Travelers' Choice
Perched on the jagged rim of the crater, wreathed in morning mist, camouflaged in river-stone and cloaked in indigenous creepers, the Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge is a triumph of ecological and architectural fusion. Sensitively constructed so as to take nothing from its environment whilst affording endless vistas over the heat-shimmering reaches of the crater below, the clustered boulder-built buildings of the Lodge hug the crater rim, linked by rope-lashed timber walkways that skirt the buttressed roots of ancient, liana-hung trees.

A very nice place in a great location. The lodge location and views are top notch. It is very close to the crater for game drives and all rooms have great views of the crater. We did knock it down one spot, more as a personal preference for us. This is a larger lodge with a lot of people in the lounge and dining areas. We stayed at other places that were much smaller and had a much more intimate feeling. But for Ngorongoro Crater, it is a very nice place and we would recommend this lodge for anyone visiting Ngorongoro Crater.

This was the second of four Serena Hotels we stayed in for our Tanzania safari. The building is in a perfect location, there are very few lodges in the area. The buildings are built into the beautiful surroundings and the view from the bed, especially at sunrise, was gorgeous. It was crowded with a few tours, so it probably feels different to people who had previously stayed in tent camps. For us, the luxuries of staying at this beautiful lodge outweighed any other consideration. Herman, the manager, stopped by both nights at dinner to make sure we had everything we needed. The service across the facility was top notch. They also made our lunch meals to go. A drive through the crater is like a wildlife aquarium, great assortment of animals. It was the most crowded of the parks we visited, even though this is the low season. I'm sure in high season it is crazy in the park.

This hotel’s best feature is the incredible view of the crater from every room. We couldn’t get enough of sitting on our balcony and enjoying it. The rooms were spacious and comfortable. Service was terrific. Food was buffet style. It was serviceable but nothing to write home about. This is an excellent choice on the way to or from the Serengeti. BTW, if planning a trip I would focus my time on the Serengeti. The crater is amazing to view from above but not nearly as amazing as the Serengeti to drive through. A couple of hours would suffice and it would be no great loss if you just enjoyed the amazing view and pressed on to the Serengeti.

For as big as this place is, the service was pretty good. Huge buffets for dinner. It really needs a full revamp, very old decor, the rooms felt like they were straight out of the 70's. The views of the crater were amazing, we still had a great time, lots of room for the kids to run around and meet new friends.

The location is spectacular and views are amazing. The rooms themselves are fine, clean and maintained. Maybe we were fortunate in our other accommodations, as the food here was average at best, especially the vegetarian options. Very crowded. Evening entertainment smooshed into the bar area which made it both hard to enjoy and drink and conversation and hard to see the entertainment easily.

Loved it! The views from the hotel were amazing! Our room was very well maintained and comfortable. The staff was very friendly and the food was great! Their nightly entertainment was enjoyable. The Masai were able to sell some of their items just outside the restaurant/lounge area. The hotel was full, but staff were very well organized and knew how to get us all checked in/out and settled. Plenty of staff and ready to assist! Kudos to Serena!

This hotel is an amazing location. It is located high up on the side of the Ngorongoro crater and has amazing views. I stayed here the night before my Ngorongoro safari with Altezza tours as it was part of the package. It left me wanting to come back and stay longer. The rooms are very comfortable and clean with patios overlooking the crater. The stone work of the building is unbelievable. The food at the restaurant was good quality and large selections served at the buffet. Service from the staff was excellent and they are very attentive. I would love to return here and stay for a few nights and do a safari again. It is an amazing location.

Magnificent views! Rooms are nice but decor is outdated. An amazing experience for safari, the staff are friendly and attentive. Food is above average. We loved the peacefulness and tranquility of the environment. Tanzania can indeed showcase luxury and class

We had an incredible stay at Serena Safari Lodge. The staff was absolutely incredible, friendly, and accommodating. The accommodations were clean, neat, spacious, and beautiful. We had an incredible view overlooking Ngorongoro Crater from our room. They had evening entertainment before dinner with acrobats performing that was very enjoyable. Would highly recommend staying here!

After other lodge experiences in Africa, this was our least appreciated one. Don’t get me wrong, the views from the balcony down to the Crater are amazing, and definitely a highlight. But in all other aspects, it is a lodge catering to mass tourism and tour groups. We prefer the more intimate setting of smaller lodges.

Response from Herman Mayunga, Other at Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge
Responded Jan 17, 2024
Dear Traveland Thank you for taking your time to share your experience during your recent stay with us. We are committed to deliver services that exceed our guest’s expectations and I have noted with concern that we did not live up to that promise. As mentioned, the fact that you found our lodge the least appreciated due to to mass tourism and groups during your stay with us, is an occurrence that we deeply regret. We have identified our weakness in the mentioned areas of our operation and I have taken appropriate and corrective measures to ensure that the same does not happen again to you or any other guest. Thank you once again for sharing your feedback and we look forward to welcoming you back. With regards Herman Mayunga Assistant Lodge Manager
