What a delight to arrive at the Awatuna Sunset Lodge after flying 20 hours from the US! A perfect start to our South Island tour and adventure. As an Airbnb owner I just want to say Elizabeth and Selwyn are host rock stars! The room was perfect, the view was perfect, and they have done everything possible to make a guest feel welcome and comfortable. The Argo adventure across the creek and on the beach was super fun. The drinks with canapes at sunset were complimentary and the hosts gave us great travel advise as we would have missed Hokitika Gorge which was stunning. Enjoyed the home cooked fish dinner, homemade preserves, eggs from chickens off the property, and the refreshing hot tub soak! This was our recovery stay from our long flight and we were totally refreshed after staying there. Thank you!

Thank you so much for the wonderful review Patty, we really appreciated you taking the time to write one. And, thank you for the great compliments, which are extra special coming from a fellow B&B owner. We are so pleased you and Jesse enjoyed your stay and left feeling refreshed for the rest of your trip. It was our pleasure to meet and host you both on your first night in New Zealand. Cheers Elizabeth and Selwyn

Our 2 night stay was amazing! We so enjoyed the hosts- Elizabth and Selwyn. Their hospitality and attention to detail were wonderful. We had a beautiful room with patio doors that opened onto the deck overlooking the Tasman Sea. A hot breakfast cooked to your request is presented and the coffee is prepared by your own personal baristas. Elizabeth prepares homemade breads and condiments for breakfast. The room was spotless and have a lovely en-suite. The hosts are very knowledgeable and offered lots of suggestions for things to do in the area. The hot spa in the evening was delightful. I highly recommend this as a place to stay- i think it is one of my favourite B&B's ever!

We booked a stay last minute as we were traveling the West Coast and were met by Elizabeth & Selwyn. They are very friendly and welcoming and made us feel right at home. The place is lovely. They have recently bought and renovated the lodge and the views of the sea are second to none!
We got a complimentary drink and nibbles when we arrived and breakfast with real espresso coffee was amazing.
It was great being an adult only resort as it's school holidays in New Zealand now and we've stayed at a few placed and were bombarded with children.
The room was beautiful and the bed was brand new and so comfortable. Would recommend to anyone traveling to the West Coast.

Our one night at Awatuna Sunset Lodge was at the very end of our 11 day tour of the South Island, and we only wish we had come earlier and stayed much longer.
This is our most outstanding memory of the whole trip - the warmth of the welcome, the comfort of our lodging, the peace and beauty of the location, and the amazing home cooked cuisine.
Elizabeth and Selwyn open their home and their hearts to their guests, starting with sundown drinks and canapés, followed by a home cooked meal by Elizabeth, masterfully prepared with ingredients from their own garden or locally sourced.
The hot tub in the garden overlooking the Tasman Sea at sunset is a special luxury. Overall, our time here was exceptionally peaceful, relaxing and comfortable, and our warmest memory of our time in New Zealand.

My son and I stayed three nights at this very comfortable and peaceful lodge.
Elizabeth, daughter of an Italian restaurateur has strong passion for cooking and hospitality. Spaghetti Bolognese for instance, ordered from the extensive menu,(orders in by 4:30pm) involves Elizabeth grinding lean rump steak, making egg pasta by hand (using her own chooks' eggs), making tomato sauce from fresh tomatoes.
If one orders pan fried fish Selwyn gets it fresh from a fisherman.
Canapé and drinks on the verandah as the sun sets over the Tasmansetting sun include Elizabeth-made crackers and dips, as well as Blackball salami and local cheese.
Of course the ice-cream is home made!
The whitebait is from the neighbouring creek which also has eels that can be fed, and which is traversed in Selwyn's "Mad Max" amphibian as part of a pounamu hunt.
Everything is done with enthusiasm and expertise.

What an amazing review! Thank you so much, we were delighted to host you! We loved having you both here for 3 days and enjoyed sharing conversations over sundowner drinks and canapes and hearing about your days' exploring the West Coast. It's wonderful your son could take some fantastic photos while here. It was an absolute pleasure cooking for you and taking you over to the beach in Mad Max, it's lots of fun for us as well. We hope to see you again next time you visit the West Coast. Cheers Elizabeth and Selwyn

This is an awesome place to stay, superb view of the sea to observe the sunset and moon set, absolutely the best place for an excellent evening meal with deserts to please the palate, walks along the beach, fossick for Pounamu, swim in the river, and soak in the spa.
The rooms are very clean and spacious with stunning views.
The beds are very comfortable ensuring an excellent night’s sleep.
There’s even a display of Awatuna beach stones made into pendants that can be purchased, so you can take a little piece of the beach home with you.
Elizabeth and Selwyn are excellent hosts and have created a very special place.
I can recommend a stay of multiple nights to enjoy this place.
I was having such a great time that I totally forgot to take photos!

We do have some beautifully made jewelry which is made extra special as many pieces are made from stones we have collected right here on the beach! From the time we arrived, everything was just perfect: location, room with a view on the ocean, the social appetizer if you feel encline to, delicious dîner and breakfast, without speaking of the confortable bed and perfect bathroom robes and products. We even tried for the first time an amphibian quad! Unfortunately, we only could stay for a night but we enjoyed it to the fullest. Thank you Elizabeth and Selwyn

Believe the 5 Star Reviews! This place is a little slice of heaven on the Tasman Sea near Hokitika. The location is great - only about 20 minutes to Greymouth and the Trans Alpine Train. Elizabeth and Selwyn were born to host and pamper people! We were greeted with warmth and enthusiasm - almost like they'd been waiting for us. The facility and grounds are beautiful and well maintained with a killer view of the Sea. Beds are comfortable and showers have great pressure and hot water. We dined at the Lodge both nights and enjoyed Elizabeth's perfectly prepared meals; Fish so fresh it had been swimming a few hours earlier, home made pasta with Amatriciana sauce, warm rolls, vegetables from their on site garden, finished with home made ice cream. Breakfast was cooked to order with bacon, sausage, eggs our choice, home made breads and jams. The ride in the amphibious vehicle was great fun! We enjoyed walking on the beach looking for special stones for hours. Overall this place is a perfect part of any west coast New Zealand vacation!

This lovely boutique accommodation is located right next to the beach, with access to a private creek for swimming. Aside from the stunning location, one of the best things about this place are the owners!
Elizabeth and Selwyn are energetic, welcoming, and a wealth of knowledge. Not to mention excellent chefs! Breakfast and dinner are provided for you here, along with canapés and drinks before dinner. The food has been delicious - it makes you not be able to wait for dinner!
This lodge is also self sustainable- they grow their veggies, collect fresh eggs from their chicken, catch their whitebait in the creek, collect and filter rainwater for drinking, and even make all their own jams and marmalades. Anything not grown on site is bought from environmentally conscious, local businesses! We absolutely love this!
As travel agents we stay in a lot of properties - and this is right up there with the best. If you are in this area you are missing out if you don't stop by!
They also have a fabulous amphibious vehicle and Selwyn will take you for a spin around the property and over the creek to the beach for some fun! For free! You have to do this. They also have a two seater ocean kayak for a trip up the creek!
Just visit - and tell them Janet the travel agent sent you!! You won't regret it!

A beautiful place to stay and rest, we only wish we stayed longer to enjoy the scenery and hospitality from the lovely hosts Elizabeth & Selwyn. Great breakfast and evening meals and the pre-dinner drinks was enjoyable to sit and talk to other visitors and the hosts of their travels and experiences. We will definitely stay again. We picked this place due to the location to the beach and the photos and we were not disappointed. Just beautiful - best B&B Lodge we have ever stayed at and great privacy as well as facilities.
