Located in South Central Serengeti, within the Moru Kopjes area, Serengeti Pioneer Camp is ideally situated to offer superlative access to the annual migration and the ‘Big 5’ with sweeping views overlooking Moru Kopjes, Lake Magadi and the endless plains. Paying homage to the mobile camps of the 1930’s, a time when an African safari was truly a journey into the unknown, Serengeti Pioneer Camp’s ‘zero footprint’ and close proximity to nature combines to make an unmistakably distinctive and truly individual offering. Comprising of twelve-tented rooms, all of which have en-suite facilities including a flushing toilet, vanity basin, and showers, the tent interiors are designed to evoke the very best of an era long-gone but certainly not forgotten.

Serengeti Pioneer Camp by Elewana offered an unforgettable safari experience in the heart of the Serengeti. The main camp’s location on a ridge provided stunning views, and being an open, unfenced camp added to the adventure. Guards accompanied us to and from our tents at night, a necessary precaution as wildlife roamed freely. One evening, a leopard passed through the camp, and during the day, we were treated to the sight of impalas dashing through.
Our guide, Alex, was experienced and always teaching. On our first day, he put in an impressive 11 hours to ensure we witnessed the Great Migration, a truly awe-inspiring sight with over 10,000 wildebeest and 5,000 zebras. Alex’s expertise and dedication brought us close to three cheetahs and other incredible wildlife, making the long drives rewarding. The Serengeti’s expansive landscape, while beautiful, required significant driving to locate animals, especially during the short rains when water is plentiful, dispersing the wildlife. After our long first day, we chose a relaxed four-hour drive the next day and then a seven-hour outing with a packed lunch on our final day. We would have appreciated his understanding that when we requested to return to camp, it was because we were genuinely ready to do so. While he was extremely knowledgeable, we felt his ability to “read the room” in these moments was not as strong as that of other guides.
The spacious tent accommodations blended comfort and wilderness beautifully. Our family stayed in tents one and two, which are at the lowest point of the camp and due to location seemed to have more flying insects.
The camp staff were attentive and friendly. Ramsi, the camp manager, ensured our stay was seamless, while Elimo, our waiter, provided excellent service, including coffee and tea delivered to our tent at sunrise. Mali Mali kept our tent spotless, adding to the comfort. Sundowners in the lounge, overlooking the plains, were a highlight, providing a peaceful transition to dinner each evening.
The culinary experience had its ups and downs. Initially they were on top of my allergies but later missed some of our dietary restrictions, resulting in stomach issues for a few members of our group. Afterward, they personally checked in before each meal to address our concerns, but the initial oversight was disappointing.
The camp’s masseuse, delivered quality massages in our personal tent overlooking the Serengeti—a serene and relaxing experience that left us refreshed after long game drives.
A note on pricing of extras. They seemed a bit high. Not sure why they were so much more than at Elewana Lewa Safari Camp.
Overall, Serengeti Pioneer Camp offers a memorable safari experience with a mix of comfort, adventure, and wildlife encounters. We stayed for four nights, most travelers will likely find three nights sufficient. While there were a few challenges, the camp’s open design and incredible location in the Serengeti make it a worthwhile choice for those seeking an authentic safari.

I'll start by saying that my wife and I had a great time here at this camp, although it wasn't very long. We spent two nights on our way along a 5 day safari. The service was amazing. We were greeted both days upon arrival with moist towels to freshen up with from our game drives, warm or cool depending on the weather. Everyone we interacted with was friendly and helpful. Our primary housekeeper, Mercel, ensured our room was always in great shape for us and he was our server at meals. Every step of the way, the staff here ensured we were taken care of, from waking up at 3 am to prepare for a hot air balloon ride - they had fresh coffee and hot chocolate for us - to guides taking us to and from our tent when it was dark. I truly felt like we never needed to worry about anything.
Staff aside, the wildlife experience is simply amazing. To start, the view of Serengeti from the lounge area is nearly unbeatable. Then at night, we could hear numerous wildlife just living around us. Lions would wander into camp and make sounds to each other nearby. Elephants were literally right outside our tent. It was thrilling, but never frightening.
For the basics, the tents are private. The beds are huge. Each tent has hot water and a toilet. They are decorated with very traditional features, but have everything you need to be comfortable in 2024. There is Wi-Fi throughout the camp, including your tent and the lounge. There's a small swimming pool that we didn't have time to take advantage of, but it looked nice. The food was always excellent.
To truly experience all this camp has to offer, I would probably go for a longer stay than we did. 4 or 5 nights would be amazing.

