I’m generally a fan of Luxury Collection hotels, and Matild Palace is a great addition to the brand. It was the perfect home base for me to explore Budapest for the first time, with a great location away from the throngs of tourists but still close enough to walk to all the major sights. However, the housekeeping team could use some more training – once this is fixed, this hotel would be absolutely perfect!
All the staff I met were wonderful, whether it’s the concierge (shout-out to Zsigmond, who coordinated transport and helped confirm tours for me!) or the front desk or the room service team. They were all so friendly and eager to help, and you could tell that they really want their guests to have the best stay possible.
The rooms are spaciously designed in comparison to most European hotel rooms, and the bathroom is beautiful. Luxury Collection has the best hotel beds IMO and the Frette linens are a plus, I loved my bed so much it was hard to get out and go sight-seeing because I just wanted to lie in bed all day!
And while in-room dining doesn’t really have any vegan options, there’s a lovely vegan restaurant right behind the hotel called Napfenyes where you can get delicious vegan meals and cakes to go.
Now the ugly part: housekeeping isn’t really up to standard. Some of the linens were stained, and there were visible dust bunnies on the floor. Bedlinens were not changed for 4 nights, and on my last night, the bed was made so poorly it was like a reluctant teenager did it. The same housekeeping staff also left used toilet paper in the toilet bowl, and forgot to replenish the towels. Maybe they were rushing to get home since it was a Sunday?
The worst part though was that there was a toenail clipping leftover on the floor by the previous guest, which is one of the more disgusting things you can find in a hotel room.
I saw it when I first checked in, and waited 2 days but the housekeeping team still did not clear it even though it was in a prominently visible area right outside the bathroom door. On the 3rd day I finally called Guest Services to have the housekeeping staff come and clear it because I just couldn’t keep looking at it. When the housekeeping staff arrived, she was bewildered that she had to come just to clear this toenail.
As a guest, you can’t really explain how toenail clippings left on the floor is simply unacceptable at a 5-star hotel. This is something that has to be taught at a training level, that hotels of this tier need to uphold a more stringent standard of cleanliness and attention to detail.
I feel like I’ve used the word toenail far more than I’d ever like to when writing about a hotel.
Anyway, with some improvement in housekeeping standards, I would be more than happy to come back to the Matild Palace on my next trip to Budapest because everything else is top notch!

This hotel has small(by USA standards) comfortable rooms in a prime location to sightsee and shop.
Admittedly, we brought a lot of luggage, so we felt cramped. Most folks probably would have no problem with the room size. There are a few drawers and a closet, but we still had to live out of our suitcases. We could not unpack!
It is a short walk to both Christmas Markets, which is what we were in town to see. There are also dozens of restaurants and bars in walking distance.
The concierge and bell staff are friendly, helpful and speak English!
The bathrooms are beautifully appointed and have rainfall shower heads and large soft towels! And heated floors! What a luxury.
The room has plenty of USB ports for charging and a Nespresso machine for your morning coffee.
There are two hotel bars. The bartenders are not overly generous with their pours, but make great craft cocktails.
The hotel restaurant is Spago, by Wolfgang Puck. The breakfast buffet is very good if it is included in your rate. It is terribly overpriced if you have to pay for it : $40.00!
All in all, I would recommend this place and I would stay here again. I would just bring fewer clothes.

