We picked this hotel based on the positive critics mentioning that the place is a budget hotel with clean rooms and helpful staff, close to the city center.
At our arrival, we were informed that our room was located in another building (building number 14) and not on the main building were the reception was located. This little detail was not mentioned on the website we used to book the room either.
Building number 14 was located on the same block like the main hotel building. When we arrived at the building were our room was located, we were quite shocked to find out that there was no elevator and that we had to carry 23kilo-luggages up to the 5th floor where our room was (!).
When we finally managed to climb up to the 5th floor with our luggage, we were at least satisfied to see a room that looked like the website pictures – equipped with basic furniture (no mirror included except from the tiny one in the bathroom- no mini-fridge) and clean. There was only one towel for each person (big body towel) and a few toiletries were left in the bathroom for us to use.
Also there was a notice informing us that the towels and sheets would be changed by the cleaning staff every third day due to environmental issues.
The first time the cleaning staff visited our room, we only had our towels changed and not our sheets although we had removed them from our beds. The staff used the same sheets again. The sheets were changed only when we mentioned to the reception the incident. After the 4rth day the cleaning staff never came back to our room to check whether the towels/sheets needed to be changed, the room needed to be cleaned and the toilet trash bin to get emptied or if there was need of toiletries or even TOILET PAPER.
As a result, the room was soon dusty and the floor dirty. We had to get rid of the toilet trash on our own as well. On the 6th day we expected the cleaning staff to clean our room, change towels/sheets etc but the staff never came. Day 7th and 8th we were out of toilet paper. That was too much so we expressed our vivid complaints to the receptionist whose reaction was “Oh, you should have come to get some toilet paper”. No mention to the cleaning staff that didn’t clean do its job at all according to the hotel rules. The last day of our staying there, the room was cleaned and there were loads of toilet paper.
Another annoying fact about our staying there was the fact that after 22.00 o’clock there was no hot water for showering. The hotel staff couldn’t do anything about that when we mentioned it.
Conclusion: I am on vacation, I want to have fun and happy memories. I don’t ask too much. Just a basic clean room and toilet paper. I don’t like to complain nor to behave in a nasty way but this was by far the worst accommodation I’ve picked ever and I have travelled quite a lot. It was a disappointing experience and destroyed a part of my vacation.
only a few tram stops from the rail-station;
we didn't have rooms in the main building,
but multi-bed rooms (4-6) in the annex around the corner,
so I can only talk about that;
the price was good, and for that we expected youth-hostel level,
what it was, so we wouldn't complain;
but what made it absolutely inacceptable was that at least one room
had bugs or kind of vermin in it;
I saw some of them on the floor and on a board,
and finally I got stung by one at night;
I'm sure of that, because I saw it crawling away,
and when I catched it, it made a big red spot
because it was full of my blood;
that caused a swelling in my foot and a pain up to the knee
and it took more than 6 weeks for my foot to get ok again;
so in all: never again in this hotel, even if they let me stay for free;
Unfortunately that is where it stops.
From smelly rooms to broken showers and discarded take away food containers littering the halls all I can say is don't go.
Also the hotel is next to a brothel. Although this wouldn't normally bother us.
Have stayed in many cheap and cheerful hotels in the past and just got on with it but this was so bad we moved after one night.
Avoid at all costs
Location: Nearby there is a restaurant across the street from Pension City's reception building, one just down the road, and if you head for the main road there are plenty of bars, restaurants and newsagents within 200yrds. I'd recommend eating at one of the establishments out here before you go into town as the food is very cheap, you get good size portions, cheap beer, and the majority of the food is delicious Czech cuisine (for example, for our first meal we got a few beers, a main dish and a desert for around £10).
It's a fair trek away from the centre, probably around fifteen minutes walking from Hlavni Nadrazi (train station) or twenty/thirty from the City Centre, but there is a tram which runs to Husinecka and Lupsinecka (two stations which are around 300m away from the hotel) all day. It costs 24kc for 30mins and takes probably five minutes from the centre or the station. Quick tips, there isn't many shelters next to where the trams stop, so you may find yourself under a bus shelter on the opposite side of the road and then dashing to the tram through traffic when it comes. And Prague like many other countries works on a trust issue with their trams. When you buy a ticket and get on, you are expected to validate (the yellow boxes) the ticket yourself. If you get caught without a ticket/without a validated one you can be fined. We used the tram eight or nine times and never saw anybody checking tickets, but when we asked a local in the bar, he said we'd probably be the first kind of people they'd ask for tickets because we look like tourists.
