I feel like three stars out of five is a fair and perhaps even generous rating for our experience as there were three positive aspects with two big negatives. The good - The hotel exterior, lobby area and bar are really pretty. There's a lot of oak paneling and interesting features and it feels very up market as soon as you walk in the door. - We had a two course lunch included in our spa package which was a choice of starter followed by a posh sandwich. The food was tasty and the restaurant was nicely decorated. - We had a short 25min massage included in the package too and it was a lovely experience. The treatment area is separate to the main spa and the lady who did the treatment was lovely. The bad - Whilst the hotel itself looked lovely the spa was extremely run down, tired and cold. The main unique attraction of this particular spa is a heated indoor/outdoor pool which was closed the entire time. We were told this matter of factly with no offer of a partial refund. The two saunas were nice and hot which was good because the pool was also freezing. The experience showers were stone cold too and I had to try several different showers in the changing rooms to get a warm one. I'm not sure if their water heater is insufficient for winter or if it was having issues but I would have expected some offer of compensation for the reduced facilities on offer. Even a heartfelt apology and small gesture of a free soft drink with lunch would have shown good customer service but there was nothing. They also don't seem to have capitalised on closure times over lockdown to have had a deep clean as there were large yellow stains in the shower and the water fixtures and fittings in the main thermal suite had limescale build-up to the point where it was noticeable throughout. In short, the pool, jacuzzi, sauna and steam room at the Holiday Inn where we were staying were better. At £138pp for a half day experience I expected more. - The most shocking part of the experience was how bad the service from the spa receptionist was. The older blonde woman on duty (21/01) who gave us a tour was pleasant but the younger blonde woman behind the desk couldn't have cared less. She asked us for our details and then when a colleague asked her a question about the details we'd just given she responded "How should I know?". She told us we hadn't paid but when told her the date I paid over the phone and showed her my bank statement confirming the money had been taken she said, "Oh yeah your receipt's probably in the till" but made no effort to get it or check. So I guess on the plus side, if you do want to have a lacklustre spa experience for free, just walk in and if she's on duty you might get lucky.

When arriving to the hotel, we were greeted by a lovely staff member named Saule on reception! Due to us being early for our check in, our room was not ready for us. Instead of leaving and coming back, the receptionist suggested that we could use the changing rooms downstairs and that she could hold our bags for us until we returned in the evening. After returning, all was ready for us and we loved our stay from there on outwards. The staff were friendly, food was yummy, and we thoroughly enjoyed our quite stay! Recommended!

Stayed for 2 nights to celebrate husbands 75th birthday…our room was spacious, comfortable & clean…the only criticism would be that there was not enough lighting, particularly missing over the mirror…but this is only a minor niggle… Staff were lovely, particularly the 2 waiters, and the evening meal was great…the spa was a real treat & we loved sitting outside in the warm pool looking up at the stars! I had asked if we could have anything extra as it was a special birthday & we were treated to a bottle of Prosecco & a decorated dessert, which was a lovely touch! The hotel is near to Virginia Water & I would really recommend a walk around it if there is time during a stay… Overall we had a lovely time & would recommend it to anyone staying in the area

We stayed last weekend and the hotel and spa itself were great. Myself and partner left feeling totally relaxed. The spa was just what we needed. We also had dinner and breakfast which was lovely and enjoyed the cocktails too. However, the main disappointment was with the treatments. I had a facial and my nails polished and filed. After coming out the room into the daylight, I noticed how poor my nails were. My 6 month old son could have painted them better! When I got home I had to take the nail polish off. The polish had gone onto the skin on my fingers and just looked awful. The quality itself was overall poor and looked messy. We asked if there was any availability to have this corrected or for gel nails to be done but unfortunately there wasnt. Also the beautician only applied 1 coat of colour?! I dont see how this is normal and probably another reason why they looked so bad. May I suggest that nail treatments are done in a brighter, well lit room so that both the beautician and the customer can actually see how they look. Everything else was perfect but I suggest avoiding any nail treatments!

Hello JoF434, Thank you for takin g time out of your day to leave your candid feedback , I have note your good and not so good comments. I apologies for the poor manicure you received during your stay, certainly not indicative of what our beauticians normally do. I be more than happy if you would e-mail me with a telephone number and I will call you to chat further about your experience in our Spa. I am however pleased to read that you enjoyed the restaurant and bar during your stay. GM.Berystede@macdonald-hotels.co.uk Warm Regards Kyran
