Came expecting so much, drove in and saw this beautiful and majestic Schloss so impressive until you walk in, everything goes down hill, the service is shabby inattentive snobbish (with no reason at all), the Italian restaurant with a nice outside terrace overlong a car park is medicate at best, the food is ok the service is so so slow and inattentive though the waiters are nice just out of their depth. Worth a drive to see the Schloss but don’t bother with anything else, needs a lot of love, care and attention.
While visiting relatives in Cologne over Christmas, we indulged in a 4 days' stay at Schloss Benberg and it was indeed a very good alternative to escape the hustle and bustle of downtown Cologne. Located in a small sleepy town of Bensberg, this majestic hotel perched proudly on a higher ground, making it hard to miss if you're driving around the area. The massive courtyard leading to the entrance is the best first impression for anyone first timer to the hotel. Concierge and valet team were attentive to our arrival, suitcases promptly removed from the car and we were whisked to the reception for our check in. Unfortunately, our room was not ready but we couldn't really fault the hotel as it was only 1pm when we arrived. The lobby was so crowded that we immediately knew the hotel was almost fully booked. Surprisingly, many people thought the same as us, a little pampering at Schloss Benberg wouldn't hurt! Our room was ready by 2pm and we were escorted to a spacious Grand Suite, an upgrade from the Grand Deluxe Room which we booked earlier. We are members of LHW Leader's Club, hence the upgrade and nice welcome treats of a bottle of wine and some sweets for our little boy. The room was well lit with very high ceiling, spacious with a walk-in wardrobe and it has views of the entrance's courtyard and the neighbouring houses. During the busy time of Advent, some of our housekeeping requests such as a kettle to warm milk for our son and a child's bathrobe for spa usage required a long wait, but we totally understand the constraints of manpower shortage during this time and the staff attended to our requests were polite and accommodating. My wife had forgotten her swim wear and all shops in the area were closed during the Christmas period. She wears extra small size and unfortunately the shop in the hotel does not stock up small sizes for swim wear. The spa attendant so graciously offered some extra small swim wear which were left behind by other guests but laundered and in good condition, on loan throughout our stay. To us, that's a hospitality gesture which has gone above and beyond our expectations. Indoor pool however is a little smaller than expected and the water was too cold during the time of our visit. We also made a 5 and 6-course lunch reservation at Vendome, an experience one shouldn't miss when visiting Schloss Bensberg. We usually go on starred restaurants hunting during our vacations and dining at Vendome was really the highlight of our stay. To us, the food presentation at Vendome was an art, consumable masterpieces to soothe our palates! We were sceptical at first because our impatient 6-year old would not sit through a long lunch with us. Also, being a very picky eater, a set menu would not cater to his liking. The hotel gladly gave us some options of children's dishes and we ordered a very nice tomato-based pasta for our son. After finishing his pasta, he was quickly whisked to the temporary (we believe it's only seasonal) kids' club which was set up in the hotel's library. We were informed that during the 3 days of Advent celebration, the hotel organises supervised kids' programs for the little Schloss Geister. This was the perfect arrangement for us as the adults managed to indulged in a long 5-hour lunch at Vendome while the child was entertained by the hotel's capable team. There is not much to do outside of Schloss Bensberg but if you require a bank, pharmacy, medical help, a DM, toyshop, novelty shops and a Rewe supermarket, you only need to walk 5mins downhill to the nearest high street. To us, our stay at Schloss Bensberg was the best way to celebrate a quiet, relaxing family Christmas and this could be our tradition from now on whenever we need to visit our family in Cologne.…
We stayed here for SEVEN nights. Pros Beautiful Castle and grounds Room small yet tasteful decor 3* Michelin Restaurant is excellent Staff speak German and English Valet parking with attentive bellmen Conveniently located to explore Cologne, Essen, Bonn, Koblenz, and Dusseldorf Cons For a five star facility at this price point, service was lacking By way of example we ordered room service twice and each time it took over 1h30min to receive the meal. On one occasion the order was incorrect. Management made no effort to rectify the matter despite phone calls. They were dismissive. Room Service menu severely lacking. I would recommend eating out or take away from a restaurant. I would generally advise against staying at the Schloss but would recommend the Restaurant Vendome.
This hotel has earned its 'certificate of excellence.' A lot of times these older palace/estate hotels are in need of repair but this was in perfect condition and everything you would want or expect. Breakfast was also a dream.
Stayed for two nights. If arriving by car you can enter carpark on left hand side of the complex (looking from the front) or just bring it into front entrance. Breakfast excellent with wide range of choices. Had dinner at Trattoria Enoteca which was OK. Also you can have a drink - and food at the Salvadore Dali bar. Good pool and sauna facilities. Easy access to Cologne by car. Staff all very helpful and speak good English.
