Stayed for one night on business in a courtyard double room. The arrival - lovely. Welcomed to the hotel like an old friend. Quick guided tour by John and into my room. Whilst pretty compact, it was such a cosy room. Warm, well presented and very comfortable. Went to the gym for a run - super clean and well equipped space. Once showered, into the pool (outdoor heated pool might I add !) which is just off what is a luxurious relaxation area. Dinner in the bar with a nice pint. Soup was amazing……fish and chips not quite so. Fish was quite tasteless but I was happy enough to eat it all. Slept like a log. Breakfast - full Scottish. Very tasty and, for all the right reasons, not massive portions. A naughty start to a day…….but not too naughty !. Departure was, again, very pleasant. A nice balance from all the staff of great service without being over-familiar. Very simple summary. It’s not would I return….it’s when can I return. Mrs Smith would love the spa !!.…
We spent four nights here for our wedding anniversary and genuinely had a fabulous time. The weather made it even more special, as the snow stayed on the ground for our entire stay! The newly opened spa is amazing. I had a one-hour Hot Stone Massage, and the treatment rooms are spacious and tranquil. Even the waiting areas are decorated to a high spec. The Relaxation Area is just stunning. Loads of space, tons of loungers (some double beds), another log fire, sparkling water tap (the BEST!). The steps down to the pool then take you through the sliding doors into the outdoor pool, and the water was lovely and warm. We managed to run from pool to sauna and felt quite Scandinavian! Really stunning views from the pool, and a decent length for a proper swim if you are inclined, but only if not too many others are in. We didn’t use the hot tub as it was frozen over. Lots of kit in the gym, although it could’ve been bigger for the number of rooms they now have. Nice to see a rowing machine, and everything was connectable to your phone (the kit is TechnoGym). Loads of colourful yoga mats, too. All the staff were attentive, and anything we needed was actioned without fuss. Even down to relighting one of the log fires when we returned late from Kelso one night. Lots of places to sit and enjoy the warmth of the fire while reading a good book. Really great food in the new Charlie’s restaurant and we had the option of choosing from their other (bar?) menu as well. Breakfast was plentiful. Lots of yoghurt, fruit and 6 different types of seeds for sprinkling. Omelettes were fluffy and well-filled. They got me gluten free sausage when I asked for it for the following morning and the plates were always HOT, which is a big thing for me. Lots of other food to choose from, too. Charlie’s is a big space, so there was plenty of room between the tables. Prices are on the higher side, I’d say. We were sad that Sunlaws was temporarily closed as we loved the intimate atmosphere when we dined there last year. Nice to see lots of golfing buddies coming in with their dogs. We walked into Kelso twice, and it’s a pretty walk along the old path, away from the main road, and you get gorgeous views over the River Tweed, Floors Castle and past MaisonDieu. They gave us a good suggestion for walks and looks like you can take a turn around the grounds, too. Less than £9 taxi ride back from Kelso. We had a bedroom in the Manor House, and it was very comfortable. Huge bed and really comfy mattress. The shower was superb – masses of hot water instantly and great water pressure. Plenty of wardrobe space, if needed, although a few more hangers would’ve been good. Turn down service and housekeeping were spot-on. Overall, a wonderful stay. I don’t think I had any major concerns about anything. They really looked after us well and we are definitely going to go back.…
Much anticipated visit for afternoon tea.Beautiful hotel tea served in a lovely drawing room.Unfortunately for the standard of hotel the Schloss. is reputed to be the afternoon tea fell short of the mark.Bog standard sandwich cakes were just sweet with not much defintion savouries can’t remember what they were that says it all!
1st class hotel and golf course superb spa facilities , welcoming knowledgeable helpful staff, fantastic bar and restaurant, this place has everything you need for some time away. from the moment we arrived everything could not have been better. A very special place
Stayed for one night en route elsewhere. Young, friendly, professional team. Rooms comfortable, good restaurant (dogs welcome). Would stay again when Spa opens. A few teething problems but these were dealt with eloquently and quickly.
