Once the summer homes of the Yugoslav King and President Tito, Vila Bled is good place to stay while in Bled. Situated along the lake, there are magnificent views and the pathway along the lake is just behind the hotel. Rooms are large enough, but simply decorated in a style that is reminiscent of the Communist era. Our room had wooden floors. There wasn’t any air conditioning, but our lake view room cooled off nicely at night with the balcony door open and overhead fan. The elevator is small and probably dates back to the Tito era. The property was very quiet at night. There is a tiny gym with two cardio devices. The included breakfast was very good. Service was good.

To be able to understand the history of this Villa it needs to be anachronistic and so meeting traveller expectations as per previous reviews and having a modern refurbishment in keeping with and not spoiling the ambience will be a real challenge. There are lovely modernised hotels in Bled run by the Sava Group, (Toplice, Park and Rikli Balance) which are more modern but just don’t have the location, grandeur, or history. We walked around the lake (5.7 km) and came across Vila Bled in January when it was closed and decided we had to come back here for those reasons. We came back, staying two nights on our way down to Croatia having come via Hallstatt. We don’t regret it. Lake Bled blows Hallstatt out the water and Vila Bled, well, there just isn’t anywhere else like it. The Belvedere cafe is a must visit too. The 1950’s TV and phonogram underneath Tito’s picture just set the mood... The lido is great and the 1 hour a day free rowing boat ample to get out to Bled island. The life guard is a lovely lad and very helpful. Swimming in the lake at 21 degrees was something we did not contemplate in January and was fun. Crystal clear water. The walk round the lake is very enjoyable, made all the more enjoyable by stopping for an ice cream and watching the world pass by. A visit to Vintgar gorge is recommended, Bled Island is must do but moor free at the far side not at the steps, and Bled Castle is worth the climb for amazing views and photo opportunities from the other end that contrast and support those from the Belvedere. The gardens and location of the villa are just superb and the dining experience, dinner and breakfast is an ‘experience’ well summarised in other reviews which I won’t reiterate. Suffice to say we walked out to the local pension Mlino on the waterside on our second night and had a great meal for half the price... We are retired and dress down most of the time - we were not alone but there was a mix of ‘snooty’, business higher echelons, retired european, and loud transatlantic tourists amongst the clientele which was not entirely unexpected - an eclectic mix! The staff do tend to be a bit judgemental too based on your dress if you get what I mean, and so I agree with other reviewers on this point. At end of season no air con was not an issue and overall we have no regrets about the experience. Memories are made of this.... So a bucket list must do experience - at 225 euro a night b&b, good free open network wifi the price is ok and to be expected. We will be back to Lake Bled as it makes out hearts sing but probably to another hotel....sorry, but thank you, Vila Bled....

We were pleased with the Vila Bled as the grounds were lovely and the location away from central Bled was peaceful. Even in May Bled was very busy but the location of the hotel, near the church, but away from the busy town was ideal. We used the row boats they supply guests to circle around the island and walked miles along the path that runs in front of the hotel. The staff were helpful and we enjoyed the one dinner we had during our stay. The room was nice and we had a great view from the balcony. The only real disappointing part of the stay was the breakfast, had far better at places costing a third of the price of a stay at this hotel. That said if you have a car and want a unique stay in a great location the Vila Bled should be strongly considered.

I loved the feeling of staying in a well-preserved time capsule. Our suite had a huge central room, a large bedroom, and a huge bathroom -- complete with double sinks and a large glass cube/shower in the center. Others complain about outdated finishes and decor, but our suite appeared fresh and updated. Be sure to check out the murals depicting Yugoslavia's Communist revolution found in a meeting room on Floor 1. Warning: there is no air conditioning in the hotel. Didn't matter to us because it was very cool at night and we were comfortable with the windows open (no bugs around). There's a private dock with lounge chairs at the lake for hotel guests only. If you stay here, you must walk up the short trail to Belvedere, the lookout spot/coffee shop/bar used by Tito to entertain guests -- this is where you'll get the best view of the lake and island!

Upon driving to the entrance gate, we thought that we were lost due to the grand scale of the grounds and the hotel. We learned that this was built for Marshall Tito in the fifties. It has a prime location on Lake Bled overlooking the church in the lake. We were also surprised that our room was a three-room suite with two baths. While Lake Bled is one of the one of the great sights of Europe, the hotel is not far behind. Dining can be on the terrace overlooking the lake. Although modernized somewhat, it retains the character of the 1950's. Highly recommended!
