We arrived at the hotel late in the evening, welcomed by the pleasant reception man. Very decent sized rooms. The hotel hot water was more luke warm and had to sleep with window open as the room was quite warm but extremely quiet and a good night sleep. Stayed 3 nights. Lots of restaurants within 1 to 2 mins walk. Tram stop 5 min walk and verycheap travel and you could walk back from the centre. Took us 25 mins from the Old Town (up hill though) We were happy with this hotel and would stay again as it was such good value.

Staff were very friendly! Spoke excellent English too. The room was very clean and had everything we needed. Rooms look outdated on pictures but in real life they weren’t too bad. On the other hand, the entrance to the hotel itself is quite confusing, it’s not shown very well at all. Furthermore there was a shower head but nothing to stand it on, so we had to wash ourselves with the shower head in hand, very weird? Overall a good stay though!

We stayed at Hotel Claris in Prague for 4 nights in February '06. The location was quite good (only a 5min walk from the subway station - I timed it!).

LOCATION:
Not much to see/do around the hotel, and the restaurants around the hotel are mostly international (Chinese, Italian, other Euro foods). Just jump on the metro, and you can get to Wenceslas Square (1 stop), or Prague castle (3 stops) within minutes.

HOTEL:
The hotel itself was very clean and modern. The rooms were very comfortable. For the price, there is no better value. I have stayed at probably 50+ locations in Europe, and this hotel would definitely rank in the top ten.

GOOD EXPERIENES:
Very good quality breakfast every morning, which is served as a buffet. The rooms were clean, comfortable and very quiet at night. Wireless internet is available throughout the hotel, and if you don't have a laptop/PDA with you, there's a free internet room open 24hrs. The walk to the subway is only about 5min., and you are at all major sites within 20mins of leaving the hotel.

BAD EXPERIENCES:
We did have two 'bad' experiences at the hotel. First, we stayed in Room 1, which is nice and quiet at the end of the hallway. When we entered the room the first time, we could smell an extremely strong ammonia smell (I hope, because it also smelled like pee). When we complained to the front desk, they stated it was normal and was the scent of their disinfectant which was present in all rooms. Either way, we didn't change rooms, and we just kept the windows open while we were out. The smell was there every day, but keeping the windows open was a drag (it was -5 outside).

Second, when we tried to book a tour from the front desk, one of the girls (dark hair to her shoulders) was really difficult to work with. She demanded cash, even though it clearly stated we could pay by credit card (it was 3000 crowns) on all brochures. She refused to take the credit card, and made us walk to the nearest ABM which was out of service. When we came back without the cash, she was very difficult and basically treated us like we were lying. Thankfully I had taken a picture of the out-of-service ABM as a joke, and I was able to show her. She then sent us about 5km to the other ABM to get cash. Long story made short, when the tour guide arrived, he told us we could have paid by credit card and that she wanted cash so she could get her commission faster! Not too happy. Lesson - book tours from the tourist office, not the hotel.

PRO'S: Price, Free Breakfast, Free Internet Room (24hrs), Free WiFi Internet Throughout Hotel, Proximity To Subway, Comfortable Rooms

CON'S: The stink from the disinfectant solution they use (heavy ammonia smell, like pee!), Booking a tour is difficult with certain staff members (not recommended).

TIPS:

#1: We ate only at Czech restaurants. The best one (amazing) is 'U Rudolfina' near the Rudolfinum Theatre and a short walk from the Charles Bridge. Unreal Czech cuisine, at really cheap prices. Beers are only 0,80EUR or $1USD.

#2: Opera and Symphony are best at the National Theatre and the Rudolfinum respectively. You pay less at these major theatres than at the tourist traps downtown. Visit the theatre on the day of the show to buy tickets direct. We paid only 3,00EUR/$4USD for the Opera, and 2,00EUR/$3USD for the symphony. Both were great experiences.

#3: Buy the unlimited subway pass when you arrive at the airport (or buy it at any station). For 280 crowns (6,00EUR / $8USD), you get unlimited bus/tram/subway for 7-days (also available in 1,3,5,15 day tickets). We bought our 7-day pass at the airport and took the public bus from the airport to the subway, then connected with the subway to the hotel. Total trip time 45min (a little more than a cab), but it was included in the unlimited ticket!