We visited the Serengeti Pioneer Camp in the Central Serengeti for the first time in March 2019 during a Chameleon tour. For me personally, the Pioneer Camp is the epitome of safari! The tent camp is a non-footprint camp, so if it is dismantled, it leaves no trace in the Serengeti landscape. The location on the hill is fantastic, because an afternoon in the "bar" with an incredible view of the Serengeti, hearing, feeling, smelling everything. Just letting your mind wander, immersing yourself in Africa. There is no better place than there. An excellent dinner in the evening, then around the campfire with a few other guests. The Maasai look after us and share their incredible knowledge of their country with us. The guides there have the right instinct and are happy to engage with their guests. I also had a "massage" in the family tent back then, it was amazing. Now we will return on February 24 for 4 nights so that we have enough time to go on game drives but also have time to just take it all in.

Excellent place! Everything was amazing - the tents with interior were completely fantastic in authentic Karen Blixen style without a finger to put on anything. There rests a very special atmosphere and tranquility over the camp which was guarded by a spear-woven masai with Authority until the sun rose again. The food and serving were of the same very special atmosphere with the tables outdoors in the restaurant area lit by lanterns. The food was also exquisite with new daily very delicious menu. The service was extremely friendly and welcoming and we felt very welcome. The venue has a lounge bar raised above the lodge with a unique view of the savannah. We would in every way recommend this wonderful place!

Pioneer Camp is a great stay, they make you feel like family. Its facilities are extraordinary, you can direct from an excellent view to the Serengueti and see the sunrise in a unique way. This is our third safari… and in many ways was the best so far, both in terms of what we saw, how well we were looked after and our enjoyment of the camp. We visited for four nights back in January. (It’s taken a while to get round to this!) There was an unexpectedly large amount of rain (usually at at night) This did not affect our viewing, though it did mean we twice had to stop to help out other safari trucks that had become stuck. I say ‘we’. We (myself, my wife and our two adult offspring) sat in the truck and watched with a cold beer while our driver and guide Alex helped pull others out of the mud. The days were usually dry and often sunny and we were able to see a huge variety of wildlife, often at very close range indeed. We saw three leopards in trees, one very close, a pride of lions with a kill, a cheetah and her cub, a lone cheetah, jackals mongoose, hyenas, elephants (they were right on the edge of the camp one morning), hippos, crocs, a huge monitor lizard and loads of giraffe. We also saw zebra and many different types of antelope. On one day Alex took us to see the great migration which was a stunning sight, with hundreds, probably thousands, of wildebeest and other animals covering the vast plains. In most circumstances my 400mm lens was perfectly adequate. Alex was very knowledgeable and made a huge effort to ensure some amazing sightings and photos. In fact, all the staff at Elewana pioneer camp were attentive, helpful, friendly and polite, in particular Gasto, one of the managers. A special mention too for Juma who looked after us at meal times. One of the big surprises for us was the food. We expected it to be good and plentiful but in fact it was truly excellent — interesting, tasty and beautifully cooked and presented. The three-course evening meal in particular was something to look forward to. The camp has about a dozen tents that are scattered across the site and linked by paths. Animals can come through at night so we were escorted to and from the tents in the evening and remained safely zipped inside at night. Each tent was size of a large bedroom with a vast double bed, floor rugs, furnishings and a curtained-off area with shower, sink and loo. The hot water for each was provided by a little outside boiler and we had to remember to ask the staff to heat up the water for our shower before supper. Toiletries and towels were provided and the tent was made up each day. We slept very well indeed. That’s about it. The camp is wonderfully situated with a stunning overlook… you really are in the heart of the Serengeti here. We had a wonderful time thanks to the staff Elewana Pioneer Camp and would highly recommend it, both for the way we were looked after and the amazing animals were were able to see.

