We checked into our hotel around 9pm and took our bags to our room. We went to the bar for some drinks. It was about 10pm now. The bar was about to close and we went back to bed for the night. My husband decided to check the mattress ( he is licensed in USA to identify pests) and to our surprise there was a bed bug infestation! We frantically were trying to get a hold of a manager or someone to help us. We called the number they had given us, emailed them twice, and even talked to the security guard on campus who just stared at us when we asked can you get a hold of someone??? Now it is 2am and it has been hours of calling, driving and looking for a hotel that could accommodate us. We also have to find a place that can wash all of our clothes in hot water (in order to stop the infestation)... only place we found was Rancho Santana one of the most expensive hotels in Nica. When we came back the next morning they acted like it was NO big deal. The owner mike not only did not want to give us our money back but would not answer any of our phone calls and told the female manager that he will not talk to us... Thank God they finally decided to after a couple of hours of going back and forth about it! What an awful experience!!! I will NEVER recommend Nica Waves to anyone. We came for a vacation and they made the situation so much worse and stressful than it had to be.

We (2 couples) had the worst experience and was forced to leave in the middle of the night. After arriving at Nica Waves at about 9pm we unloaded our bags in our room. 9:45pm Went to the bar for a few drinks after our 4 hour drive from the airport. Bar closed at 10pm. Went back to the room and decided to check all our beds before going to sleep. Come to find out all our beds had a bed bug infestation that did not permit us to sleep in the rooms they provided. Also all Our clothes are now contaminated. 10:30pm. No one was at the resort to help us nor did anyone answer the phone numbers or emails provided. We were forced to leave and find another accommodation somewhere else. It wasn’t till 2am till we finally found a place to accommodate us. All our clothes were contaminated so we needed a place to wash all our clothes with hot water (Nica Waves showers were cold). The only other accommodation that had availabilities was Rancho Santana... one of the most expensive resorts in Nicaragua. The next day we went back to Nica Waves to finally talk to someone. They said we should talk to Mike the owner and explain what happened. After 2 hours of trying to get a hold of him Mike refused to talk to us. I called him About 6 times. We kept having to have his employee message him through an app. Their boat driver was the most help and actually got ahold of him and told us he doesn’t want to deal with us. I explained to the boat driver that I didn’t want to cause a scene and freak out all the other guests but we need to get this taken care of. Mike barely gave us our money back... thank God.. Our credit cards have a 5% charge and he wasn’t even going to give that back. We have to argue with the manager to give it back. I thought the least he could do was help us with our expensive night stay.. but his employees said no. I still have not been able to talk to mike directly not has he tried to reach out. Back in the United States I am licensed in pest control to identify these types of bugs. ALWAYS CHECK YOUR MATTRESSES!! The employees at Nica Waves didn’t even know what bed bugs are.. they can infest your clothes and leave bug bites all over your body. They’ll even come back with you to your home and infest your mattress, clothes, walls, and carpet. It’s not cheap to get rid of them either once they come back with you.. Some cases even require your entire house to be fumigated. A simple YouTube video and a flash light can help you identify them. I will never recommend Nica waves due to our awful experience and customer service. He ruined our first two days in Nicaragua. Mike obviously doesn’t care about his business. I hope this review reaches everyone before they plan on there.

We can’t ask more from this wonderful place!!! Our stay was for July 23-25, but once we got to Nicawaves we decided to stay the whole week. The owner Mike was a great help planning our stay in Nicaragua. First, we’re picked up in Managua which I strongly recommend coz roads in Nica don’t have signs. It was very safe and the driver Myler made us feel welcomed in his Country. Once we got to Nicawaves our rental pick-up truck was waiting for us. Yes, the hotel ask Avis to bring the unit to us!!! The hotel staff (Damaris, Karen, Cynthia and forgive me if I missed a name)treated us very professional, like family. And the room was superb with very comfy beds and steps from the pool. Then we meet Gerald. For all our stay he was our surf/tour/photographer guide!!! Thanks to him we’re able to visit different breaks and got to know the locals. I recommend hiring his services, you won’t be disappointed. A week wasn’t enough to enjoy such a beautiful country!! The hotel might not be at the beach but is closed enough to hear the crashing waves at night. We enjoyed good food, cleanliness, privacy, good service, peace and coziness here. All that made us want to go back again!!! Thanks Nicawaves for making our stay the best!!

I can not recommend this place highly enough. The staff went above and beyond to make my stay incredible. For example I lost my phone on the beach and Mike the surf guide went out of his way to find it for me. The atmosphere here is awesome. All the staff are chilled out, always happy to help and are very professional. It’s clean, the dorms are spacious and everything important is right where you need it. It is a short walk to the beach and is convieniently situated near all breaks. This place would be awesome for anyone travelling alone, as a couple, group or even with a family. I think there has been complaints about it being a way away from the beach but no matter where you are in Popoyo, there is defiantly walking involved if you want to experience the different breaks (or even to get to a shop) as it’s such a spread out place. Saying that, if you don’t like walking you can hire a bike. I will defiantly be returning to Nicawaves. I wish I had discovered it sooner!

Do not stay here if you are a beginner surfer. And if you are an experienced surfer, then definitely stay in the area called Guasacate as it's a surfer town where you can walk to good surf breaks along the beach and rent surf boards for $5 as opposed to $15 per day. Almost drowned because the guides took me and my friend out to an advanced/pro-surf break during a storm with very strong winds. It was my first time when I had to scream for help as I was getting pummeled by wave after wave. Come only if you would like a very isolated and poolside weekend getaway and do not care for food as it is overpriced and not tasty. The accommodation (they recently renovated certain rooms so those are super fresh!) and the pool was the best part of the stay at NicaWaves. Picked this place because the website said that the camp accommodates beginner surfers and has all-inclusive packages. Disclaimer: the packages were not all-inclusive and although the website listed surf instructors and equipment as part of the package, on Day 3 we were told that instructions were separate and surf boards had to be rented separately. We were never explained the difference between instructor and guide. The lessons were conducted by often hung-over surfer guides. Felt very isolated from rest of the town and had to be driven everywhere by often drunk personnel. Will not come back to the same camp, if I ever go back to Nicaragua. It seemed like we were being haggled everywhere we went. A trip to "Las Salinas hot springs" advertised as a recommended experience and included as part of the package was very misguiding as it was more of a swampy dirty pool water situation as opposed to a relaxing experience that was sold to us.