We decided to go to Schloss for the weekend to celebrate my wife's retirement. We knew that the first weekend in January would be quiet and we could have some peace! We found that peace and quiet we wanted. A lovely hotel in the Borders, we enjoyed our walk from the hotel into Kelso, and the next day our drive up to the North Berwickshire coast. The hotel was great, with fantastic attention to detail, clean and considering this was a wet January weekend, very warm. We ate in the bar and dined on burgers or fish and chips, but they were beautifully prepared. Personally, I would have enjoyed a pint of Draught beer. But none was available!?!?! (does the hotel have periods when it runs out of wine or whisky?) Our room was great, again, warm and with evening turndown. It had everything we needed. We did have a couple of minor issues, but Ben (and I'm sorry I can't remember the name) resolved them quickly and easily. ( For that, we give you 12 / 10!!!! and you know why) The highlight of the weekend must have been the heated outdoor pool, swimming in the rain but at the same time being able to look at the moon and stars! All in all a really nice weekend, and one we'd like to repeat.…
We had 3 nights at the hotel and loved every minute. The staff were superb with Amy on the front desk kindly sorting out the odd problem in a charming and polite way. All the staff were good from the lovely cleaners to the attentive, entertaining waiter Max in the main restaurant. We played some golf and the course was great and really challenging. The Spa has been beautifully created blending modern buildings with a historic house. The grounds and setting of the hotel is simply stunning. It’s the most relaxed and safe dog hotel of all time and we loved how well behaved and respectful the customers and the staff were. We will definitely be back when we are in that part of the world.
Didn’t stay but had lunch at Charlie’s. Fine dining prices but mediocre at best and one dish (risotto) so bad it was inedible. ‘Risotto’ had 8 or 9 glutinous, congealed rice clumps about the size of quail’s eggs within it. Immediately removed by waiters and told it wouldn’t be charged for - it was (had to remind them to remove, embarrassing). Chocolate tart soggy bottom which was unpleasant and couldn’t be eaten, pear heart (£13) consisted of a pear cut in half, one small ice cream ball and a sea of salted caramel sauce with an addition jug of same - no idea where the heart was! Won’t be returning unless there is a change of chef. It’s such a shame because the hotel is luxurious and front of house staff pleasant.
Booked High Tea for a birthday treat. At reception we were handed onto John who led us through to the lounge area. During this he was very friendly and gave us a quick tour of the new bistro extension next door to the lounge. The hotel has been renovated and upgraded in recent years and the public areas are modern but in keeping with the buildings history. Food and service from the young staff were excellent and they were not rushing you to leave. A very relaxing experience. Afterwards we made our way to the new spa area, although John had earlier offered to escort us. There we met James and his staff who gave us the guided tour. We must say the spa looks stunning and will be a must for visitors and locals alike. All in all a great day at fabulous ans and friendly luxury retreat hotel.…
Disappointed experience, Quite pricey and Staff poorly trained. We live locally and not been to the hotel for a while, having visited when it was owned by the Roxburgh Estate and also been for an afternoon tea pre COVID. We like to go out on Christmas Eve lunch to start the festivities off . Due to the lack of local restaurants where we live we divided to try Schloss as it is 10 minutes down the road. Booked Charlie’s Restaurant for 2pm and we were one of 3 tables occupied in the whole ,quite large restaurant. Staff were polite and well dressed but lacked personality and didn’t seemed interested in their customers. No engagement with us or offer advice on menu. We were given 2 menus to choose from, an a la crate and a snack bar menus, both quite pricey and when it came to the drink order we had to ask for the wine list, which I think should have been offered when they brought the menus. Food on the whole was fine, we had a mix of starters and main courses from the 2 menus. Waited a while for our starters which they did apologise for but we found strange as there were only 10 of us in the whole restaurant at the time. A La crate food was as expected small portions , where as the food off the bar menu was more substantial. They seemed over staffed , with many of them wandering , folding napkins and chatting with each other. On the whole quite pricey for a visit so be prepared , if you were to go for a couple of burgers or fish and chips and maybe share a bottle of wine you wouldn’t be leaving with much change from £80. We would normally have gone to The Caddyman just down the road at Mounthooly but they were booked up, so will be better prepared next year 😆. I am sure they attract many customers who chose to stay in the hotel and obviously the golf course is busy but there’s certainly no interest in welcoming the local people by offering a less expensive and value for money menu.…
