We had a trip to Budapest at the end of May in this year. I read good comments about the hostel so I was sure I made the right choice. Adviced my friends Avenue Hostel for a one-day overnight stay. There were three of us, all three female tourists, and we were going to book a bed in a room. We needed a signed document (invoice) from the hostel for our trip. We made the reservation from the hotel's website and chose the same room. I wrote to whatsapp and at the same time via email to the hostel administration to send us a confirmation document regarding the order and payment. It lasted almost more than ten days , which was to be solved in one day, I had to write many times and request the document. I received late responses, and sometimes they couldn't find our orders due to confusion in their system. Finally, they got our documents in order. We arrived at the hostel, it turned out that the reservation shows different rooms in the system. Despite the fact that we made all three order in the same room and mentioned the lower bed bunk, we could not prove anything. The guy at the reception called Nika (or Niko) was very rude, unpolite and said the same things over and over again. "Please do not disturb our guests, do not ask anyone to change their bed. "It was a very discriminatory attitude, disrespectful behaviour towards other guests. Instead of acknowledging the messed up situation in their own reservation system, the reseption just continued to be rude. The lady next to him just watched calmly, did not intervene in the situation. We could not complain to the hostel administration because we did not have much time. The system did not show the notes attached to the order on the website, we could not prove it later. This was an unpleasant experience we had with the hostel staff. Although the hostel is located in the center, the window of the room faced the highway. The hostel itself was very noisy. It was impossible to sleep comfortably. The floor looked unclean because the shower rooms were entered with shoes.

A hostel as good as any. There was no aircondition in the 6-man room I was in which meant the temperatures were quite humid and hot in the night. They left a huge floor fan which only settings were extreme, more extreme and plainly ridiculous. It did not even turn back and forth so it had to be directed into a blank wall to ensure at least a bit of circulation in the room. Need I say it was very, very noisy? Like, it was the kind of fan you could use as a propeller on the back of a river boat. Furthermore, they charge 7 euros, equivalent to 3000 HUF, to borrow a towel and then they keep half of it when you return it. They also insist that it is somehow impossible to do this transaction by card and so they told me to go outside and walk across the street to an ATM which charged some 40% fee for it, then come back and then try again. Out of despite I did not do it. Cleanliness were quite good. They have rigorous cleaning routines which they carry out around 11. They do not hesitate to barge in and start their cleaning without showing any consideration to people that may still are sleeping - so if you are in need to catch up on some sleep this is obviously not the place to be. The staff were nice enough but they didn't give me that feeling of wanting to go beyond themselves to ensure that I had a pleasant stay with them. Overall I give this hostel a rating of 6/10.

Though the rooms are hot, the service was great. Met a lot of friends and people to explore the city with during the free walking tour with kunar. Such a great experience, highly recommend taking a tour with him as it helps make the hostel experience so much better. Very fun atmosphere, would come back!

Please do NOT visit this hostel in summer, or if the weather will exceed 30^C. The rooms are unbearably hot. There is no air con and the building just traps in the heat, we actually couldn’t sleep. We booked 3 nights but after 1 night we checked out and got an Airbnb with air con. The breakfast is awful but it’s free so can’t complain. The bed sheets clearly aren’t washed between guests because they smell like sweaty men. This place seriously needs air conditioning it would make it a great hostel. Also the shower and toilets are gender shared so they are a bit grim and I felt quite uncomfortable showering

My review is excellent because of the tour provided by Kumar. His sense of humour certainly made the trip enjoyable as well as his knowledge of history; Kumar took us around Budapest and showed us the main historical places as well as telling us some facts about the places of interest we visited. Overall, a highly enjoyable tour and a very welcoming stay with great staff. Very very pleased.

Kumars free walking tour was really incredible. Me and my boyfriend went on it today and he took us round many historic monuments such as the parliament building. He gave us lots of useful information we wouldn’t have got on our own and it was a great group of people and atmosphere. There were lots of laughs along the way and you could tell he had put lots of effort and thought into it! Definitely recommend !!!

Stayed at the Avenue Hostel for a couple nights and was accommodated very nicely. The staff are brilliant here, including Kumar who helped my mate and I book an extra night for a very fair price. 10/10 would highly recommend the Avenue Hostel.