This was our honeymoon, and I don’t think we could have imagined anything better. From the prompt pick up at the airport, to the game drive enroute to the camp, and then the arrival at the camp. I wasn’t sure which way to look first, I didn’t want to miss anything. The arrival at the camp with cool towels (every time we came back) and all of the staff knowing us by name, made us feel so special. Elomi was always there to help us with anything we needed and often times before we even asked. He made sure that our morning coffee at sunrise was waiting on us on the boulder overlooking the Serengeti, my menu was always correct (food allergy), and our evening cocktail was always made with fresh ingredients. The tents remind me of glamping in the 1920’s, they were comfortable and cozy. The availability of a bathroom and warm shower in a tent was a feature I don’t want to ever live without. Marcel kept the tent tidy and the hot water bottles in the bed after turndown was an added treat. Listening to the animals at night and feeling like you are right in adventure was so amazing no words could describe it. Dinner time was always a favorite of mine, you always had a different table giving you a different view and experience. Chef Joseph will not disappoint in his culinary talents. John Fabian, what can I say besides extraordinary!! Starting with drinks and snacks at the airport when picking us up, until the drop off at the same airport 4 days later, he became family. He asked our favorite animals and delivered on seeing each one multiple times. We were lucky enough to see the Big 5 and the Ugly 5 and usually up close. The conversations, fact giving, comedy delivering game drives were outstanding. He knows his stuff, his English was exceptional, and has sold us on coming back in the future. I cannot say one bad thing about this camp, safari, or overall experience of a lifetime. The people truly love what they do, everyone is grateful, and always happy.

All our trip has been amazing. The whole staff of the lodge is superb. Alex, the guide of our tour, has gone beyond our expectations. The food, prepared by Joseph, has been a vacation on itself with the fusion of African flavors and internacional ingredients, diverse and exquisite. Elia, Dan and the staff in charge of the security of the camp went beyond their job teaching their knowledge of the site to our teen age kids and always looking for our safety. The location of the camp has a priviledged view of the Serengheti sabana…We had the most wonderful experience with impalas and other wild animals passing through the camp😁❤️. Thank you to Big Fred, Remsi, Elimo, Nikson and all the staff that working in the lodge, offering an incredible experience and always with the best attitude and great smile. We are a family of 4( 2 parents, one girl (15) and a boy (12))

Our guide Deo showed us things we could never have spotted. The staff at the camp fed us amazing food, brought us a cake for dessert on our last night, entertained us, and took us safely to our rooms at night (even when we heard lions and leopards at night time!) The camp is just great and the folks here are knowledgeable and so welcoming. We had a great time.

The Pioneer Camp is in central Serengeti. We realized that there are different types of hotels and camps, most of them secluded and with access restricted to guests.
Serengeti is really huge, so everything is far from any place. You should better contact a tour company to guide you. There are a bunch of them for different budgets and bilingual guides.
Hello from Elewana.
Thank you for your email. january is not the best time to come and see the Migration as it is really only travelling through the Serengeti between early June and late August. I would very much like to share a link with you via our website but Trip Advisor does not allow us to do this, for some strange reason. However if you go to our site at Serengeti Migration Camp or Serengeti Pioneer Camp, you will see a link for the Migration route and times of the year. Check this out so that you can see the Migration path.
If you are coming in January, there is so much to see at Tarangire, Ngorongoro and still in the Serengeti. It is one of my favourite times of the year as it is quieter, not as hot and a little quieter in terms of tourism, especially towards the end of the month. Should you wish to contact me (Jason Barry) please go to our contacts page on the elewana Collection website and seek me out. Then we can communicate directly.
Best regards
