Travelers' Choice
In a truly fantastic location, high above the Cologne lowlands and with a wonderful view of Cologne cathedral, one of the largest baroque palaces in Europe awaits you. It is the spirit of history that fills and enchants the 5 star Althoff Grandhotel Schloss Bensberg. The multitude of details from times long gone still tell tales of unique people and moments that characterise this building so much: Goethe and Beethoven, as well as Napoleon and the Medici family resided here. But today you can enjoy stylish luxury in the magnificent, historic chambers and in unmistakable Althoff ambience. Supplemented by personal service, Joachim Wissler's 3-star cuisine in the gourmet restaurant Vendome and a Beauty & Leading Spa that satisfies even the highest demands.

This is an amazing hotel. A fine emblem of Rhine Valley hospitality, combining warmth and efficiency with ease. Our room was spacious, the food we were served was good, and the service was really thoughtful. A true 5-star experience.

We did stay for 3 nights on St. Valentine's Day! We arrived to the hotel by car and despite it was late in the evening check-in was smooth and quick. We stayed at Grand Deluxe room - it was quite big room with high ceilings well-maintained, with comfortable king bed and spotlessly clean. We did have view towards city with Cologne cathedral visible at the far back :) Bathroom was quite big in size with all modern amenities you would expect from 5-star hotel. Wi-Fi both in the room and at hotel grounds was of good quality, Being LHW members we received welcome message from the hotel manager along with complimentary bottle of red wine. We did have breakfast on all 3 days and it was perfect - excellent food selection including cooked to order hot dishes included in the price, variety of cold (including several freshly squeezed juices) and hot drinks, vast fruit selection including fresh strawberries (on my request they also prepared whipped cream) and other berries. All this coupled with excellent service and classic ambiance of the area made the breakfast simply exceptional. Hotel interiors were very clean and well-kept, they do have several spacious lounge areas as well as few restaurants on-site (which we unfortunately did not have opportunity to try), bar is also very atmospheric, and drinks are of very good quality. Spa/recreation area on-site is also very nice with 12m indoor pool, sauna/steam bath etc. They are also complimentary offering different herbal teas and infusions by Ronnefeldt in spa area - very nice addition. During summertime they also have nice lounges outside for sunbathing right near the pool area. Hotel is in small town, honestly without car it is not very easily accessible, however with car is only 20 min from Cologne and 30 min from Bonn - so quite convenient location. One point of criticism - hotel as any good 5-star hotel has valet parking - saying this it is in fact the only option available to park the car, being in quite secluded area and having huge garage I don't believe it is appropriate for the hotel of such caliber to charge additionally for parking - which they do and the charge is quite substantial (28 Euro per day). Other than this it was really excellent and very relaxing stay - we can highly recommend the hotel to all those seeking peaceful and luxurious holiday in classic setting.

Came expecting so much, drove in and saw this beautiful and majestic Schloss so impressive until you walk in, everything goes down hill, the service is shabby inattentive snobbish (with no reason at all), the Italian restaurant with a nice outside terrace overlong a car park is medicate at best, the food is ok the service is so so slow and inattentive though the waiters are nice just out of their depth. Worth a drive to see the Schloss but don’t bother with anything else, needs a lot of love, care and attention.

While visiting relatives in Cologne over Christmas, we indulged in a 4 days' stay at Schloss Benberg and it was indeed a very good alternative to escape the hustle and bustle of downtown Cologne. Located in a small sleepy town of Bensberg, this majestic hotel perched proudly on a higher ground, making it hard to miss if you're driving around the area. The massive courtyard leading to the entrance is the best first impression for anyone first timer to the hotel. Concierge and valet team were attentive to our arrival, suitcases promptly removed from the car and we were whisked to the reception for our check in. Unfortunately, our room was not ready but we couldn't really fault the hotel as it was only 1pm when we arrived. The lobby was so crowded that we immediately knew the hotel was almost fully booked. Surprisingly, many people thought the same as us, a little pampering at Schloss Benberg wouldn't hurt! Our room was ready by 2pm and we were escorted to a spacious Grand Suite, an upgrade from the Grand Deluxe Room which we booked earlier. We are members of LHW Leader's Club, hence the upgrade and nice welcome treats of a bottle of wine and some sweets for our little boy. The room was well lit with very high ceiling, spacious with a walk-in wardrobe and it has views of the entrance's courtyard and the neighbouring houses. During the busy time of Advent, some of our housekeeping requests such as a kettle to warm milk for our son and a child's bathrobe for spa usage required a long wait, but we totally understand the constraints of manpower shortage during this time and the staff attended to our requests were polite and accommodating. My wife had forgotten her swim wear and all shops in the area were closed during the Christmas period. She wears extra small size and unfortunately the shop in the hotel does not stock up small sizes for swim wear. The spa attendant so graciously offered some extra small swim wear which were left behind by other guests but laundered and in good condition, on loan throughout our stay. To us, that's a hospitality gesture which has gone above and beyond our expectations. Indoor pool however is a little smaller than expected and the water was too cold during the time of our visit. We also made a 5 and 6-course lunch reservation at Vendome, an experience one shouldn't miss when visiting Schloss Bensberg. We usually go on starred restaurants hunting during our vacations and dining at Vendome was really the highlight of our stay. To us, the food presentation at Vendome was an art, consumable masterpieces to soothe our palates! We were sceptical at first because our impatient 6-year old would not sit through a long lunch with us. Also, being a very picky eater, a set menu would not cater to his liking. The hotel gladly gave us some options of children's dishes and we ordered a very nice tomato-based pasta for our son. After finishing his pasta, he was quickly whisked to the temporary (we believe it's only seasonal) kids' club which was set up in the hotel's library. We were informed that during the 3 days of Advent celebration, the hotel organises supervised kids' programs for the little Schloss Geister. This was the perfect arrangement for us as the adults managed to indulged in a long 5-hour lunch at Vendome while the child was entertained by the hotel's capable team. There is not much to do outside of Schloss Bensberg but if you require a bank, pharmacy, medical help, a DM, toyshop, novelty shops and a Rewe supermarket, you only need to walk 5mins downhill to the nearest high street. To us, our stay at Schloss Bensberg was the best way to celebrate a quiet, relaxing family Christmas and this could be our tradition from now on whenever we need to visit our family in Cologne.

We stayed here for SEVEN nights. Pros Beautiful Castle and grounds Room small yet tasteful decor 3* Michelin Restaurant is excellent Staff speak German and English Valet parking with attentive bellmen Conveniently located to explore Cologne, Essen, Bonn, Koblenz, and Dusseldorf Cons For a five star facility at this price point, service was lacking By way of example we ordered room service twice and each time it took over 1h30min to receive the meal. On one occasion the order was incorrect. Management made no effort to rectify the matter despite phone calls. They were dismissive. Room Service menu severely lacking. I would recommend eating out or take away from a restaurant. I would generally advise against staying at the Schloss but would recommend the Restaurant Vendome.

Dear 629raym, thank you for your review. We are very sorry that we were unable to meet your expectations. We discussed your comments on our Room Service Card with our chef and will be happy to take your suggestions into account. We also spoke to the responsible service manager that your meal was taking so long. Please be assured that this does not in any way correspond to the standard and quality thinking that otherwise prevails in our company. The entire team would be very happy if you would give us a second chance to convince you of the service that is otherwise prevalent in our company. In the meanwhile we remain with Kind regards Kurt Wagner General Manager
