About
Located in the picturesque spa town of Karlovy Vary in the Czech Republic, the Grandhotel Pupp is one of Europe's most famous historical hotels. Talking about its history would take a while, because it dates back to 1701. In recent years the Grandhotel Pupp has hosted illustrious names from the movie world including Morgan Freeman, Gregory Peck, Sharon Stone, Robert Redford, John Malkovich, Antonio Banderas, Jude Law, John Travolta and Nikita Michalkov. Such stars have descended on the hotel especially for the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival each year at the beginning of July. As well as modern-day celebrities, the hotel has also attracted eminent historical figures from culture and the arts including German poet and philosopher Johann Wolfgang Goethe, composers Johann Sebastian Bach, Richard Wagner and Antonin Dvorak, violinist Nicolo Paganini, writer Franz Kafka and master of Art Nouveau Alfons Mucha.
In two connected buildings, River Side and Park Side, the Grandhotel Pupp complex offers 228 rooms in the categories of Comfort, Superior, Superior Plus, Junior Suite, Premier Suite and Apartment. The ground floor of the hotel features restaurants, a cafe, bars, a boutique zone, a hairdressing salon and casino. Becher's Bar provides entertainment in the evening. The Grandhotel Pupp invites guests to the new Pupp Royal Spa wellness centre with pool and saunas. The complex includes a modern fitness centre as well as a private Royal Spa Suite with whirlpool, massage tables, sauna and a relaxation zone. The Pupp Royal Spa offers an extended range of treatments, from traditional procedures based on the natural bounty of Karlovy Vary and the region to modern massages and beauty treatments.

There are some opportunities for improvement as we have noticed a slight deterioration in service this visit. The breakfasts no longer have a Cook creating eggs, omelets or crepes, all that is available is a buffet.
We stayed for Christmas and New Years, which they now have reduced to one sit down service and 2 buffets as part of the New Years package. The food was excellent quality just a slight deterioration in the service.
We found drinks in Beecher's bar very expensive by Czech standards, in fact they matched Downtown Toronto prices. It was a shock to see the bill, especially when you order a gin and tonic you see a charge for gin and a separate charge for tonic. The charge for the tonic water was over $5 CDN, WOW.
Overall food was great, the hotel is fantastic, SPA leaves a lot to be desired but I do not believe it is run by the Hotel.
Speaking of the SPA, generally they had no towels, and when questioned they just blamed laundry.
These are just areas for improvement, if asked would I go again the answer is most definitely yes, hopefully they do not continue the downward slide.I understand they have new management, so lets hope it is just growing pains taking over what is one of the best facilities we have ever had the opportunity to visit.

What is most disturbing is that I booked myself a Riverside - Superior Suite front view after reading all the reviews of other travellers. I was unfortunately sadly disappointed. What I got was I guess technically accurate, I did have a view of the river but definitely not the glorious view of the river at the front of the hotel that I was expecting. I feel I was sold a bill of rotten goods. When I queried this, the first person told me that I did not make mention of the river in my booking in spite of it being documented in the communication. The Night Manager called and told me there was nothing they could do as the class of rooms was sold out for the night. Given a disappointed who made the effort to let you know that all she saw was the car park and was very disappointed I would have upgraded them to a better room but of course that was not offered. But that's just me.
So travellers beware. Technically I got a river but it looked like a ditch with construction site nearby, a casino and a car park. Not the glorious views that was promised.