Dear TVDad, Thank you for sharing your detailed experience! We’re thrilled you enjoyed your stay and found the hotel’s prime location ideal for sightseeing, shopping, and exploring Budapest’s festive Christmas markets. It’s great to hear you appreciated the cozy comfort of the rooms, even if space felt a little tight with extra luggage. The beautifully appointed bathrooms, complete with luxurious rainfall showerheads, soft towels, and heated floors, sound like they added a touch of indulgence to your stay. We’re glad the modern amenities, such as USB ports and the Nespresso machine, enhanced your convenience. It’s also wonderful that you had a chance to enjoy the hotel's bars and Spago by Wolfgang Puck—though we understand your perspective on the breakfast pricing. Thank you for highlighting the friendliness and helpfulness of the concierge and bell staff. Their dedication to service is a cornerstone of our commitment to guest satisfaction. We’re glad to know you’d stay with us again and recommend the hotel. We look forward to welcoming you back—next time, with lighter luggage and just as much excitement for another fantastic visit! A lot to digest? Read an AI-generated summary of recent traveler reviews.
The check in at the hotel was extremely good and the look is amazing. The hotel is in a great location and everything is very easy to get to. I am a Gold Elite member at Marriott. I was greeted accordingly. The only thing I find stupid is that when we checked in we were told that we had received an upgrade, but it wasn't an upgrade at all, it was just the category we had booked. The room was extremely clean and the staff was very attentive. The rooms are well equipped and you feel very comfortable. The beds are inviting and the bathroom is extremely well equipped.
I would have praised housekeeping for having their service so well under control. But now comes this! After checking in, the room is cleaned like in any hotel. Unfortunately, this task is apparently not taken too seriously, because on all days things were either not done at all or only partially. It seems a little as if the rooms are only treated well when a new guest checks in. Bathrobes that were thrown with the dirty towels were simply hung up again. Facial tissues were not refilled. The room was not tidied at all, so not everything could have been cleaned.
I think it's a shame that you survive such a great surprise when you check in and find such a great room, and the days after are somehow irrelevant.
After 10 p.m., there was simply nothing left to eat at room service. The reason given was that the chef didn't show up, which isn't really of interest to me when it comes to five stars. Then pizza had to be ordered from outside, which took an extremely long time.
The bottom line is that I will definitely visit the hotel again because of the location, the facilities and the cleanliness.
However, my expectation is that this standard accompanies the guest throughout their entire trip and not just when they check in.
Please improve, dear housekeeping.

I did not think a perfect hotel existed but Matild Palace is just that. A wonderful mix of historic, classic, and every modern gadget you could ask for. We were warmly welcomed and immediately our bags were whisked out of our hands to be replaced with a glass of champagne. Check in was smooth, we felt like they were genuinely happy to have us and we were upgraded to a room with an amazing view of the Danube Drapes, blinds, lights all work on a convenient keypad by the bed. The mini bar was fully stocked with free water, juice, and soft drinks and replenished everyday. It did not seem to matter if we just went downstairs for breakfast and came back in an hour or were gone all day the room was always made up and perfect on our return. Each night we looked forward to a little gift left bedside that never repeated. The beds, bedding, towels all first class and you can’t help but have a wonderful sleep there. The windows open so you hear the sounds of a big city but close them and nothing. Again perfect. The bathroom deserves a whole post of its own. Electric toilet, huge deep soaking tub, rain shower with amazing pressure, double sinks, thick luxurious bath sheets, towels and wash cloths. And the tall windows letting in tons of natural light. Pure bliss. They also have an amazing spa in the basement but no pool or hot-tub due to it being a heritage building. Steam room, sauna and the treatments were first class and again warm welcoming staff. Location was perfect to walk to all the tourist sights and you have more restaurants within a 10 minute radius than you could ever want. Christmas markets, parliament buildings, Buda castle all an easy walk. We used the airport bus which was cheap, dropped us close by and quick using bus lanes rather than sitting in traffic. My son and I had a great time exploring Budapest and could not be happier that we picked this hotel for our stay. The management team has done a great job of hiring the best staff and training them to produce the first perfect stay. You will not be disappointed here.

This is one of those unique hotels you’ll be glad you visited. Beautifully situated on the Pest side of the river, this hotel has easy access to most places in Budapest. This was such a pleasant surprise after a lackluster experience at a five star hotel in a previous city. We were greeted with a glass of Prosecco at check in and that started our love affair with this hotel. Check in was quick and efficient and we went to our room on the top floor. The rooms have automatic curtains and lighting that turn on and open up and offers an incredible “ta-da!” upon entering the room. The bathrooms are glittering blue and gold and marble with bidet style toilets that open upon entering the bathroom. The whole room seems to come to life on its own! We had a top floor room with a small veranda that gave us a peek at the city and Elizabeth bridge. The room is beautiful with so much attention to design detail, such as the art nouveau stitched headboards and stocked and full minibar area with lovely glassware and nice selection of coffee and tea. We were happy to also have a tea kettle for our instant Starbucks coffee we always bring. The room was spotless, service was perfect and friendly at every point of contact. The attached Spago restaurant made for easy dining and the rooftop bar offers excellent views and terrific service. This hotel is in a glorious old building that feels fresh yet connected to its history. The spa services were adequate and were the only slight disappointment. However, we had a problem, and many times you find out how well service fares when a problem occurs. The problem was utterly my fault as I had I left a pair of diamond earrings in the safe. My husband called and told the front desk about it and they had found them and arranged to send them to our home in the US arriving two days later. Are we fans of Matilde Palace? Absolutely. It was a great hotel experience and we would happily stay there again.

