Recently stayed at Club Surf Popoyo for 8 days on a solo surf trip. Highly recommend the place. Owners Fillipo and Barbara where very welcoming and helpful as well was their entire staff. Rooms where clean and ocean is your backyard. They helped me organize surf lessons with a local instructor also helped me rent boards. Restaurant is great as well daily pre surf breakfast and the pizza is amazing as well as every other meal I had on my stay. They also help organize surf trips to other spots near Popoyo which is a plus to people who want to explore different breaks while in Nicaragua. Had a great time and highly recommend it.

It was my second time staying at Club Surf Popoyo. Now, for 3 months. Best place to stay, 10 minute walking to the main wave, great place, clean rooms, amazing pizzas. All you can expect to have a great trip. Felippo and Barbara are fantastic. It's a place to be part of a family.

I had such a positive experience at Club Surf Popoyo that I joined tripadvisor so I could post this review.
You can surf right in front of the hotel. The beach is lovely, unspoiled, & undeveloped, with 3 foot swells when I stayed there in mid-November. The rooms were clean & comfortable. The hospitality was welcoming and gracious. And the food (included in the surf packages) was spectacular.
I've visited Costa Rica several times, & Guatemala, but wanted a surfing vacation this time. Initially I looked at San Juan del Sur. But a Nicaraguan friend told me JSDS was touristy, & Popoyo was where the locals surfed.
I found Club Surf Popoyo through tripadvisor, & stayed for one week with 5 friends from Denver, Houston & Austin. Prior to our arrival, the owner, Filippo Biancu, responded to our emails within 24 hours. Filippo met us at the Managua airport, we loaded up his Land Cruiser, & it was a bumpy 3 hours to the Pacific.
Once we arrived, we headed directly to the beach (a 1-minute walk from our rooms), & were delighted to discover we had the beach to ourselves. Not one condo, beach chair, umbrella, or other sign of development. Later during our stay, the locals used a team of oxen to pull driftwood off the beach.
Club Surf Popoyo has modern conveniences like free wi-fi, private bathrooms with hot water, & air conditioning (not to be taken for granted in Central America). Filippo is an environmental engineer from Sardinia who fell in love with Nicaragua. Fortunately for you, he worked in a pizzeria in college, & you will have the best wood-fired pizza of your entire life, while hearing Pacific waves crash in the background. We had lobster, fresh fish, burgers, & perfectly cooked pasta. Filippo's partner Barbara is a delightful hostess as well. We looked forward to seeing her smile every morning at breakfast.
Filippo & Barbara really went out of their way to make my birthday wonderful, & make us feel welcome. We felt like we were visiting friends in Nica. In fact, we have invited them to come stay with us in Texas & Colorado, & I hope they will take us up on it.
Gerald is the resident surfing instructor/tour guide. You can surf right in front of the hotel, or he will take you to other surf breaks via SUV or boat. A special treat was taking a speedboat out to Lance's Left. Other surfers had to paddle out from the rocky shore. It's much easier jumping off the boat directly to the waves! Gerald will also take you to the local hot springs (very relaxing after surfing), or other excursions if you don't feel like surfing all the time. In-room massages are available for $20 an hour. Bring bug spray for mosquitos, & plenty of sun block.
Popoyo is a place for travelers, not tourists. We met surfers from all over the world - France, Australia, Hawaii... but we still felt like we had our own private beach.
Come to Nica, & stay with Filippo & Barbara for a week... You'll fall in love with Club Surf Popoyo, & want to come back!!

This place is incredible - great rooms that are cleaned daily, air con and fan, hot water, fabulous restaurant with to die for food and the owner is friendly, hospitable and laid back. It feels like a five star resort, without the price tag and without the arrogance. Highlights on the menu: lobster pasta and make sure you come for pizza night! The owner is Italian - you won't get pizza that good anywhere else in Central America.

I just recently stayed at club surf for a week long trip and I must say I had the best experience due their kind staff, great location for perfect waves, and unbelievable food. Club surf has the best restaurant in the whole Popoyo area. Club Surf is also in the perfect location between several great surf breaks that are just a short walk away and they will set up boats trips as well. All of the rooms have air conditioning and are definitely a comfortable size. It is a small Hostel which is great and most of the rooms face towards the surf. Transportation to and from the airport can also be arranged which is a huge help. Overall, I will be returning to Club Surf every time I visit Popoyo. Highly recommend!!!

Me and my buddies came down to Nicaragua in search of good waves and an easy place to rest our heads. Let me tell you, we got way more then that while staying at Club Del Surf. Filippo is the man, he will accommodate any of your needs and make sure you are more than 100% happy while on your trip. He hooked us up with the sickest surf trip guide, Gerald who showed us all of the local surf spots, and even got us to score some sick spots alone. Trust me, go to this place! You will get way more then what you expect.

Three friends and I took a 9-day surf trip to Nicaragua and stayed here when the big swell hit in early July (2014). We SCORED on both surf and accommodations. This place is awesome. Fillipo is a very accommodating guy and can help you out with anything you need, especially day-long boat trips. Sure we might have struggled ordering or asking for things because our spanish was lacking, but Fillipo speaks great english and we got by just fine, even with the native servers. The place is well-kept, clean, and simple. Rooms have A/C, lights, and a restroom--what else do you need? The dining area/ restaurant is located around the corner from the rooms and is a great place to hang out after a long day of surfing. Fridge is stocked with water, gatorade, and most importantly, cerveza! THE FOOD, oh the food! It was so awesome. Our $ rate included breakfast and dinner and we were able to choose whatever we liked from the menu. Our daily schedule was to surf at sunrise, come back in for a heaping plate of pancakes and fruit for breakfast, go back and surf til lunch, come back and eat, go back and surf til dark, come back and eat (usually carb-load with pasta), maybe talk about the day with fellow surfers, then PASS OUT and do it all over again. This place is an economical and practical stay for traveling surfers, as well as family since there is plenty exploring to be done in this region of Nicaragua. Lastly, and perhaps most importantly for us college-folk, we were very satisfied with our tab at the end of our trip. Will definitely be coming back ASAP!

Fillipo and his wife Barbara are the best! We wouldn't go anywhere else when we travel to Nicaragua for our surf trips. Best food, friends, and above all smiles! We love these guys every year! How can you be the best food and friends in the area! Its a must go as long as we always can come back ;)

Club Surf Popoyo is now, and for the last 3 years, my go to spot in Nic. Excellent service, clean rooms, and the best food anywhere. Pizza (or Calzone) nights are a highlight. The food is not only good but healthy too. The location is perfect for the reef breaks just down the beach and beach breaks right out your door. I go to surf as many hours a day as I can, and I can do that here. I can usually surf both the first and last days of my trip...
Boat trips can be arranged through the hotel or you can go with fellow guests. I always meet other passionate and (almost as crazy as I am) fanatic surfers and travelers.
The staff is wonderful and attentive to all your needs.
I have always scheduled Airport Pick up and drop off through the hotel and have never been disappointed. The drivers are always there ready to pick you up on time, and do what ever it takes to get you to the airport on time.
