to ignore it. This time I also noticed their ventilation system is quite loud so be aware of that if you are a light sleeper. Otherwise the room is so nicely quiet this time of the year. All together I think the value for the price of the room is really good at workdays.

A hotel with old time charm located right opposite the Tartu University. The building itself has a long history and it is renovated and preserved with taste. The superior room was nice with a big double bed and bathroom with a tub.
It was a bit chilly in the room but a friendly front desk person quickly fixed this minor issue by providing an extra heater.
Breakfast was served in the basement restaurant. There was a generous, tasty buffet and warm dishes were prepared for personal request.
The service was impeccable; smiling and polite. Some parking places can be found beside the street in front of the hotel and more (cheaper) spots are available nearby.
If I ever come back to Tartu, I will definitely stay here again.

Hi again Jim I answered too quickly. Fellin restaurant is in Viljandi. When I re-read your question, I realized Viljandi is not on your itinerary. It is not too much of a detour off the Tallinn - Tartu direct route. You might consider making a minor detour. The old town of Viljandi and the castle are quite interesting. And ... You could have lunch at Fellin. George Koons
