Kalma is on the pedestrian street in Heviz. Distance to the lake is about three minute walk, the closest hotel apart from the spa hotel actually on the lake.

We travelled via R C I and it would actually have been cheaper to have booked direct! We had a studio room which was basically a smallish hotel room with a tiny kitchen area, fridge etc and a microscopic bathroom with an excellent shower.

The hotel restaurant is very good indeed for lunch although the breakfast looked poor. There are many very good restaurants within walking distance or within a cheap taxi ride of the hotel.

There is a jacuzzi and sauna area. Very clean. Nowhere to sit outside other than a very small balcony.

Good location, helpful staff, cleanness, spacious room, everything perfect except the building's concept.
Built around an atrium, with the restaurant on ground floor, all the noise from the restaurant and smell from the kitchen comes up to the rooms.

The room had a loft with king bed and a roll out couch downstairs. It has small kitchen with everything you would need. The big thing was it has 2 bathrooms ! The only thing that sucked was that wifi is not free and you had to log back in all the time. Breakfast was good. Location is great.

Stayed there in March 2024! This hotel or whatever it should be called, in my opinion is not worth spending money on, there is a really bad service. The staff are not able to speak foreign languages very well, and when they are confronted with shortcomings and poor service, they suddenly cannot understand what you mean. Breakfast is only from 8:30 and at such a low gastronomic level that it is not worth the money. I have never experienced such a lousy breakfast, old bread and a lousy selection. Their parking garage is made of gold, if you want a rental car down there and stand, you have to be prepared to pay a small fortune for parking, I paid in December 2023 €54 for 3 days. A parking garage that can house 5-6 fiat 600, you get in an alm. estate car, you need to be a skilled driver to get around. If you have to use a dressing gown, then you pay the tidy sum of DKK 40 per daily rental of a dressing gown, which I believe should be standard in the rooms. We've had a good piece of beef on their menu in the past, but this time turned out to be a nightmare. We both order a good steak, and one must be well done, where it turns out we are served a raw piece of meat with a roast crust. 3 times it's back in the kitchen before they have to admit they can't roast a piece of beef, we're forced to order something else from the menu. I could go on for a long time about this hotel, but the conclusion must be, it's not worth it, and for God's sake don't spend money on it!

The staff were unhelpful. Customer service does not appear to be in their vocabulary. We purchased a package including Dinner on Christmas on 25th December. Dinner was poor, options were not explained. The desert pancakes were too salty, Prices and options were not explained properly. The underground parking was so narrow so that my car needed to have been on a diet to fit into the spaces. Breakfast was advertised for 08.30 but it was not ready till 08.45. We were told that the Sauna and whirlpool bath would be available form 09.00 but at 09.15 we had to ask for the Sauna to be turned on and when we asked when the whirlpool bath would be turned on we were told "we don't know".

Overpriced, ordinary Hotel in an already expensive overpriced town.

We stayed in the Apart Hotel which is an annex to the Kalma one block away. Our room was in the attic with sky lights not windows so the sun baked the room when the temperature reached 95 degrees outside. In an evening we could not open the windows because the restaurant below had loud music until late at night.

The bed was two singles pushed permanently together- no good if you wanted space and no good for snuggles.

There was not even a bar of soap in the room let alone shower gel. The cooking facilities were basic but adequate.

You should definitely visit Heviz but stay somewhere else that has air conditioning and doesn't have the gaul to charge for WiFi.

Hotel Kalma has by far the most friendly and helpful staff.Try taking the apartment facing the main stret and cinema hall--it is pretty and entertainment is on.In the evening when every one is through with their spa treatments they come and sit on the flower lined street benches and relax to the violin played by streetside musicians--it is theatre created you on the road on which you have a private balcony seat and your own hungarian rose vino! What could be more enchanting. Howeverer keep this in mind that it is an exquisite spa town that ceases all activity at 9 pm.The hotel has an excellent restaurant though you can can cook in your own apartment if you like.Jaccuzziis excellent and I treated myself to it every morning. They even arranged for a hot air balloon ride where we had a blast .

I made the reservation for Hotel Kalma 4 days before our arrival. I immediately got message from my bank that money were taken. And after 5 minutes I got another message saying that more money were taken by the same hotel. Just like everywhere this hotel should give you space to maybe pay in cash. When we arrived the receptionist admitted they made a mistake with charging more money and offered to pay back with Ft (Hungarian money) which we didn't need. Also, the breakfast was awful, one of the worst I've been given. The rooms were good and clean. They charge wifi, they charge parking...the list can go on.

