Nice chilled out hostel; rooms, kitchen, and lounge were clean, shower was excellent. Cool supervisor, he really makes you feel at home. One minor drawback, there was almost never enough space in the fridges.

We were slightly anxious about arriving at the bug back packers as we are in our sixties but we needn’t have worried at all. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful and the studio was the best space we’ve had in New Zealand so far! It’s enormous and amazing value. We would both thoroughly recommend this place to all ages. We actually enjoyed the walk into town. Thank you very much to the team. Simon and Sue Lindsey Clark

We had a great stay at The Bug. It delivered just what the other reviews said it would :) Well run, spotless and we were very impressed with size of double ensuite - get that if you can!! Good hot cross buns for breakfast as well and an easy stroll into town.

Had a wonderful stay at the Bug. The welcome was great and the accommodation was spotlessly clean. Had the best nights sleep. The amenities were great and I would highly recommend it. The town was easily accessible for food or you can cook in the kitchen at the Bug. Thank you for a wonderful stay.

The place only makes sense if you have a car, once it’s not so close to the city. I stayed in a 8 beds mixed dorm, which was absolutely not bad, once the beds were very very stable and I couldn’t even feel the other guest moving on the top bunker bed. That’s pretty good and it helps to have a good sleep! I was really unsure about the safety of the place when I checked in, because the rooms are always opened, and besides we slept with the sliding door to the road opened, I still felt pretty safer in there, other than in other hostels I’ve stayed in NZ. Ps.: I would choose less beds dorm next time!

Hi Nina, Thanks for staying with us, pointing out our good points and your honest review. We don't advertise ourselves as a city backpackers and like this act very much. We are in a quiet residential neighbourhood with a park, school ground and campground as neighbours so its a good area. We are 2kms from the actual inner city which is not far and we do have bikes for rent for a nominal fee. Otherwise its a 20min walk on a nice wide path. With shared rooms/dorms, its over to the guests to ensure their own safety with closing and locking doors. SO im glad you felt safe, but it is also your option to close and lock the door to be safer. There are 2 Windows in that room for ventilation and between the room and the road, is a courtyard, fence with gate and a carpark which also has security camera monitoring. Im glad the beds were comfortable for you and you enjoyed your stay. Thanks again, safe travels, The bug team.
