My husband and I had a wonderful four day stay at Rio Manso in late December. The lodge was incredibly beautiful with amazing views from the room. The setting was extremely peaceful and quiet and I definitely would have liked to have stayed longer. What made this experience so incredible though was the staff. The host, Erika, was professional and kind and willing to go out of her way to make everyone comfortable. She arranged white water rafting for me as well as a birding excursion, and she took me herself on a hike to a nearby waterfall. The chef, Diego, made amazing meals for breakfast and dinner and packed extremely elegant picnics for lunch. The server, Eliana, was also always available to prepare whatever cocktail was requested. But perhaps one of the most unique and appealing aspects of this lodge is that several of the staff grew up in the National Park. Javier, the fishing guide, was awesome. He was extremely knowledgeable and funny. His nephew I think, Moncho, drove us to and from the lodge and told us all about the area. And of course, no lodge is complete without a dog. Suppa was always willing to take guests on a hike or show them around the land.

I have been to the Rio Manso Lodge 7 times already. Since my first visit I knew I was going to return every year and I keep fulfilling my wish each and every time. I have been to many fishing lodges in Argentina over the last 15 years but Rio Manso is special. Different from many places this one has originally been designed and built as a fishing lodge. Thus, rooms these in particular, common areas, spaces, amenities and all the facilities are perfectly arranged for the guests to have a great time. Solid infrastructure. Excellent service. Lovely view of Mount Tronador (also from the rooms), lake Hess and several other landscapes. The fishing is great with several different locations where the anglers can fish with all techniques in the various lakes and rivers. Excellent guides, all locals and as they have been with the lodge since the beginning have great knowledge of each and every site. This guarantees the angler the best conditions to catch fish. The environment is outstanding. You end up fishing in places with astonishing views while catching fish too. Last two times there I went with my wife and she learnt how to fish thanks to Marcelo, one of the guides. I keep going and come back with the feeling that it felt like home. Keeping my promise I know we will be there next season.

An Orvis - endorsed fly fishing lodge in Northern Patagonia, near the Chilean border, within easy access of the city of Bariloche. Spectacular on all counts. I would highlight the professional, warm and welcoming resort manager and staff, a top notch chef with creative presentations that will rival any Michelin star restaurant, and combination of lake and stream fishing experience for rainbow, brown, and brook trout in the 16-24 inch category - big, beautiful, healthy, and plentiful. Other options for days off or non-fisherpeople would be horseback riding, hiking, waterfalls, a glacier (Mount Tranoador and Black Glacier), and probably anything you ask the wonderful host manager Mariana to arrange. Sauna on site. Massages available. Rustic, remote, but very nice and comfortable.

My son and I just got back from a week long fly fishing trip to the Rio Manso Lodge through Orvis Travel. We arranged our own plane travel--Aerolineas Argentina, which was great. They provided a shuttle from the International Airport EZE to the Domestic Airport--a 1hr 30min bus ride. The flight overnite to Buenos Aires was 9hrs, immigration check was thorough. When checking into the domestic flight we learned their baggage weight considerably lower than international weight and even US weight limits...cost for overage reasonable 60pesos or about $6-7.50. Upon arrival in San Carlos Bariloche airport we were met by Javier our principle guide for the week. Javier was terrific. The ride to the lodge is 1hr 30min and the last 40min is BRUTAL....the road is unpaved and basically a rock road..they do not need a grader, but a rock crusher. The road is all under the control of the National Park where the lodge is located, and it does not appear as though the National Park people are doing anything to capitalize on their beautiful environment...the scenery is spectacular...but Oh the roads, twist, bend, bounce, corkscrew--be sure to wear your seatbelt...if you have any difficulty with motion sickness this is not where you want to be, unless you have the Relief Band or medicine.
The Lodge is beautiful, but not fancy. It is absolutely immaculately clean as were the rooms, beds, baths (all en suite). I believe there is a change of linens daily, but would not swear to it. The lodge is isolated and uses a generator about 8hrs a day and the rest of the time the power comes from a bank of batteries. They have WiFi, but it is very spotty, and most found you cannot do much except email and texting--some..no surfing, pictures, etc. Not reliable enough if you have something important to do.
The Lodge does not have any incidentals for sale, so if you think you are going to need it, bring it! They allowed us to use their sunblock, as the one we had was outdated and used up. They also allowed us to use their lotion. If you need toothpaste, shave cream, or bandaids, you will be out of luck. The same goes for any fly fishing equipment, except for flies you can purchase. They do have waders, boots and fishing equipment you can rent, but I believe that is limited too.
The typical day is breakfast 8-8:15 and off to fishing about 9 and return from fishing around 6-6:30pm....unless you come in early and then you can go out again until about 9pm to fish on Lago Hess which is right out the lodge's front door. Javier took us upon arrival and we fished until 9 which is when dinner is typically served. They have cocktails and appetizers around 7 to 9. Nothing fancy, but always tasty, and that is the same for dinner. This is not gourmet food. They bake their own bread. Our meals were variety of meat platter (beef ribs, lamb, two types sausage) the first nite, served along with a first course salad and then homemade desserts. The salads and desserts were different each nite as was the main course, we had lamb roast, chicken curry over rice, chop souey, filet mignon (this was OUTSTANDING--STEAKS WERE at least 1# each and cooked PERFECTLY), salmon, and I seem to recall a bar b que of some sort. All meals were served with overflowing wine--usually Navarro Correa Malbec. There is an open bar all day with all sort of liquor, beer and wine available, which is included.
For lunch we usually ate shoreside, and it was always a variation, but always tasty and wine, beer, soft drinks or water along with. The wine always good quality and usually the Navarro Correa. The day before we left the weather was too raunchy to fish in the pm and we came in around 1. The lunch for the day was homemade Chicken Pot Pie---absolutely delicious!
Breakfast was platter of cheese and ham, variety of fresh fruits (melon, pears, apples, etc), home baked bread, and eggs to order as well as omelets. Of course fresh squeezed OJ and coffee.
One evening prior to dinner there was a wine tasting which was done by distributor for Navarro Correa, and he brought 3 really delicious wines. The usual malbec, but he had their Cab (which is not at all like US cabs--more like US merlots--but very good) and lastly a blended red - Structura which was terrific. I will be looking for these wines in the US, not at Costco, so will have to try Total Wine or speciality wine shops...
Other than the wine tasting there is no other entertainment as such, which one really does not expect...the wine tasting was a treat. There is no TV, etc. Just a great place to read, bring your own as there is a limit of older magazines and some books ,and relax and really get away from it all. If you want to go into Bariloche and learn of the rumors and history as well as good shopping it is there. For us, we remained totally at the Lodge and fished all 7days prior to flying out. We moved our flight up from 5pm to 1pm as we were concerned about the ability of making the flight at 11:15pm to Miami.....Glad we did, what an adventure....the flight to Buenos Aires on time, actually early, and then it took us about 1 1/2hrs to finally get the shuttle to the International Airport and when we got there at 3pm, they have more security checks and going through immigration exactly like when entering the country, finally we got to the gate, after having 45mins to eat a dinner, at 8:15.....basically took 4 1/2hrs to check through for the flight not counting the shuttle over which was a 3hr adventure because of the schedule.....7 1/2hrs to get to where we could finally leave Argentina...unbelievable.... You guessed it---slept all the way to Miami - 9hrs from the take off to touch down.
If you like being totally isolated, without any real WiFi, TV, cell, newspapers, etc. and relaxing, then Rio Manso Lodge is the place.
Special people at the Lodge are the manager, Diana (super accommodating), Noie-manages the living room, bar and dining room, Diego head guide and our guide Javier, 1st assistant (terrific, knowledgeable local speaking beautiful English (learned it from the touristas). The owner Roberto was there for the last couple of days and very nice and friendly.
All in all -5 star it is not....3 star more like it and that is based upon what I believe separates the 4 & 5s from the 3s....

