#3 of 16 B&Bs / Inns in Haapsalu
In the Paralepa park forest, about 3 km from the city centre of Haapsalu, you will find Ungru Bed and Breakfast. If you take a short walk through the forest, you will reach the sandy Paralepa beach. In Paralepa park forest it is nice to bicycle or just hike or walk. Good to know: you are surrounded by peace and quiet, so why not order an additional massage service for better relaxing.

We were sailing in Estonia and rented a car on a rainy day. We were so happy to find and visit Ungru for a beautiful lunch! Best fresh&local ingredients. Very good service. Perfect atmosphere. I am really considering to travel here again all the way from Finland just for the nice location and great food. You should go and see for yourself!

During our travel by ferry to the island of Hiiumaa the landlord phoned us to be informed about our time of arrival. He also told us that as of 15 September the restaurant was closed because the season was over. The island stood now in ease. That wasn't an issue for us. Most restaurant are closed. There is an excellent restaurant next to the airport of Kärdla, approximately six kilometers from the B&B, where can have a great lunch. Together with the great breakfast in the morning at the B&B you will not starve. The B&B is situated in an old building; the rooms are spacious, clean, a shower/toilet room and a comfortable bed. We visited the B&B three nights in the end of September 2018. It was stormy outside and at least one tour of the ferry was cancelled because of the storm. Inside it was nice and cozy.

My wife and I found ourselves going to Hiiumaa for a theatre production and we decided to give this B&B a try. To our pleasant surprise, this hotel has a great restaurant where we enjoyed not only dinner before the theatre, but also, drinks afterwards. The service staff was very welcoming and professional. Our room was the “Hioma”, it was spacious and well appointed. The morning breakfast is not to be missed. We had made-to-order eggs, oatmeal, coffee, and even dark chocolate. One would pay at least 15€ per person in the city for such a breakfast. Here, it is included in the room. I suggest if you find yourself planning a trip to Hiiumaa, this is the place to stay.

We stayed a night here in late October. The owner had contacted me a couple days before to ask what time we would arrive. At that point, I was informed that the restaurant was not open in the off season, but that there would be someone there to cook breakfast. This was a bit disappointing as this was not mentioned during booking. When we did arrive (around 4:30 pm or so), as arranged, the keys were left on the front desk for us. We happened to be the only people staying there, so we had the entire place to ourselves. It was a bit spooky, but in a good way. The grounds around the hotel are lovely, even in the cold weather with the harbor shut down for the season. It has a very rustic feel. We had rented the suite, which was the biggest in the establishment. The room itself was very nice, and good sized, with wooden floors. The views to the sea were great and the bed was comfortable and huge. The bathroom is a bit on the small side, with a small shower stall, but all is very nicely appointed. There were no bath robes, unfortunately. We did initially have an issue that we had no cell phone service and the owner had forgotten to provide us with the wi-fi password. But luckily, minutes before we left the room to drive towards the small town where we could get service so we could call him, I found the wi-fi password on a tiny slip of paper in a decorative bowl on the coffee table. It did function quite well when we were able to log in. The breakfast in the morning was very delicious, with a plate of a fried egg, potatoes, various other vegetables and juice and coffee. More than enough to start your day right. Overall, we enjoyed our stay and the room was absolutely lovely. However, be aware that in the off season, there is very little open in the area. We were forced to have lunch and dinner at a brewpub about 20 km or so away, given that almost all the restaurants in town are either closed or don't stay open past the afternoon. So, you've been warned. But if you like being out of the way and in a quiet area, it really does fit the bill.

The Hotel / Restaurant has a unique location with lots of nature nearby while also close to the tiny airport / largest town of Hiiumaa (Kärdla) from/to which they kindly provided transportation for us. The personnel all speak perfect English, provide tips and excellent service. A beautiful room (with view!) and good food for a reasonable price on an almost undiscovered island make us definitely want to come back for more!
