Kokapu Distant from the crowd, closer to nature Far from the noisy, crowded cities, hiding between the Zemplen mountains in the so-called Hegykoz area is the Kokapu Hunting Lodge and Hotel situated. The romance of the relaxation in the wilderness is calling already upon arrival through the road in the valley, while the breathtaking views of the lake and lodge building carries everyone away. Built along the lines of Swiss hunting lodges, Count Laszlo Karolyi ordered the lodge in the turn of 19th and 20th centuries. The once renowned hunting region between leaders of the state, Hegykoz now is well-known destination for tourist looking for clean, undisturbed ambience. Being isolated is its most attractive value, making it a fantastic hideaway, far from the bustle and stress. Surprisingly, the lack of Wi-Fi and mobile phone reception is appreciated, since it makes easier to leave our everyday thoughts and problems behind and focus on enjoying the moment in nature. Far from everything that could bring us back to hustle, starts relaxation.

In the middle of the forest, the telephone is the second village, but it's more positive than negative. The food is delicious, the service is very friendly, very nice all as if we were not in Hungary. It was good to relax in our room. The wellness area has two saunas, two Jacuzzi, swimming pool, children's pool, and it is not disturbed, the pool is too cold, so do not take the little things we like. Bowlling and other games are what we used to be, I recommend to everyone. The hotel sensation "Sam" who does not goats but Mouflon :)

I very much liked this place, 5-7 km from the nearest village, in the middle of the forest, you find a small hunting castle with 5 suites, a bit larger hotel building and a restaurant. This is the second-to-last station of the narrow-gauge railway running from Palhaza and is accessible either with car or the railway.
The selling point is certainly the castle. The small building is located on the top of a 15-20 m rock, so you have to walk a bit on stairs, but you should definitely book one of the suites up there. They are nice and spacious with fine bathrooms. The saloons and the wellness section (with jacuzzi, finnish and infra sauna) are at your discretion all day and it is very private as there are no hotel employees up there. This is a hunting castle, so there are a lot of stuffed animals and trophies up there.
If you stay at the suite, you can use all of the hotel services (bowling, 15-20 m swimming pool, fishing and rowing on the lake). The suite can easily accommodate a family of 4 (separate sleeping room with double bed and a sofa-bed in the livingroom). There are flatscreens in the suites with enabled HDMI ports so you can connect your media player for the children :-).
The restaurant has moderate prices and the food quality is average+, so the price/performance ratio is good.
The staff was honestly nice during the whole visit and tried to fix everything we asked.
The place is in a communication shadow, no mobile phone coverage (in some places you can get a connection but SMS only, no voice, maybe more if you have a non-smart phone with external antenna), wired telephone is available. Internet is offered over WiFi with satellite uplink.
The low rating for cleanliness is due to that we were there during the 3-4 days of ladybird swarming time so we had some 10s of them also in the room (all of them removed every day by the staff).

Our visit to Kokapu (Stone Gate) was exploratory to determine if we would want to stay there during a future summer return visit to Hungary. The answer was a definitive, yes! The combination of the Karolyi Castle (Hunting Lodge), Hotel Kokapu, Haromforras (Three Springs) Restaurant and the Erdei Kis Yasut (Forest Train) in the heart of Hungary's Zemplen Forest makes this place absolutely perfect for a quiet get away where you can hike, bike, swim, fish, and totally relax.

Very nice place hidden in the middle of nowhere. We went hiking a bit and then visited the restaurant. Very nice facility, warm welcome on arrival. Staff was friendly and helpful – kept taking care of our table all the time although the restaurant was full. They spoke English well. The menu does not contain many dishes, but they taste really good and are reasonably priced. It is available in Hungarian, Slovak and English. The nature is beautiful, we hiked a nearby hill, was quite steep, saw many animals (deer, badgers, hare). There’s a small lake right next to the hotel with boats but without paddles. It's worth visiting as the nature is beautiful and the place is magically tranquil. Ideal for a short getaway from the civilisation.

Only visited the restaurant but had such a terrible experience. Our waiter was rude and seemed bothered to even serve us. We came as a party of 10 people,no special requirements. We ordered from the menu (which they offer in english language among hungarian and slovak),however, the waiter was totally lost. He did not understand a word, any questions were useless. We ended up pointing at the actual dishes in order to get the order right. But ok. We did not have to wait long to get a luke warm deer soup. Not good. And the main course was no better. Rotten iceberg, onions and tomatoes in the salad, all dishes poorly seasoned, frozen side dishes (potatoes), smelly trout served as fresh...the only edible part was some french fries...of course our complaints were of no help as the waiter did not comprehend and only kept looking at us in awe,as if we were making those complaints up...meanwhile guests at another table returned their food as well...after this the waiter totally quit and we asked for the check...all we got was a receipt with the overall charge (no cost breakdown) It came down to approx 75€ for 10 people (5 soups and 6 main dishes with some mineral water and soda) We were glad to leave and not plannig to go back to eat there. The area is nice and Im sure it can be enjoyed with little children or just for walking and relaxing...but we lost appetite for sightseeing after our lunch...we came hungry and left hungry and disgusted by the actual service we were offered. Do not recommend this place at all.

We went on this trip as a family didn't stay in hotel but we ate at the restaurant, as a home chef and the owner of a restaurant myself I must say the service and the food sucks. As an American service is important even if the food is bad but to have both is was an insult. The servers spoke no English and even in their native tongue they couldn't understand. I wouldn't recommend this place to my dog if he was hungry.

Perfect long weekend destination if you enjoy time without mobile phone and Internet, instead, discovering local cuisine and Mother Nature's gems. Even better if you have kids as they will love the wast forests, streams, the playground and the little train.

I'm really sad, but in the last three years the place has got two points worse.
The restaurant's chef has been exchanged, I think, twice, both lead a drop in quality. Now it is below average with a much less interesting menu.
Things which were broken in the playground are still not fixed since years.
The internet access is now officially not offered because they think, this makes the place more special. I think this is a real mistake from the management, they could also cut out the warm water to make the place more interesting if they wish. They used money to install outdoor access points, but those are only available for the management and nobody else. I really don't see the point not offering internet, but offering telephone in the rooms. It is a real hassle if you would like to plan what to do before you start from the hotel.
Heating of the swimming pool is still not fixed, nor is the use of chlorine tablets in the jacuzzi.
I'm really sad, but we are not coming back for a few years at least.