The road to the lodge is a dirt road in the wilds of Patagonia. One of the reasons the fishing is good, and the surrounding landscape is so pristine is because it is not that all that easy to get here. Although we and most of our guests like that, we do appreciate that for some guests, the journey can be a bit uncomfortable. However, the National Park Service that controls the area has full control over all roads in the park. While we one of the top fly fishing lodges in the world, and endorsed by Orvis, we are not a luxury hotel in an urban setting. I think this reviewer would agree that the experience and the staff once he arrived was excellent. Rio Manso Lodge is a wilderness lodge, and offers superb fly fishing, hiking, horseback riding, and more, in a wilderness setting. We feel strongly about giving our guests the best possible Patagonian experience.

we recently had 4 days fishing with friends at the lodge........good fishing, good guides, good walks, the staff were lovely, though we were surprised the owner did not spend more time there, we only met him briefly the first night, food very average, had to ask for the Argentinian meat experience for our friends to share.........which we had the last night and in abundance! would have been good to have that the previous nights too, not all on one night! Rooms good but perhaps needs a lift especially the bathrooms.

Roberto and his staff could not have been more accommodating and helpful in making our stay a wonderful experience. As a non-angler I enjoyed our week at Rio Manso as much as my husband enjoyed the fishing and overall experience. Not only is the lodge comfortable, but I was happy with the other non-fishing activities, which included bird watching, horse back riding, hiking, and simply curling up with a good book and enjoying the scenery. The kitchen staff worked extremely hard to come up with vegetarian dishes for myself and another party that traveled with us. They welcomed us, as all guests, to come into the kitchen and ask for whatever we desired. We were also fortunate to experience our week with a father/son group from the states that helped make our stay complete. Well worth the trip!

For wives who always stay behind when husbands go fishing, this is the place to go with them !!! It is a lovely lodge, very comfortable rooms, cozy, good food, incredible views, amazing hosts and....very patient guides. Yes I learnt how to fly fish and really enjoyed it. Have been there twice and expect he will take me again soon. If you don´t enjoy fishing you can go bird watching, nice hiking trails or relax at the lodge and admire the view.

I had the pleasure of being a guest at Rio Manso when my husband found this “great lodge” while visiting our daughter in Argentina. He could not wait to return to do some more fly-fishing. While I have never fly-fished before, I enjoy trying new things and love traveling. Well, no bites for me….. the guides tried and tried and tried. I was a bit disappointed, but I enjoyed the beautiful lodge and surrounding area and the food was delicious. The lodge owner brings in other experts/guides if you don’t want to fish. I was able to go out with a naturalist/world renowned bird expert to learn about the native plants, trees and wildlife. All of the staff and owner go out of their way to make sure that my every need was addressed. They even do your laundry for you. My husband has booked another group he wants to share this wonderful place with. I know I will return to continue my fly-fishing lessons.
