2 flights, 3 ground transports, a hotel stay, and a boat ride. This is what encompassed the 2 day travel each way from Florida, US to the little island paradise that we would call home for the best week of my life in 42 years. Cala Mia was the destination. A small island resort nestled in a cove of Isla Boca Brava in the district of Chiriqui off the coast of Panama. An All Inclusive resort that stands out from the normal mediocrity of what you’d expect from the All Inclusive label. A place with something extraordinary in the land, the activities, and most of all the people. The perfect destination for us, as after all, this was no ordinary vacation. On this trip, I would check off several bucket list catches. Marlin, Cubera, Yellowfin, and a wife. Yes, you read that correctly, not just a fishing trip nor a honeymoon. As an avid fishing couple who actually met via fishing, we could think of no better wedding in the crazy times of this uncertain and chaotic world than to elope and do it in one of the most secluded, gorgeous, and prolific fishing grounds of the world. When searching Panama, fishing, and wedding, Cala Mia raised it’s hand and said hold my Abuelo. David, who is the owner of this paradise resort, was very responsive and easy to communicate with. When I mentioned what the we were looking for packed into this journey, he said no worries and proceeded to lay out the options. We elected to spread out the 4 days of fishing with a 2 day break in between to enjoy some relaxation, horse back riding, and our wedding ceremony. Each change or adjustment that we ended up making was met with another “no worries”. He understands every aspect of his business and is able to conduct it like an orchestra. Behind David is a cast of employees that were again way above and beyond my expectations and previous experiences. Gladys and Alex were the stars of this show, on the hospitality side. Gladys worked with my bride-to-be to plan and select the location of our ceremony. Alex, who also happens to be the resident photographer, did photos with us on various parts of the island. These two appeared to be the Swiss Army knives of the outfit and, by far, made the whole experience extra special and extra personal. Gladys even stepped in as ring bearer and maid of honor. Drako, one of the resident dogs seemed happy to step in as my best man since Alex was on photo duty. We can not thank these two enough for an amazing week. For fishing, we selected a mix of inshore and offshore. We wanted to check off some of our bucket list but also didn’t want to just troll the whole time and get tunnel vision on the biggest Marlin. Standing at the gunnels while drifting for Cubera is hot business in the dry season of Panama. Roosters could be had with the time put in, however we opted to make the best of what was most promising at the time since the conditions weren’t ideal for them this week. David’s fleet offers a mix of CC and cabin cruisers to accommodate your goals of each day. My personal favorite for this trip was the Blackfin Cabin cruisers. Captain Antonio with Michael as his mate were able to mix up the trolling and bottom fishing in the same day with these boats. When it got hot, a short escape to the cabin for lunch, cold drinks, and a tug on the Abuelo was much appreciated. These two gentlemen worked exceptionally hard and put together a wonderful week of fishing for us. Our plane is now departing Panama City and Tampa bound so I’ll wrap this up. Hindsight always being 20/20, I can simply sum this up that we were blessed to have stumbled across David and his crew in our search. From the wedding, to the fishing, the food, hospitality, and all the little things in between, we could not have made a better choice. Thank you David, Gladys, Alex, and the rest of team Cala Mia from the bottom our hearts. Sincerely, The Rossavik’s…
