Nestled in the Scottish Borders, SCHLOSS Roxburghe boasts a location that captivates guests with its beauty and convenience for regional exploration. While the hotel's ambiance marries modern chic with traditional elegance, and the spa's heated outdoor pool stands out for its luxury, the service quality appears to fluctuate—ranging from friendly to disorganized. Rooms are well-appointed but face scrutiny over cleanliness and value. Despite the commendable cleanliness of the grounds and spa, guests often feel the pricing, particularly for food and services, is excessive.

Our first long break away since Feb didn't disappoint. We had a lovely suite (room 7) with nice views over the garden, comfy 4 poster bed and nice big clean bathroom. Highlight was the food - we had three superb meals all beautifully cooked and very tasty, a combination of fish, venison and pigeon. With restrictions both dinner and breakfast were well organised, ALL staff wore masks and at no time did I feel uncomfortable. A few minor points - I had prior asked if they had an electric charge point, this turned out to be a 3 pin plug on an extension lead which wouldn't work on my car, suggest you don't offer this or have a proper one installed. Drink service was a little slow for me, very rare did they offer a top up, one night the bar was full so we were directed to the lounge and no one came to take our order (lost revenue) so we went to bed. I don't like guest dogs in hotels, something that is offered, especially a yappy one in a room nearby. I would change the dinner menu on your website to show the Ala Carte one, I was very wary that the one online was the only menu and almost put me off booking.

We booked 1 night here at the start of a 7 night holiday touring Scotland. It was one of the most expensive hotels we booked but given the standard of accommodation vs cost at other hotels towards the west coast, it was exceedingly good value for money by comparison.

The hotel has undergone extensive refurbishment internally, with a large bedroom/leisure extension being built separately due to be completed next year.

We were given room 5 on the 1st floor in the main building which was spacious with a terrace overlooking the gardens, it felt like a higher room category than we had paid for.... En suite was modern with plenty of luxury toiletries. Only downside was it was approx 27 degrees and the room was baking with no A/C or a fan. Dog bed and bowls provided were a lovely touch!

We drank/ate outside for both dinner and b'fast as the weather was glorious and were offered 1 of 3 menu's for dinner which was a nice surprise as we were expecting a limited bar menu. Food was excellent, although the service was slow.

We look forward to returning with our pup again soon and can't wait to stay with the new pool and spa next year.

The hotel is in a beautiful location and is spotlessly clean. Our deluxe double room was spacious and very stylish including walk in shower. All staff were extremely polite and couldn’t do enough for you. Quality of food at dinner & breakfast was excellent, although relatively expensive it was well worth it. Part of the hotel is currently under construction to build an additional 56 rooms including a Spa which when complete will enhance the experience even further. At present no construction work is taking place therefore it does not impact on your stay. Even better if you’re a golfer as the estate has a first class golf course on site. Will return and would highly recommend a visit.

The hotel is exquisite, the interior decor and furnishings are beautiful.

Our room also was very tasteful however It turned out to be in a courtyard outside with a shared front door to another room which was odd. You had to go outside to get to the main hotel and restaurant.
The room was also very very small. Smaller than a travel lodge room really. You could hear every bump and cough from our neighbours.

In addition little details were missing that made the stay abit frustrating. They didn’t provide any milk just powdered milk for tea in the room and there are no biscuits. They didn’t provide any useful information about the lounges and bars in the hotel or even the wifi password. This made us feel like fussy guests.
The staff were abit formal and unwelcoming.

In all it was a lovely stay and some of the staff really paid attention to detail. The bar is lovely and the food delicious! The breakfast was the best we had ever had in a hotel.

Paid massively more than the rate quoted above but instead of an anticipated room with a garden view we were given a small/ claustrophobic courtyard room with no outlook. Arrived late morning to play a game of golf and luggage had to be left in the car due to no one wanting it left in reception to be delivered to our room on our return from golf.

The room was so small I kept hitting the wall whilst in my bed. 2 of us sharing but only one set of small sized body wash, lotion snd shampoo and one bar of soap provided, which we had to share. One over-sprung armchair was the only only seat for 2 people.

Golf course was good but hotel standard very poor compared to Turnberry last year.

We had a pre-golf snack lunch in the clubhouse and were party to bar staff volubly complaining about lack of backup personnel / shift finishing and overheard an ad hoc arrangement for an inexperienced golf pro to stand in as bar staff. He’d no idea how to pour a beer. Not the standard expected from a “5 star” establishment.

