When we arrived at Ojo del Mar and saw the open bungalow we were somehow surprised. We had seen the pictures, but being in the completely open bungalow feels strange at the beginning. But it is exactly the way it has to be! You really live in the middle of the jungle. We could watch small monkies having breakfast in the palmtree just in front of our bungalow. Once I woke up in the night and heard a sound. Went to see and it was an armadillo. The nature is absolutely wonderfull. I would definitely come back to Oje del Mar not only because of the nature but because of the food! The home cooked dinners were the best we had in Costa Rica. I even copied some recipies to cook the meals back home. Thank you Nico for the wonderful stay!
Nico's lodge is beautiful, simple and surrounded by nature. Open cabanas and bathrooms take you out of your busy urban life and back to the rainforest, especially when the troops of monkeys pass overhead! Delicious home cooked food. Banana pancakes are amazing!
My wife and I stayed here 4 nights as part of a lovely tour with RR Escapes. The setting is very natural, with the sounds of the rain forest all around. Rooms are open (no walls or windows) so no A/C but we were comfortable. Expect to enjoy the sounds of howler monkeys in the early morning. The food was certainly a highlight. Our meals were included in the package and it was plentiful and delicious. My wife has a very bad milk allergy. The owner, Nico is a fantastic chef and served up a great variety of healthy and delicious meals - all milk free for my wife!
Ojo del Mar is a stunning lodge right on the beach. We adored our cabina with howler monkeys right overhead (do bring excellent earplugs!), and we were fine with the 15 minute hike along the beach or jungle path to get to lovely Pan Dulce beach for swimming. You'll see an incredible number of animals at this location, from scarlet macaws and morpho butterflies to howlers and white-faced capuchin monkeys, plus coatis and snakes and very large spiders . . . it's truly the jungle. A shout-out to the wonderful short-order breakfast cooks at Ojo del Mar--they're kind and flexible and altogether delightful. Breakfast is plentiful. After that, food choices are very limited, especially if one is vegetarian or lactose intolerant. I paid $22 for a plate of vegetables one night, and went to bed hungry and resentful. Find out what, specifically, the lodge chef plans to serve for dinner that night, and note that you can opt instead to go to the expensive and excellent Martina's Restaurant within a short walking distance from the lodge. (The Friday night scene at Martina's is a hoot and a half--expats, locals, kids, dogs--don't miss it!) The lodge's little pool is perfect for children, and for cooling off . . . like the rest of the Osa Peninsula, this area gets hot, and stays hot. If you're looking for a vacation that gives you up-close encounters with animals, birds and insects in a breathtaking jungle setting, this is the place for you. One more note--learn a little Spanish, so you can converse with the Costa Rican employees at the lodge. You'll be glad you did!…
We had an amazing trip to a gorgeous Eco Lodge, Ojo Del Mar. This lodge is an off the grid, sustainable and luxurious ocean front property with delightful open air bamboo cabins. The owner, Nico is warm and welcoming and a fantastic chef serving up healthy and delicious meals! Our hiking tours with Mickol were fantastic and we enjoyed his knowledge of the jungle and the animals immensely! I am so happy that we were able to stay in this spectacular place! #ojodelmar