We stayed in the Superior Suite in the Riverside section, a spectacular corner suite with 270 degree views of the river, the town and the hotel itself. The suite was very large and luxurious, although a bit sparsely furnished. I cannot fault the comfort, the good soundproofing, the facilities, and the nice touches such as the Nespresso machine. That said, it would have been nice to have bottled water replenished every day and not just on day 1.
The spa was immensely enjoyable. It was a bit busy, especially on the weekend, but never uncomfortably so. There are plenty of areas to explore: main pool, side pools, Jacuzzis, saunas, etc, so you can always find a quiet spot. The massages we got were lovely (Swedish massage) although spa treatments were the only element of the holiday we felt were overpriced.
Food-wise the hotel excels again and we loved everything we ate and drank. The only disappointment was when we were served prawn cream instead of lobster cream without even an acknowledgement - prawn and lobster are very different things and when you order one, you don't expect to be served the other. Apart from that, all meals were outstanding and we ate in the hotel almost every day. You could spend hours just admiring the walls and ceiling of the grand restaurant.
The location of the hotel was pretty much perfect as well. It's a 30 minute walk from the train/bus station and everything in the town is within walking distance. There are many hiking opportunities in the area too, which we really enjoyed, especially the walk up to the Diana tower and restaurant just behind the hotel. The bit of snow we got made everything look even more magical.
Overall the hotel exceeded expectations. If you've seen The Last Holiday you will definitely recognise the outside areas and the restaurant, although the rooms and the spa look quite different. Small issues aside, we loved every minute of our stay and will definitely be back!
The whole complex is housed in a beautiful XIX century palace hotel style building, except for a horrible modern Casino addition.
It has been intelligent for this country to have preserved it. The location is perfect for exploring Karlovy Vary by foot and close to many restaurants.
We had the Imperial Suite, consisting of 2 oversized rooms plus a huge compartmented marble bathroom.
AC and internet worked well. For such a top end suite the furnishings should have been antiques and not contemporary classic furniture.
Breakfast is served in the Grand restaurant which resembles the days of XIX century palace hotels. In the same room dinner is served with a first class menu and quality of food. I would recommend to dine in the hotel.
The huge Spa es fantastic with everything such an installation such have.
Staff at reception and restaurant are well trained and very kind.
The building itself and the common areas are nothing short of spectacular, with classic elegance and vaulted ceilings full of details, sculptures and paintings. The dining areas are also beautiful and serve excellent food: we tried the Cafe Pupp for lunch, we had breakfast in the Mala Dvorana room and one unforgettable dinner at the Grand restaurant. We did not try the Becher bar nor did we go to the Casino.
The spa is great (we tried 3 types of massages) and the pool is large and with different areas of temperature, as well as the sauna with 3 different areas of temperature and humidity.
The rooms were equally amazing, very large compared to the average room in Europe, with fantastic views of the town and the river, large, well appointed bathrooms with great toiletries. The bed was large and comfortable.
This hotel completely fulfills any expectation of luxury and elegant comfort, it was really as beautiful as depicted in all of those movies, and then some.
Lastly, prices were very affordable: both room prices and spa treatments as well as the restaurants were significantly lower than in Prague, for example.
I will plan to return again, one of the best experiences ever.
Please note that if you book a room w/ forest view, you are booking a room in a building next door, with its own reception and its own restaurant.
It is NOT the Grandhotel Pupp and you do not have access to breakfast at the Ghotel Pupp.
Front desk at the real Pupp: unknowingly we tried to check-in at the real Pupp, we were promptly informed that our room was of a lower category and a lower/ cheaper price and those rooms are in the building next door, the attitude of one of the receptionists was very rude and arrogant and totally unacceptable.
ROOM:
The room was big but worn out and have seen better days, the bed was terrible, the sagging in the middle was so pronounced that it was impossible to sleep, big renovated bathroom, no A/C, our room facing the so called “forest” is mostly facing a wall and the the operating area of the hotel.
BREAKFAST:
Whilst offers some choice it was feeling and tasting like a budget breakfast, poor quality and food wasn´t replenished, sooo in reality NOT the standard of a 5* hotel!!
BTW, the restaurant is barely separated from the reception ..... I wonder what the management of Parkside Grandhotel Pupp considers 5*:
A- Checking in with the noise from the restaurant (cutlery, plates, conversations)
or
B- Having breakfast with the noise from the phone at reception, people checking out, carrying luggage, etc.
PARKING FEE : 20€ day.
To offer, ambience, rooms and breakfast of a 3* hotel level and charging as a 5* hotel, is a shame and ridiculous
If you are looking to pay premium for a terrible experience .... Parkside Grandhotel Pupp is the right place!
NOT coming back for sure!! Karlovy Vary has many options, I suggest looking elsewhere.
The hotel stands out like a gleaming white beacon at the end of Karlovy Vary’s main thoroughfare, just a five minute walk from the colonnades. Check in was quick and easy, friendly service and every part of the beautiful public areas were worthy of photos— from the lobby, to the grand staircase, to the spectacular breakfast room.
I booked a premier Riverside room, and I’m glad I did. My room was massive, and high on the top floor where I was graced with elegant Juliet balconies providing stunning views of the town. The room itself was opulent and inviting, comfy sheets and bed, and even a pillow menu! No complaints in the bathroom, everything fresh and clean in there. Lovely deep bathtub that I was too busy to use.
Breakfast was delicious and varied. Plenty to choose from including meats, fish, pastries, cereals, fruits, yogurt, muesli, breads, and so much more.
I also had dinner at the Grandrestaurant which was wonderful with amazing service. A beautiful evening in a beautiful setting!
Casino is worth checking out if only for how elegant it is. I didn’t win anything but it was fun to try my luck!
I was given a voucher for free coffee and a slice of the Pupp cake at the cafe, which I gladly accepted. I let the server know I do not drink coffee, and she provided me with a delicious hot chocolate to compliment my lovely slice of cake.
I made sure to check out the spa area. The pool is spacious and varied, I particularly loved the private meditation pools off to the side, very relaxing! Powerful jets too, I gave myself a nice massage with them. Wonderful sauna selection as well, with the herbal sauna being my favorite.
I really have no complaints. I would be delighted to return to the Pupp on my next trip to Karlovy Vary as it was an experience I am already eager to relive!
