If you are a group of more than 4, please stop reading here and choose a different hostel; we are mostly for single or solo travelers - we recommend our sister hostels Grandio Party Hostel, Retox Party Hostel or Carpe Noctem Vitae! We don't accept groups of any kind (see conditions below). If you are a sociable or solo traveler and want to meet other people in a welcoming, friendly, and voted the most fun hostel in the world (2009) environment, please read on: Atmosphere: Do you want to...- Be a SINGLE TRAVELER or SOCIABLE BACKPACKER meeting other similarly like minded people in a friendly, lively and social atmosphere?- Go out EVERY NIGHT on PUB CRAWLS, karaoke nights, cheap drink nights, live music nights?- Be taken out by staff to cool UNDERGROUND PLACES unseen on the common traveler's route?- Be given a WARM WELCOME and a detailed introduction of the city with all the hot spots for PUBS, BARS, RESTAURANTS, CLUBS and SIGHT SEEING?- Be INTRODUCED TO OTHER GUESTS so you can instantly make friends for your travels...if not life?- Feel like you are STAYING AT A MATE'S HOUSE, chilling on bean bags and drinking free tea and coffee until beer o'clock?- Feel like you are staying in a SOCIAL place not just a bed in a room?- SAVE MONEY by taking staff recommendations for cheap places, and using the specially negotiated food and drink deals for you?- Be given all the HELP, ADVICE AND ASSISTANCE for your entire stay in Budapest and beyond if needs be?- Stay in a place that doesn't believe in hidden charges and wants to give you as much for FREE as possible?- Have LIVE-IN native English/Australian English speaking staff who have all moved to Budapest because they came and fell in love with it and are passionate to show you why? Carpe Noctem ('seize the night', for those who rightly gave up Latin just after it died) is the perfect hangout and base for single travelers and young, sociable people who want to be part of an interactive and lively hostel experience as well as maximising the city in the day time and seizing the night when the sight seeing has ended. Facilities: We are Aussies and Brits who having traveled widely and decided we wanted certain things...* Free tea and coffee, not just when you arrive, all the time (and none of this European yellow label stuff, we get PG Tips imported from UK)* Free padlock hire* Free use of lockers* Free use of electronic staff safe* Free towel hire* Free bed linen (who charges for that anyway???)* Free internet use and free wifi* Orthopaedic mattresses* Air conditioning* Electronic entry system... (no more charges for lost keys!)* Free use of skype headsets* Smoking area* Laundry service available* 24 hour check in* Very relaxed check out times (you can check out any time you like but you can never leave!)* Free use of guidebooks and book exchange available* Free use of kitchen for you to cook...or for us to cook for you!* No curfew (it's called Carpe Noctem..... so seize the night!). Location: Walking distance from: House of Terror, Oktogon, Szechenyi Thermal Baths, City Park, Andrassy Avenue, St Istvan's Basilica, Freedom Square, The Danube & Parliament - all within 10-15 minutes. For lazy travelers....public transport is in our immediate location: the blue metro (for direct metros from nepliget coach station), and yellow metro are only a few streets away; the trolley bus and tram are 1 street away and the night bus route is at the bottom of the road. We even have a direct train from the airport 2 streets away! We are just off the main road which has pubs, cafes, bars, restaurants, 24 hour shops and clubs on it so there is no need to stray far for whatever you need, yet we are located on a quiet cobbled side street so you don't have to listen to the noise from traffic. Building: We are located in a 19th-century heritage listed building. We have a very cosy and intimate set up which means it is impossible not to meet people and make instant friends. Our apartment on the top floor is newly renovated and we have added our personal touches; hand made bean bags which means you can chill wherever you want around the house, a large corner sofa to watch films on, tables to eat on or play drinking games, depending on your mood, murals of the sights of the city across most walls so you can decide what to see that day (if our 30 minute run through of everything hasn't been enough info for you!). We have a fully equipped kitchen for you to use, apart from the times when we are cooking up roast dinners, gypsy gulyas (goulash), breakfast of champions, or whatever else we think the hostel needs to prepare it for a good night out or to deal with a hangover! We are located on the top floor, and due to the status of the building we have no lift...so if you are lazy, you may be better off going to a ground floor hostel! Conditions: We are ideally suited to single travelers, or groups of two or three who wish to meet people so if you just want an isolated stay with just a bed in a room, groups who don't wish to mingle or couples who want alone time only, we are probably not for you. Regrettably and due to previous experience we can no longer accept groups of any kind (more than 4 people), nor can we take bookings for guests over the age of 40. Nor can we accept bookings for people taller than Craig. We reserve the right the refuse any bookings that fall outside this criteria. On a final note, we are from England and Australia and often miss certain things from home....if you want to bring us something from home to put a smile on our faces or potentially knock a euro or two off your stay, please email us!!!!! Carpe Noctem awards: 2010- Best hostel in Hungary, 2009- Best hostel in Hungary, 2009- Most fun hostel in the world, 2009- 5th Best hostel in the world, 2009- Best hostel in Eastern Europe.

