After a few days without electricity due to the events of storm Arwen, my fiancé and I decided to take a trip up to Kelso for the night for some much needed relaxation! The Roxburgh hotel, is nicely situated just outside of Kelso. We arrived up to the hotel along the single track road, which gives a great private feel and takes you away from the hustle and bustle of life! We would say that the car park could maybe do with a little work, as it serves twofold for the golf course and hotel, and seemed a bit of a free for all. However on entering the building it is clear to see that the hotel has had some vast refurbishment. A warm fire burning upon entry providing a cosy feeling, with the library bar next door being very welcoming. We checked into our room and we would say it is one of the best we have stayed in recent times. Good in size and the interior was well designed and had a high class feel. We had a great nights sleep and could of happily stayed another night. The only negative we would say is the breakfast. Usually we would expect to be able to pick at a cold selection before moving onto the hot course, however nothing was really explained to us. We were provided with a menu, ordered the full Scottish and didn’t seem to have the choice of anything else without asking. I think that is an easy thing to train the staff to do. The breakfast was quite dry, it all seemed a little over cooked, and not fresh. The toast was also very hard and almost felt like it might have been frozen. On the whole (minus the breakfast) an excellent place to stay and I’m sure with the ongoing investment it will be a welcome place to stay in the future.

Dear GI2863, Thank you for your kind words and feedback. I am so pleased to hear that you enjoyed your overall stay with us here at SCHLOSS Roxburghe. It really is wonderful to hear that you got to experience our beautiful location on the estate and that you loved the luxury elements of your room as well as the welcoming atmosphere created by the warm glow of the cosy fireplace. Thank you also for your feedback regarding the car park, we are super excited for our extension to be complete next year which will provide us with more space in the cark park and a beautiful new spa for our guests to relax in. As the most important meal of the day we do freshly prepare all of our breakfasts to order and full continental options are available to all guests. I apologise that the breakfast wasn’t fully explained to you when you were seated and rest assured, I will be following up with our Food & Beverage Manager as an area for further training. As far as I can see these reviews are a mix of the old Roxburghe and the new Schloss. As a non golfer this golf course hotel failed to charm. I had hoped to meet the Manager Ms Beer but did not, I understand she does not work at the weekend. I booked the best/most expensive suite for 3 nights, called Schloss Suite also called Bowmont, also called room 14! First impression was not wrong, strange service and set up throughout our stay. At arrival time no staff could be found for some time, we went back outside and rang the bell. Our expensive room was not in the unpopular courtyard but up and down through various fire doors. I quickly realised we were over the kitchen wing, we could hear voices below, the kitchen extractor fan at our fire escape door and worsed of all a kitchen door that slamed all afternoon and evening shaking the end of our suite like a bomb going off, I reported it to staff several times. We had an excellent bathroom, though it seemed the two hand basind had no plug?but the bedroom was sparce. No plants or flowers. The German interior designer? had decided against propper curtains. Mostly we had wooden shutters. Two flower bed lights, outside ,pointed into our bed side window all night around the blind. Seating was very good, but on arrival the scary room thermostat was not explained to us and the room was cold. No inroom meal times/drink information. We requested more cloths hangers. Wi Fi a bit tricky throughout. Our fire place dark and empty, yet in the public rooms there are several good log fires. DOGS! barking inside and out, one morning a dog jumped at me as its owners opened their door!! I do not want dogs every where inside hotels when I stay. First night we ate in the Sunlaws main restaurant and heard they have two French cooks. We dined from the A La Carte menu and found all our dishes overcooked and disappointing. This was an expensive dinner. We then chose to eat in the compact, (once Snooker room, )"Bar 1745" (which could be called the libraty). Excellent burger. The hotel huilding is interesting even charming except for the unattractive reception area. But several rooms including the Conservatory were not in use. The vast new build of ?58 more rooms and Spa is near completion but a huge effort to staff and make it function will be required. At the moment with the exception of breakfast, we were very dissapointed by the most expensive Suite and hotel atmosphere.

Dear Peter, Thank you for your detailed review. I am saddened to hear that you found your overall experience at SCHLOSS Roxburghe disappointing. It is a shame that I didn’t have the opportunity to speak with you in person to discuss the issues you experienced and am surprised that you chose not to highlight these with our reception team on departure. I wasn’t based in the hotel the weekend you stayed with us however there is always a manager or supervisor available to meet and speak with guests in person should any issues arise. I have taken note of your comments and shared with our department managers for them to follow up. Thank you once again for sharing your feedback with us and we hope to welcome you back to SCHLOSS Roxburghe in the future. Kind regards, Dominique Beer, Hotel Manager

We stayed here as a couple for my partners' 50th birthday, which was on the day we arrived for a 2 night stay. The hotel went out of their way to add additional touches which made the stay special for my partner. It started with such a lovely welcome from Nicola in the front of house, who checked us in and shown us to our room where birthday flowers and chocolates were waiting. The Junior suite we were allocated was amazing, luxurious and meticulously clean. We took dinner in the restaurant and the staff all seemed to know we were celebrating a 50th. The food was the best I have had in a long while and we finished the night with a Drambuie and game of Backgammon in the cosy bar next to the log fire. The Full Scottish breakfast was delicious and something I looked forward to each morning. Every single member of staff was polite and helpful and always engaged in a conversation. The hotel and grounds are stunning and within easy reach of the picturesque town of Kelso and Floors Castle. The hotel and staff played their part in making this such a memorable birthday celebration. I have travelled to many places internationally but haven't experienced such a level of first class service, such as this. Take a bow Schloss Roxburghe Hotel, you operate a world class service and I am sure we will be back to see you again!

My husband and I stayed 5th and 6th November. From the warm welcome outside the front door when we arrived in the dark, to the departure on Sunday morning, everyone was attentive. The whole hotel is immaculately presented, the range of Molton Brown toiletries in the room immense. We ate in the dining room each night from the a la carte menu and also had a steak from the bar menu, all perfectly cooked and presented. We will certainly return and have recommended it to friends and family.

We recently stayed for a last minute break away mid week. It was superb. We had our puppy with us and the staff were all exceptional with her, a true dog friendly hotel, with even home baked dog biscuits brought to her at dinner time! Our courtyard room was lovely, comfortable, warm, great shower. Food was excellent, in particular the scallops were possibly the best we’ve tasted. Lovely golf course. A real find in terms of hotels offering great service. And if you have a dog, definitely add it to your list!!