Hope this helps! Enjoy Prague (we also visited Karlsbad and Terezin while there - both are recommended, and you can do both from the bus station for cheap).

Most of reception staff friendly with the exception of one woman who was very rude.
A few problems with our room but these were fixed fairly promptly - one of the lights didn't work in the bedroom and seemed to be an electrical issue, then the bath plug got stuck while showering giving us a foot bath. Shower was a handheld situation but good temperature and pressure.
No safe in room.
Booked a double room and got 2 single mattresses in a double frame with 2 single duvets. Asked for extra pillows as they weren't very firm but only one was able to be found.
Breakfast very average - grey coffee and not a lot of variety.
Decor very outdated.
Feels more 2 star.

I wrote this review with tears in my eyes with how disrespectful and toxic the staff is. The service is toxic and they are extremely rude people. I thought it would be unfair not to advice people to stay wherever but here if they are willing to value each penny they spent to visit this country. I still have 2 days to go and I don’t know how I am going to be able to make it, it will be torture everytime I have to come back to this ‘hotel’, if you can call it hotel, that is.

We stayed here for 3 nights and was allocated this hotel from a package city break we purchased. NEVER. AGAIN. We actually could not believe our luck when we entered the hotel. It felt like we went back in time 50 years. The rooms were small, dark, quite creepy, dated furniture and bedding etc. most staff were friendly, others not so.

We didn’t have hot water or heating for most of our stay and we chose to stay out of our room for as long as possible so that we didn’t have to stay there… definitely would not recommend…

This place was wonderful. It had the charm of an old inn or quiet bed and breakfast but was just outside the city center and a short walk to everything. The beds were comfortable and the rooms were very clean and welcoming. The front desk was very helpful and extremely friendly. Parking is a little tricky driving through the corridor but they were very quick to open the gate for me. Larger cars not recommended for parking on site. I would definitely stay here next time.

Checked in on 10th June, reception were very friendly and kind.
The room was clean and well presented, everything in full working order, comfortable bed and a quiet night's sleep.
Would highly recommend for a stop off in Prague.

Just got back from wonderful 4 nights in Prague. The Claris is a very good choice. Transfer from the airport is easy- Grab your transport pass from transport information in the airport (about £6 for 7 days unlimited travel on bus, tram and tube) Directly outside is the 119 bus stop. Validate your ticket by placing it into the machine on the bus (you'll see it) Get this to last stop (everyone else will get off here too) and its straight down the tube. One line only from this station so hop on the tube to Nimesti miru. Take the right exit out of the station, turn first right and its about 2 mins walk.
The hotel is clean, modern and friendly and 2 streets over (manesova- may be spelt wrong) there are some excellent restaurants. Please try ambiente (the living restaurant) Fantastic meal and service excellent. Very resonably priced too.
The hotel is about 15mins walk from the tourist area or a couple of tube stops if you prefer not to walk.
When we return we wont stay anywhere else
Have fun!

Stayed at the Claris in late November and couldn't ask for anything better. Even before the trip the staff were great by speedy replies to my questions via email and also helping to arrange a taxi to pick us up at the airport. The rooms were very clean and cute... the bathroom were large and also very very clean, however, I agree with other reviews that the shower with no curtains did make taking a shower interesting :) And I can't say enough about the staff and how clean everything was... I've travel around Europe and other then 5 star hotels this has to be one of the cleanest places... (this speaks volumes about the Hotel). Location wise it wasn't too bad to get around. The metro was about 3 blocks away and the tram was just a short walk down the street. To get to the city center using the metro was very easy...note beware... buy the metro ticket at the airport when you arrive... we got nabbed on our way to buy the metro ticket our first day... 1000 K... Metro was very easy to use like any around the states.. like the T in Boston just follow the color lines to where you need to go and transfer at the stations. The hotel was not to far and only spent about 10 mins on the metro to get to the square. Markets were close by the hotel (Alberts is Prague’s supermarket, I think there is one in the metro station in the Muzck stop) Nice cute places to eat around the Hotel. Overall it was a very nice trip and the Hotel Claris was a great pit stop each night. We would for sure stay here again on our next trip to Prague.

how far away is the airport?

By taxi takes about 40 min, but may strongly depend on the trafic jams. By public transportation, one should take metro and then the bus, alltogether will be about one hour or a bit more. The precise distance I do not know.