If you are looking for a party hostel but still want to be in a place where is possible to have a good night of sleep that is definitely the place. The hostel is perfectly exactly as the description. The atmosphere there is really good, you will make new friends for sure. And the best part about this hostel is the staff. Junior, Diz, Doggo and Street will let you to the best ruin pubs and the craziest parties ever. They are the best staff ever and really good people. You will love them!

Stayed here for three nights and had a blast. Amazing staff and well organized group activities. Free breakfast, towels, padlocks and tea/coffee. A nice inviting/cozy hostel that felt safe. It was also in a very nice central location conveniently right next to the Budapest-Nyugati train station.

I arrived at Carpe Notem Original not knowing what to expect. After climbing some serious stairs (free cardio ;)) i was welcomed in by BMO and Syv, who both introduced me to everyone and really took the time to tell me about all the great things Budapest and the hostel have to offer. They also sorted me out with a much needed cup of coffee!

Every night you can participate in awesome events and you are welcome to join in on family dinner which is super tasty and affordable A.F. !

After dinner you can join in for Pregame and get to know your fellow OG fam, after pregame it's off to the night event for great fun.

If you're not feeling up to going out you can rest easy knowing that the hostel is completely still after 8:30 because of the noise curfews!

The beds are mad comfy and thin pillows are not a thing here (i slept so well), showers are great and the hostel is so clean!

Free eggs and bread to cure your hangovers in the morning and the staff will sort you out with tickets and information for whatever you want to get up to.

I managed to get lost a ridiculous amount of times during my stay in Budapest but i always managed to find my way back home to OG.

The only thing you will regret if you stay at OG is leaving.

Anaconda, Matt, Syv, BMO and Stevie (Rosé) thanks for an amazing time and for all being ridiculously GC's.

The reviews are a bit misleading for this hostel.

It is truly a great hostel for solo travellers, as the staff/guests get together almost every night to party.

There are family dinners, but there is no comfortable place to eat or hang out.

There's no bar in this hostel. Detox, the sister hostel, does have a bar. Although, Detox hostel does seem to be on the dirty side.

There are free eggs/bread and a kitchen to cook. Free towels are also available. The staff are willing to help you book excursions, provide advice on tourist destinations, and great restaurant tips. The restaurant tips were pretty damn good, I must say.

However - the staff are not the "coolest" people, so hanging out with them wasn't that attractive (sorry - you were all really nice though!). Further, it's a very small hostel (only about 30 beds max), so hanging out with fellow guests isn't that desired if your fellow guests aren't that cool (which ours weren't for the first two nights, but were on the second two). They promote it as being a "pro-sex"/pro-fun hostel, however, none of that happened while we were there, and all of the guests/staff would not be your ideal choice for a hook-up (except maybe 1 or 2 people in the entire place). If the hostel has good guests staying there, it would likely be a lot better.

It's also not the cleanest hostel. It is run by a bunch of young adults, who don't seem to have that much experience. We were there for 4 nights, and they cleaned the place once throughout that time. The bathrooms and showers are very outdated; and not very clean. Further, there are 2 sinks, 2 toilets, and 2 showers for the entire hostel.

The lockers consist of a small box, that can fit your valuables, but nothing else. Someone could easily rip the hinge off the box if they wanted to. The staff claimed nothing had ever been stolen. Although this wasn't true - 100 euros of cash that one of the staff members left sitting on the computer table was taken. But I like to think that it was her own fault for leaving it there... that's just a bit too trustworthy in my opinion.

Location is okay, but budapest isn't that big so it's not a huge deal. Wifi does not work in the rooms.

Overall, this hostel has a good atmosphere and the staff are pretty nice people. But it is not the cleanest hostel, does not have the best facilities (i.e. bar), and is not that well run.

I stayed here with a friend for a few nights in November. On arrival, we didn't receive a particularly friendly welcome... The 5 people in the lounge were silent as we walked in and we were made to feel like we were intruding? However we didn't let that phase us; we were in BUDAPEST!

Because we only had a short time in the city, we were out all day every day doing as much as we could. We were therefore pretty tired by the time we actually got to bed. If you go out with the hostel on their arranged nights and come back with everyone, you all most likely go to sleep at the same time, which is fine. Kudos to the hostel, the arranged nights were pretty fun and you get to see Budapest's vibrant nightlife.

