Detailed Reviews
The hotel is located in the city center 100 meters from the three bridges. We were in a deluxe twin room. The room is extremely spacious and modernly equipped, the bar is included in the price of the room, which is updated daily, and for coffee and tea lovers there is also a kettle with tea and instant coffee, the beds are extremely comfortable. Although there is no noise outside in the city center. There is a hairdryer in the bathroom, some sort of trouser ironing machine (although I experienced it that way), an iron and ironing board for those horses who want to be in tune with this extremely elegant hotel. Breakfast is varied (there is also champagne :)), only the tables for two are very small, and the biggest drawback is that breakfast ends at 9 am? Anti covid measures are respected even though no one will really chase you if you don't have a face mask every moment. The wellness is solid, maybe having another sauna would be ok. The pool is large enough and the water is not cold, and there is the possibility of short and long massages. As the pool is used together with Uhotel, it is necessary to announce the use, but there was never a crowd in the pit. There is also a pool bar with non-alcoholic and alcoholic drinks. All in all a great hotel and value for money and offered for 5

I looked at some other reviews and apparently we had a different experience than some. This is not the Ritz in Paris, but it is an excellent hotel. It is an older property but very well maintained. Our room was on the 2nd floor facing the “courtyard”. It was very clean and quiet. While the room was probably updated a few years ago it was done to a very high level, is quite large by European standards with at least 12 foot ceilings and has been very well maintained. Quality tile and granite counters in the bath with German Grohe fixtures. The desk and armoire in the bedroom were very well made in a mahogany looking wood with an excellent finish. The bed was exceptionally comfortable with high quality bedding. Very nice robes and slippers were provided - we slept like babies. My daughter and her children were in a two bedroom suite and it looks as though it were more recently refurbished with marble in the bathrooms, beautiful parquet floors and a more modern look. The breakfast provided runs from 7am to 10 am and they have many signs posted stating the later you arrive the more crowded it becomes. We breakfast late but there was always plenty of food with an excellent selection of both hot and cold items properly prepared. On both days of our stay I observed staff refilling the serving area as late as 9:50am. The front desk staff, particularly Eva, were very professional, friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. Eva was able to get us a table for 6 at very good restaurants on short notice both evenings of our weekend stay. The location is outstanding right in the middle of everything. This is a city to be walked and enjoyed. From the Saturday market, local stores and the riverfront dining scene to the musical nightlife get out and enjoy Ljubljana!

The room was fine but the shower was poor - low water pressure and constantly went cold during use. Breakfast was very disappointing as it was served in a large canteen shared with the adjacent ‘uHotel’. We often struggled to find an available table, the room was very busy, messy and food constantly ran out. In a 4 star hotel it is usually expected to be shown to a table and for tea/coffee to be ordered and delivered by a waiter. We were disappointed that breakfast was not served in the grand hotel itself, but in the uHotel. The spa was also a big disappointment. Although we booked in advance to visit and were told there was a 16 person maximum, when we visited the spa there were more than 30 people there, most of which were children. It was very loud and impossible to swim. We were told by spa staff that in the past children were not allowed to use the pool between 8-10pm but that this rule had been removed. The spa was overrun by children both times we visited, in the evening and in the morning. We felt we did not get value for money and may as well have booked a cheaper room in the uHotel, as that’s where all facilities were located, we did not have the experience of staying in an old, ‘grand’ hotel.

The chief virtue of this hotel is its location on the edge of the pedestrian zone in the old city an easy walk from the river, the castle, and all of the chief attractions of Ljubljana. Getting past the location, this is a classic old European hotel, which means the rooms are small with little storage space for clothes, the bathrooms tiny, and the shower a little challenging. The bed was comfortable, but with the odd feature of some older European hotels of having separate covers for each person in the double bed. And the temperature controls didn't seem effective. However, the included breakfast was very good and served in a grand old room with very high ceilings and old world charm. All in all, I prefer this hotel over a more modern hotel that is not convenient to the old city. But your preference will be guided by your priorities.