The Matild Palace is one of the finest hotels I have ever stayed in. Every single aspect of our 4 night stay was exemplary. Our visit started when Ester checked us in and carefully explained the hotel and its many amenities. Traveling with my partner and a friend, we had two superb rooms with amazing bathrooms, beautiful furnishings, the most comfortable beds, and everything from electronic curtain control to highly refined lighting. The buffet breakfast was superb, the concierge staff was enormously helpful, and the cleaning staff left the rooms in impeccable condition every day. In short, one of the best hotel stays I have ever had.

After a stressful drive at night in the rain from Czechia to Budapest we arrived at the Matild Palace and immediately felt the stress of the day fade away. We arrived late and were greeted with a much needed glass of champagne and the beautiful interiors of the Matild Palace which is a truly spectacular historic building (and UNESCO World Heritage Site) with a modern restoration that keeps a sense of place appropriate for the building and it's heritage. We were upgraded to a suite which was just what we needed and I only wish we had stayed longer. In keeping with Hungary's spa culture and thermal bath tradition, the bathrooms are designed as giant spa wet rooms with colorful tiles in shades of teal. We did not have enough time to enjoy the hotel spa which is a big regret but a reason to come back. Breakfast was served in the classic Matild café which makes you think you've gone back in time. We also had a dinner at Spago which I was a little pessimistic about since it's such an "American" brand but the food was delicious. The rooftop bar is beautifully decorated in speakeasy, art deco style and you feel like you've arrived someplace special. The cocktails were exceptional as were the views of the Danube.

The hotel is in a beautiful spot in Budapest and very convenient to the centre of town as well as the Buda side of the river. Upon first entrance into the hotel, front desk service and concierge were very helpful. They let us check in early after the end of our cruise. However for the price paid in Marriott points and additional costs, I would have expected a bit more attention to housekeeping and maintenance in the room. Our room was at the end of a hall and consequently had an odd configuration for the bathroom set up. the toilet was in a separate room with a sink. The first usage of the sink revealed a leak and covered the toilet room in water. We had to use all of our towels to wipe up the water. The first day we were there we also noted to housekeeping that some things had been missed for cleaning like spider webs and food on the floor. We were told that they would be taken care of. It took two more requests before it was finally done.
The food was excellent and was the same quality for room service as in the restaurant. We also used the spa and it was very clean and relaxing.

I stayed at The Matild Palace for 3 nights and I can’t emphasize on the extremely high level of service, care and attention I received from the Hotel. I arrived to the room and found personal items that were meticulously placed that made me feel comfortable like at home. The rooms are the most modern rooms I have been to in Europe with amazing amenities & breathtaking shower.
The entire staff are very friendly & professional . However, The duty manager Réka made a huge impact on my stay, her friendliness and attention to detail kept impressing me, she also anticipated my needs which is something not anyone can do. Her genuine care & constant follow up was extraordinary & always greeted me with my name which is something very special . She made us feel that Matild Palace is our home .
Réka is an outstanding asset in the hotel , she helped in making my experience the best 5 star hotel experience I ever had in Europe.

My husband and I are both Titanium Elite Marriott members and travel extensively - post our three night stay at the Matild Palace we both agreed that this was one of the best hotels we've ever stayed in. The experience begins immediately upon entering as the staff whisk you to the front desk, offer you a welcome cocktail and take your bags out of your hands. We were upgraded to the most beautiful one bedroom suite which was appointed with incredible technology (electric blinds, several layers of lighting, TV built into the mirror, automated toilet, etc.) and the valet provided us with a detailed description of our room. The bedding was outfitted with Frette linens (the best)! The shower is the most incredible blue tiled room that reminded us of a mix of a Gustav Klimt painting and the Aegean Sea. Our room even had gorgeous fresh white roses. Honestly we could've spent three days in our room and been exceptionally happy! Our status level included breakfast at Spago which was superb and a highlight of our day (can order anything ala carte). The location is also very central and easy to walk to all of Budapest's highlights. The concierge was also incredibly informative and helped us to plan out our days. We could not speak more highly of this incredible property and the quality of the staff. We cannot wait to return to the Matild Palace!