Response from AbbaziaGroup, General Manager at Hotel Kalma
Responded Mar 19, 2015
Dear Guests! We are very sorry that after a few missunderstanding you wrote such a negative comment about our Hotel. Let us answer to you: You booked 2 appartments for 1-1 person, after that you arrived the Hotel for 4 persons. The price for 4 persons a little higher then for 2. That was the reason why my coullege charged the extra money (for the another 2 persons) from your credit card. You ignored my coullege 's helpful behavior, shouted with him and behave agressive but they were doing right. Meanwhile the recepction called Booking .com helpdesk to clear the situation, but you also ignored to speak with them, actually Booking.com confirmed our review. The parking and the wifi connection must paid for every guests who come our Hotel, but having regard to the situation, and you do not have negative experiences, we disregarded from paing this services. Altough the price for the 2 plus guest should be paid, my coullege gave back the difference in cash 7200.- HUF (cca 25 € ) because we would like to you leave satisfied. You also disapprove of charging the money in advance from you credit card. You booked (via Booking.com) the "non-refundable" price, and in this case we charged the credit card in advance. According to Booking.com conditions of non-refundable prica is: "Payment: The total price of the reservation may be charged anytime after booking ( here you can find the conditions of non-refundable price: http://www.booking.com/hotel/hu/hotelkalma.html?sid=b1d4f55a4863e8b95774c851c8f34c65;dcid=4;checkin_monthday=15;checkin_year_month=2015-4;checkout_monthday=17;checkout_year_month=2015-4;no_rooms=1;req_adults=2;req_children=0&) Regards, The management of Hotel Kalma

Getting there
It's a pain to get to Heviz from Budapest but worth it. Plan on a 5 hour trip. When you land in the airport, take the 200E bus to the Metro Station. Take the (blue) Metro 3 towards Ujpest, varoskapu. Exit at Deak Ferenc ter station. Transfer to the (red) Metro 2 and go towards Ors vexer tere. Exit at Keleti palyaudvarto get to the train station. Buy a ticket to Kesthely. The regular train tickets are in cars without air conditioning. There are compartments with ac. Make sure to sit in the first 4 cars on the train because near Lake Balaton, the last cars go somewhere else. The train ride is between 3-4 hrs. When you arrive at Kesthely, the bus station is right there - the one to Heviz is the first one. We took a cab which was pretty inexpensive. If you take the bus to Heviz (and are facing the driver), head to the right. The hotel is in the middle of a walking street about 3 streets down. You can also take a bus directly from the Metro station to Heviz which has ac and takes a little over 3 hrs. We did that on the return trip. With the train, you get beautiful views of Lake Balaton and the countryside.

There is a local airport - Fly Balaton with flights into some German cities.

Amenities
There is a little store across the street from the hotel. The hotel has a jacuzzi, hot sauna and nice restaurant. Tourist info is close to the hotel as are many clothing shops. Other than the front desk, not many people speak English but it all works out.

Hotel staff
Fantastic! I especially liked the front desk man with glasses - he was so friendly, funny and helpful.

Rooms
The rooms are clean and comfortable. Our room overlooked the pedestrian street so we got to hear the street violinist play every night. What a treat.

Lake Heviz
We went every day. You can buy a cheap pool noodle everywhere or borrow one from the hotel. The hotel sells 4 hr tickets for 10% discount. The Lake Balaton card sold at the Tourist Info isn't worth it - there is a deposit but no fee.

Sites
Make sure to see the Roman ruins at Egregy. We took a nice walk there to see the wineries, the old church from the 13th century and attached graveyard. There are amazing fields of sunflowers but you have to go through the path above the church and the hobbit house. The path is to the right through the trees. Stay on the right every time there is a fork. When you see a sign (I think it directs left to Heviz), go straight and the fields will be there.

Overall, a very relaxing vacation. We checked out a day early, took the 9:20 am bus and visited Budapest for the day. We stayed overnight at Bo18 and had a relaxing time getting to the airport the next day.

The hotel itself need some renovations. TV are abt 15-20 years old. Location is good and abt 5 minutes from the lake. At lake complex the temperature inside the building was very cold /abt 20-22 degrees/and after swimming it was necessary to put on warm clothes and to drink warm tea. All discussions with administaration /information desk, administrator, manager/did not change situation even to do something with windows through which the cold air came inside and they had big holes which were possible to close if the temperature could not be increased by heating the building. All previous years at the same period the temperature inside was abt 27 degrees which was comfortable to feel yourself after swimming. This year we were forsed to go away after swimming in order not to catch the flew and at the end loose hours for visits which were prepaid at the beginning. Therefore if you are not interested to relax at cold building it is better not to buy 20 hours visit but to pay only for 10 hours and than to have a decision as what to do