I received an email thanking us for staying and when I replied that the room was not what I was anticipating and disappointingly small I did not even receive the courtesy of a reply.

Bitterly disappointed with the whole hotel experience. The golf course is well maintained and challenging.

My experience with Schloss Roxburghe was extremely disappointing. After booking a special New Year's Eve stay for my wife and I, we were contacted recently to be told that they had decided to cancel our booking. Why?

a) Initially they said "maintenance issues". Why would these be planned for New Year's Eve and be noted as a problem in early October?
b) When I called them they changed their tune and suggested that the entire hotel was being closed for New Year. Really? Why then is there a special Hogmanay event and the ability to book rooms on 30 Dec or 1 Jan?
c) On a third discussion they admitted there were no maintenance problems but there was some form of "system issue" that meant they had lost our booking. But this had been accepted online and I had been in touch via phone and email on multiple occasions ... No argument struck me as remotely honest.

They would never admit it however it is very clearly a situation where they have more demand than supply. We politely declined to sign up to their £350pp Hogmanay Gala Dinner, so it is easy to put 2 and 2 together and understand that another couple wanted to book directly and pay for this. We were bumped for the sake of their profits and treated very poorly with no form of compensation.

We will stay in a local B&B and spend our savings in a nice local restaurant, but others considering booking Schloss Roxburghe should be warned - given they chose to simply cancel our booking they will be doing this for other people too. Especially if you book via a website and not directly. Be warned!!

I rarely write reviews so something has to be spectacular or particularly jarring in order for me to take the time. Sadly, in this case, it is the latter and that’s a shame because the hotel was so close to having been a fantastic stay.
Instead of booking online, I phoned the hotel because I wanted to ensure we secured a room that was in the main house and not impacted by the major building works which are ongoing. Also, I needed to be confident that a specific dietary requirement could be met. I was confidently assured, on both counts, that my requests could easily be accommodated, so I booked.
Upon arrival, we were allocated a room in the courtyard. This is a couple of minutes walk from the main house and directly alongside the building works, and not what we wanted. So, straight away, we were battling with reception with regard to a quiet room while other guests stood watching. It was very uncomfortable. Eventually, we were allocated a room upstairs in the main house and, to be fair, it was very nice.
Our main disappointment was with the restaurant staff who failed to provide our dietary request even though this had been double checked upon our arrival. It sounds petty now but it impacted on a special celebratory meal. My wife discussed this situation with the GM who promised to look into it, but nothing more has been heard.
Breakfasts were painfully slow every morning. Yes, one has to allow for COVID precautions in the kitchen but waiting an age for a coffee refill and restaurant staff not noticing that dirty plates needed to be cleared from the table was the norm.
We did enjoy Schloss Roxburghe but with the prices they charge per night, the service should have been better. My main gripe though is “Don’t promise if you can’t deliver”. It’s the small things like that which can spoil a special break.

Lunch with 12 friends in the bar at “Schloss” Roxburgh. The name is ludicrous but leaving that aside, we had a pleasant time despite ridiculous expense for what was a very ordinary bar meal.
On the plus side the two girls and the gentleman serving us were very pleasant. The room is well decorated and comfortable. There were only 2 others there. I wonder where the customers will come from for the additional 60 bedrooms being built. If they think golfers will flood from all over the world to pay these prices, to play on what is a pleasant but undistinguished golf course, and eat very ordinary food, I think they are in for a rude awakening.

I had Dunkeld Smoked Salmon as a starter. To serve Tay salmon when the Teviot runs through the grounds and Tweed is a couple of miles away, shows either stupidity or ignorance. It definitely displays cultural insensitivity, but perhaps this menu was written by the new German management, unaware how this might be viewed locally.
My next course was Hamburger with chips and salad. The Hamburger was not home-made...if it was chef did a brilliant job of imitating a cheap hamburger, made with over-ground, poor quality beef. The chips were soggy. The tomatoes supermarket specials...totally tasteless.

Cheese was fresh out of the fridge and freezing cold. Again unforgivable.

My biggest complaint was the red wine. Charging £32 for a bottle of wine I can buy for £10.50 is I suppose, par for the course. To serve it freezing cold in an establishment purporting to be something special, is unforgivable. The waiter suggested putting it by the fire! Really!

If the new German owners of Schloss Roxburgh wish to succeed they will have to up their game dramatically- or drop their prices. I don’t expect they will do either so I won’t be returning.
Shame it is a nice house and I have visited often the past.

