We had a wonderful stay at Arcadia Lodge. Greg met us on arrival and took us through everything we needed to know. Both Peter and Greg are very knowledgable and made sure we made the most of our 4 days in Russell. The lodge is in a good location with superb views. Rooms are very comfortable and breakfast is lovely. We would definitely go back if we were in the area again.
We had a wonderful four nights at Arcadia. Greg and Peter were superb hosts, knowledgable, flexible, accommodating and really good company. The room was immaculate, the house beautiful and the breakfasts superb. From the moment we arrived we were made to feel welcome and relaxed. The honesty bar, the tea and coffee and the cookies were all welcomed. The view is excellent and it only takes ten minutes to walk into Russell. If we are ever lucky enough to be back in New Zealand we will not hesitate stay here again. Kia Kaha New Zealand, do not let the terrorists win, you are a kind, welcoming people in a safe and beautiful country.
Peter and Greg, the proprietors of Arcadia Lodge, have mastered the combination of providing top quality accommodation with laid back and yet attentive style. The moment we pulled into the parking lot we felt our shoulders drop into 'relax' mode as Greg welcomed us and began an orientation of the property, culminating at Arcadia Cottage, where we would spend the next week enjoying the jaw-dropping view in superb surroundings. The ambience in the main house is so welcoming that if there were several days of rain, one could still feel pretty relaxed sitting in the main parlour or stretching out on the sofa under a blanket and reading a book. The property is beautifully decorated and maintained: the kitchen is an exquisite homage to the historical provenance of the house, but with mod cons. The dining room is elegant yet cozy, with that spectacular bay view, though we were lucky enough with weather that we enjoyed our breakfasts on the adjoining patio. And what breakfasts!!! Peter is a very talented and innovative cook, so each morning was an absolute delight. The buffet of fresh fruit, cereals..all the 'usual' things is enhanced by the compotes Peter makes from fruit grown on the property, and I fell head-over-heels for the plum concoction. He also does fabulous sliced bananas rolled in a seed combination I wish I had thought to get the recipe for. Very refreshing. Then comes the hot breakfast and baked treat of the day, and what feasts we had! Enhanced with herbs and vegetables from their own garden, Peter found things do with eggs that French chefs could learn from! Greg serves the meal while also checking to see who needs some help planning their day and offering to make arrangements: their knowledge of local sights, tours, cafés and restaurants is extensive and utterly reliable, and we were grateful to have them organize our tickets for local attractions. Greg also makes jams and jellies from the abundance of fruit on the property, so take a tip from me, and save room for toast so that you can enjoy these delicious confiture. We stayed in the cottage attached to the main property, a charming two bedroom house the owners had occupied until recently, then renovated for guests. It is completely charming: fresh and stylish, cozy and cool, the kitchen (which we never used!) is beautifully appointed, so preparing one's lunch or dinner, then taking it out to the terrace to enjoy the view and the gardens would turn the most humble plate into a five star experience. We were able to view some of the rooms in the main house, all decorated within a very tasteful aesthetic, all looked very inviting. I don't think there is a 'bad' room in the place. The bed was very comfortable and the sheets were of excellent quality. The entire property is neat and scrupulously clean and the grounds are equally elegant and well cared for. The property is well located, with the main part of town a short and pleasant walk: there you will find a number of cafés, restaurants and bars as well as the food passenger ferry to Waitangi. These two are superb hosts who care deeply about providing their guests with a good experience, and if you are contemplating a visit to The Bay of Islands, you would be well advised to spend some time with them at their beloved Arcadia Lodge. We hated to leave, and now, a couple of months later, we look back on that week as one of the best travel experiences we have had.…
This property has a wonderful charm, classic and tastefully dressed, all the rooms are beautiful, the bed in the Ranguinui room was really comfy. The house holds a great story and history to it, which Greg explains with enthusiasm and his local knowledge is so informative, really helps you to hit the ground running to make the most of your visit, the food was top notch! Peter's cooking is fabulous. Russell is a magical place to visit. Peter and Greg are fabulous hosts.
We stayed here for three nights and would thoroughly recommend it. Peter and Greg are perfect hosts and make you feel like very welcome and valued guests in their home. The food they serve at breakfast is some of the best we’ve experienced in New Zealand and the views from the deck are beautiful. The location is brilliant and we loved every minute at Arcadia Lodge and Russell. Thank you Peter and Greg