Beware, the only four star thing about this hotel is its architecture and history. Their staff is not properly trained in hospitality.
We arrived to the hotel but had to leave our car with the U Hotel, sister property connected by a hallway, because access to Union isn’t available due to street closures. We transferred our luggage to the Union hotel, and were checked in. This is where the smooth experience ended.
Our room smelled like smoke thanks to our next door neighbors who clearly smoked in their room. Our room also lacked hand towels, had a half used shower gel bottle, and was missing items from the tea tray. No big deal, we thought, because a quick call to the front desk could’ve resolved all of this issues. We thought, and we were wrong.
The room phone has no labels, and pressing 0 connects you to no one. We had to use our cellphones and make an international call to the front desk. They picked up and hung up 3x. We gave up.
When we returned to our room from dinner, smelling like cigarettes, it was really warm and humid. Opening windows did no good as there was no breeze and the evening was really warm. We called again, using our cellphone, and this time they picked up!
Unfortunately the front desk staff is incompetent. They have no “operating fans”, and the thermostat in the room cannot go lower than 20C. Our room was at least 25C, smelly, stuffy, and gross. Nothing they could do about it. Fine. Sleepless night ahead…
… and then the hunger games with internationals. No one tended to the guests, and many of the trays in the buffet were empty. It was just a really depressing and embarrassing sight to see.
Slovenia is known for its hospitality, cleanliness, and fresh, good food. This hotels falls far below expectations.

Response from Domen Pavlic, Guest Services / Front Office at Grand Hotel Union
Responded Jun 2, 2022
Dear 580eminad, We are so sorry that your experience was not what you had hoped for. We strive to make everyone's stay special, and many of positive reviews over more than a couple of years here on TripAdvisor attest to our success. It is our mission to make each and every guest feel welcome and comfortable and we are deeply sorry we failed in your case. This is by no means a high level of service we at Union hotels are so well known for. We will discuss your review at our next management meeting and we can assure you that changes will be implemented in the near future. We only hope that you will give us another chance to restore your confidence in us and allow us to provide you with a true welcome to Slovenia’s capital and an exceptional Union experience. Kind Regards, Blaž Zver Front Office Manager

The hotel is very nice and the service is wonderful. The location is perfect to explore the city. We borrowed the bikes from the hotel and did some great sightseeing. The room has very nice interior and although you are in the Centre it’s not loud. The bed is so comfortable and we slept very well. Thanks to everyone who made this trip so nice!

My family and I had a corner suite for our week-long stay in Ljubljana. The Grand Hotel Union was the absolute perfect location, as it's just a 2 minute walk from the main square and is very close to the touristy sites in Ljubljana. The service is amazing as well, and the front desk workers were extremely friendly and helpful. They spoke great English as well. Breakfast had tons of options and was always well stocked. I wholeheartedly recommend staying here (or at U Hotel right next door) when you visit this beautiful city.

We booked this hotel due to its location and Art Nouveau architecture. It's definitely the most central hotel and although sadly devoid of some original features it ticked the right boxes. It seems that the hotel was renovated at a time when original mouldings, fixtures and fittings etc. were undervalued. Hence it's a bit of a mish-mash of Beua Arts and 80's decor. On arrival, we were met by a very friendly reception staff who directed us to an upgraded room which, I am delighted to say, was a great improvement on the room shown on the hotels' website. The bed was massive and incredibly comfortable and the room also offered a sofa and enormous TV. Limited channels though. Although we had a shower and no bath, the room was imaculately clean and kept that way thanks to a fantastic housekeeping team. Breakfast was ok with a wide choice and hosted by a cheerful young team. The dining area was vast, but lacking in atmosphere due to the monumentally high ceilings and a slightly cool ambience. This same room doubles as the bar of an eveing and could be improved by lowering the lights and possibly the addition of some candles. It never seemed busy and that's very likely why. It felt like having a drink in a brightly-lit gymnasium. Overall, we were happy at the Grand Hotel Union and pleased that we booked the hotel. It would be lovely if the hotels' owners put back some of the original features as it has a great deal to offer at a reasonable price.

Central location in the pedestrian walkway. Clean and bright with attention to every detail for my comfort. I was greeted on arrival by Tommy who upgraded us to a suite over looking the pedestrian walkway He arranged for a return ride to the airport and offered a box breakfast since our fight was before the start of the buffet breakfast The breakfast buffet was fresh and many Slovenian traditional foods
The staff was friendly and accommodating .
I would stay at this hotel again and recommend it to anyone traveling to Lubjiana

Not sure what that might mean. Best to check direct with the hotel. I saw no signs of shared bathrooms or shared accommodation.
From 7 but you can tell the lobby you are leaving early and they will make a special pack for you. I did that.
Yes, there is.
No official shuttle service, but if you ask they get a taxi arranged from within their networks, and the fare is same or even cheaper than normal taxi rates. We took the transfer on way back for airport drop, I think they charged about 35 Euro (paid directly to the taxi driver).
