Villa Lario is a beautiful property with beautiful rooms and a pool on the shores of Lake Como. But that's where the great features end. This hotel is in a very remote location with no restaurants or shops within safe walking distance. Taxis cost approximately 80 euros one-way to the next, very small town. Water taxis were quoted at more than 200 euros one-way. With a ferry that stops running at about 7 p.m., we felt trapped. And don't be fooled by the photos on the website -- the boat docked at the hotel dock is the owner's private boat, and not for guest transportation. In addition, the food was unremarkable. Trying to be overly creative, but lacking flavor. Finally, the service was average. When I called the host to get assistance with the Sonos sound system (which did not work the entire length of our stay), she explained it was likely out due to a thunderstorm, and did not offer to send anyone to come look at it. When we asked for off-property dinner recommendations, they pushed the same two restaurants that were very touristy and not very good. When we asked for help making a dinner reservation at another hotel, they were unable to secure one for us. Unless you have unlimited funds for transportation around the lake, stay in a larger town at one of the grand dames like the Grand Hotel Tremezzo.

The hotel is very high quality, service is great and food excellent. The place is amazing. Finally, everything looks easy and perfect! Don’t need to choose to swim in the pool or in the lake: enjoy both!

We read about Villa Lario in a Conde Nast Traveller magazine and it sounded like the perfect hotel to spend our 25th Wedding Anniversary and first visit to Lake Como. Lario is more like staying in someone’s home, if only I had a friend with a home like this. The ambiance is relaxed, everything is tasteful and elegant and the staff are discreetly available and helpful. It’s also at one of the narrowest parts of the lake which gives interesting views both day and night. The hotel has its own pontoon so it’s very easy to gain access to the lake by boat or for swimming. There are lovely sofas everywhere to sit, relax and gaze at the beautiful view. By chance on the first evening the owners had a friend staying who is an opera singer and was giving a little recital. Hotel guests were invited if they wished. The setting was dreamy and we couldn’t quite believe where we were, just 10 of us with Prosecco in hand at the edge of the lake at our own private concert. A once in a lifetime treat. We stayed in Corner Suite 2 which is spacious and fresh with fabulous views. There’s a small separate seating area too along with a mini hidden kitchen with fridge and coffee machine. Access is very easy with a lift from the parking area to reception and another from reception to the lake level making it very accessible for elderly or disabled visitors or anyone who doesn’t fancy lots of steps. The restaurant is excellent and we ate there two of our three nights. The third we went to Il Sereno, a chic boutique hôtel about à 10 minute drive away. We had a superb meal there in their Berton al Lago restaurant. We hope to be back at Lake Como soon.

Everything was great from the room till the food. The spot is unbelievable and really well situed. Welcoming owner and staff with a high sense of service. You have direct acces to the lake which is really appreciable. I definely reccommend it for a couple who seek to chill out in excellent condition.