Room: We played very little, and got very little as expected. Three rooms; one bathroom, one containing a sofa-bed and a wardrobe, and one containing four single beds, a one-channel television, two tables, a chair and a little cabinet for placing some bits and bobs on. There were clear signs of 'wear and tear' as a light above the bed didn't work, and there was various things protruding through the walls that had simply been sellotaped up. The room isn't cleaned by maids/towels aren't replaced by anybody, so on our second day, we had to rummage around the room and finally find a couple of extra towels under the sofa-bed (none of us fancied the 83 steps down and then back up again). It was very simple, very basic and what we expected for the price we paid.
Sleep Quality: Very good, the location is 'off the beaten track' so to speak, and while there seems to be a strip club (it's called Amsterdam, has a picture of a half-naked woman in the window, and we never went in) across the road, a restaurant across the road and a small casino/bar up the road, we had no problems with any noise whatsoever, whether it was early morning or late at night.
Security: We were in the building around the corner from the reception for Pension City, and had three keys. One for the main big brown door, another for the metal gate just inside the building, and our hotel key, all are very sturdy doors. The hotel is very secure as it would take a very determined criminal (and many hours!) to get through all three doors.
No Lift: Many people have mentioned this and I'd like to reiterate it myself. Some rooms for Pension City are in a building that is just around the corner from the reception building and they are not set out in numbers, but in letters. So, for example, A, B and C would be the ground floor, D, E, F the second, etc, etc. We were on the fourth floor, and while that doesn't usually sound that bad, it was a combined total of 83 steps on a very winding staircase. If you have any trouble with travelling up/down steps, or have some luggage, I'd recommend asking for a floor closer to the ground level.
Addmittedly this area of Prague- Prague 3/ Zizkov is not the most beautiful, so it's not for honeymoons, but it is a 'real' and pretty normal area of the city inhabited by local people and quite a lot of 1-3 star hotels. There are a good few restaurants and bars around too with very well priced food.
Mon ami on Rohacova (just down the hill from the hotel) is recommended for its wide selection, cheap food and drink and cosy feel.
Upsides
The hotel is right next to a police station, and opposite a corner shop, so you feel safe and have a good supply of fruit and water nearby.
The hotel room was massive, with an entrance room with bathroom off it and wardrobe, and large double bedroom with third single bed. In all we counted that there were enough good mattresses for 7 people due to a bed settee and 2 pull out beds.
The double windows were very handy for keeping fruit and water cold...open one set and place the food behind the single glazed window and then close it again. It kept out the draft well but kept our snacks cool overnight.
Good heater in the bedroom, some nights were too hot and we had to turn it down, even though it was -6 outside.
Reception staff seem to speak quite good english, which was helpful when asking about transport etc.
Downsides (or possible downsides)
There is no lift in the part of the hotel I was in, so if you have very heavy bags or bad legs this may not be a fun place to stay.
Walking to town takes around 25 minutes and involves crossing quite a few roads, so public transport is a better option.
No tea making facilities were provided in the room
My partner and I really enjoyed staying in this hotel, but would have liked to know beforehand...
That tram tickets can be bought from the local tabak shops for 18czk (20 mins on tram/5 stops on metro) or 26czk (75mins on either). The shop keepers knew enough english to know what we were asking for.
The local stops are husinecka and Lipanska (bit further away from the centre).
Trams 9, 5 and 58 will all take you to town and come every 4-5 minutes. Make sure you validate your ticket or you can get fined, though no one ever seems to check.
I stayed at two different rooms, one on the ground level (didn't find it noisy, maybe I just got lucky) and another on the 2nd floor. There is no elevator which is terrible if you have a lot of luggage. Both rooms were really clean but there is indeed no daily cleaning, after all this is a cheap pension and not a hotel.
Also well located: two small blocks from a tram station and a bus stop. Also around 2 tram stops from Mustek/Wenceslas Sq.
Breakfast can be taken at a really nearby restaurant (great restaurant btw). The negative side is that breakfast ends too early.
Cable tv worked fine.
I also found it strange that I had to pay everything in advance and leave a 10 eur deposit for the key. At least they do accept most credit cards.
All in all, if prices stay the same, I would go again.