HOWEVER - this is where this hostel really disappointed me - on the nights we did not go out and stayed put, we weren't asleep for an hour before people came in and woke us up. Now, I understand that this is standard for a shared dorm, but the final straw was our second to last night when 3 of the staff burst into our dorm, drunk.
It was the middle of the night and the whole of our 8 bed dorm was in the room, sleeping. The staff turned on all the lights and were shouting and howling about the place. They jumped on a man in the bunk below mine and started taking pictures of themselves. They were asked to quieten down but they took no notice. They left after about 15 minutes and left the door wide open and all of the lights on. No apologies and they continued to shout down the hallway.

Safe to stay I won't be staying here again as it was just exhausting. Our weekend in Budapest was magical, just a shame about our accommodation. If you are only in Budapest for a short break, stay somewhere else, where you will get some guaranteed sleep. However, if you're a solo, sociable, nocturnal, partying traveller, this place could be right up your strada.

Oh yes - there was also sick over the toilet seats 2 of the nights. Yum.

Although Carpe Noctem is a party hostel, and you will stumble through many drunken escapades, the hostel hosts a relaxed vibe--like chilling with old friends in a shared flat. There are a small amount of guests at this hostel (capacity is 22) and there are group events every night, so you get to know everyone. It is especially nice for solo travelers because the maximum group-booking size is three, you will not be on the outside of a group. I highly recommend coming here on your trip--especially if you feel a little bit homesick--and enjoying Budapest with a new group of old friends.
If you're looking for a party with a warm invite come here, if you're looking for a place to sleep and otherwise be alone you're missing out on the best this hostel has to offer!

Out of all the hostels my friend and I have stayed at, this one was one of the most welcoming. It truly felt like we were part of this little hostels family for a couple of days. The hostel is structured in such a way that the common room and kitchen feel exactly like an apartment. It made settling in that much easier.

The hostel culture and staff are just out of this world fun. I didn't know people existed who could rage that hard. My friend and I made lifetime memories celebrating 4th of July kareoke American style with all the gang that work at the hostel. Never have I been so proud to see my culture torn to bits.

Thank you crash, slug, trenchy, Scott and belch for making our stay a killer time.

Hope to visit again in the future!

When scrambling around looking for a hostel in Budapest (damn, there are so many!) we stumbled upon this hostel and, although slightly pricier, we trust the reviews so went for it.

We stayed for four nights/five days, and I can honestly say they were some of the best days of the year.

Arrival: We found the hostel without any major issues, public transport is decent and then just a short walk. We arrived at the door just as a group were coming back in (thankfully). Kind of sketched out at the large door and creepy staircase but at the very top was a different world. As we walked into the hostel, we were greeted by a number of friendly staff, shown to our beds and then we got a great guide of the city and a map with the must-see places (Thanks Sly)!

Within half an hour of arriving, we were chatting to the fellow hostel-goers and staff like we had known them for years. We had instantly been accepted into the family and that was a great feeling.

Comfort: The beds here are just the most comfortable beds you will sleep on in a hostel. Although not remembering the sleep first night because I was so drunk, every other night that followed was amazing. The room-mates were cool and considerate, they knew that nap-time was a serious thing that everyone needs and they understood the concept of consideration!

People: I can't get over how many awesome people we met in just 5 days, I feel so gifted to have met such a great group. And the best thing is, because of the small number of beds (22 beds), you get to know each and every individual on a much more personal level. This was truly great. Hell, we even got an applause on the way out, I felt like crying because I'd miss everyone so much!

Nightlife: Ever been to a boat party with some beautiful views of the city, a bottle of champagne EACH and great company for the equivalent of £12.50? Wow, what an amazing experience, definitely ticked that one off the bucket list. Ever been to a thermal bath party (SPArty)? Yep, you can tick that one off too! The ruin bars are quite fascinating, try going on the ruin bar crawl! Some really awesome bars right there.

PS: Go caving, it's awesome! Ask someone at the hostel to help you book it.

You guys reading this seriously do not want to miss out on this hostel, I guarantee it will not disappoint.

Thanks so much to the staff working there for making it such a great stay. Budapest is now my favorite European city!

The staff was really unkind and look bored all the time. Chilling in pyjamas all day. For example, we asked one of them to know where is the train station and she replied that internet exists for that. Not a party hostel at all, complete silence after 9pm otherwise they threaten to kick you out. This place is really overrated and I would definetly never go back there again.

Wow I came expecting a hostel but found a home! Placed within the heart of the city this party hostel is so so great. With only 22 beds this has an intimacy and family style which I have never seen within a hostel. The place is also spotless and quiet at night within the hostel but a CRAZY fun time at night with a different activity every night including pub crawls, party boat cruises and raves in the thermal baths. This place always knows where the party is. Great place for solo travelers to find travel buddies. If you are unsure where to stay in Budapest then look no further.