Dear AlunBeaconhill, We really do appreciate you taking the time to provide us with such constructive feedback that will allow us to grow. The experience that a guest or customer has is everything both in the immediate and longer-term futures, and to have let you down on elements of your experience like this is disappointing to all of us. We are proud to serve Dunkeld Smoked Salmon at SCHLOSS Roxburghe and do so for its outstanding quality. Quality which has been recognised by several Gold Awards over the last few years, from the Fine Food Retailers Great Taste Awards. Thank you for your positive comments regarding the service team and the newly decorated room. Our team are very passionate and try very hard to ensure that all guests have the best experience possible and your comments will be passed on to them. Your less flattering comments will have been passed on to the relevant teams and will be used to improve our customer service and guest experience. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to do this. We do hope that we will be able to welcome you back to SCHLOSS Roxburghe one day in the future.

We had a celebratory long weekend at this hotel. First impressions were how beautifully it had been renovated from the imposing reception area to the cosy lounges with plenty of comfortable seating . The log fires added a welcoming touch. The ladies in reception were charming and even dragged our luggage up a double flight of stairs to our room. What a pity the expensive overall did not include a lift. Our room was nicely furnished though only one chair only for a double room and had a lovely view of the building site where nothing seemed to be happening. Turn down on the first night was a surprise but when it wasn’t done on the second we assumed that it was first night only – then we were turned down on the third.
Now we come to it. There is great skill in the kitchen. Everything we had was beautifully presented and tasted well. But the menu was limited. The fixed price menu had only two choices while the a la carte had up to five. But whereas the fixed price menu changed during our stay the a la carte menu, despite being described as seasonal ha apparently been unchanged since the hotel reopened in April. One of the items was a pheasant dish which presumably had been in the freezer for six months since the end of the season. For an establishment that prides on fresh food why serve frozen pheasant when venison, grouse and Borders lamb are readily available and in season.
Another surprise was the very limited selection of French reds on the wine list, particularly in comparison with the number of Italians on offer.
In spite of this all the staff were charming and could not do enough for us, but perhaps more managerial supervision and training is needed.

Dear 4wheelsonmywagon, Thank you for your feedback from your recent stay with us. We are sad to hear that your overall experience did not live up to your expectations in certain areas. Due to the historic building and listed status of the main house the renovation sadly did not allow for a lift to be installed however as you mention our helpful team members are more than happy to assist with brining luggage to guest rooms and we are delighted that you enjoyed the cosy and welcoming atmosphere of the hotel. I am surprised to hear that you didn’t receive turndown on your second night as this service should happen daily for all guests. I’m sorry for this oversight and I will follow up with our Housekeeping team to ensure consistency moving forward. Our Food and Beverage Manager and Executive Head Chef have carefully selected items and dishes for our menus so we don’t overwhelm guests and we do place a focus on serving fresh produce from the estate and the local area. Thank you for your kind comments about our staff, we have a young team who are passionate about ensuring our guests enjoy their experience with us and we are delighted that they looked after you so well. We hope to welcome you back to SCHLOSSS Roxburghe in the future. Kind regards, Dominique Beer, Hotel Manager

What a lovely hotel! The staff were all lovely, the manager was so accommodating and friendly and made you feel so welcome. Some of the staff were younger but I liked that, they were all so lovely and attentive and genuinely enjoyed a conversation.

The room was in the courtyard and although you had to do a very short walk to get to the entrance of the hotel for dinner and breakfast, they provided umbrellas if there was wet weather. The rooms were gorgeous! Top stars for the rooms! Had everything you needed. Great lighting and table by the window, perfect for me to do a bit of painting.

I cannot wait for the spa to be finished as will certainly be back (maybe before). I came for a dog show and stayed over 4 days.

What can I say about dinner! Apart from the side you can take your dog into the bar/lounge room which was amazing - and still have the same dining menu! The main dining room was so lovely and classy. I felt well attended to. The chef I wanted to take home! I felt so well cared for being vegan. Offered multiple choices that weren’t on the menu but were amazing! They gave me different options every night! I have never had this, ever! Food was always hot and well seasoned and presented - and so delicious - I had to eat there every night!

Going through cancer treatment it was lovely to have a break away and I will definitely be back. Thank you so much to everyone at Schloss hotel who made my stay so special.

Yes, there were young children at the hotel during our stay. The parents ate dinner at a very early hour to accommodate their children's needs. Their breakfast was taken with the rest of the guests. It did not seem like there were any activities for children.
