My wife and stayed with the hosts James and James to celebrate our wedding anniversary. It was a very memorable night. We dinned in absolute opulence with an exceptional menu that James had made. James makes many of his own products and he joined us for a lovely conversation in the drawing room after dinner. The rooms are immaculately presented...

This place is unbelievably quaint and charming. What a unique property which is well maintained and beautiful. James and James were amazing hosts. We enjoyed the billiards room when we arrived a bit late due to driving all day. At breakfast we enjoyed homemade everything. Literally they make everything themselves from the jams to the yogurt. One of our group...

Thank you for your review! We are so sorry that you were only able to spend one night with us, but perhaps one day your travels will bring you back to New Zealand and we can look forward to your return! Thank you very much for your thoughtful and kind review! We are very happy that you enjoyed your stay so much, and that you liked the Spanish-style eggs that we made for one of your breakfasts--they are a new thing for us, and you were the first guest to have them! We hope your travels from Oamaru were enjoyable, and...

This place is beyond excellent. It is simply, the standard all others should aspire to. James B and James G are wonderful hosts. Their food is stupendous, almost all of it homemade. Their home is a beatifully clean, spacious and comfortable house filled with a collection of items accrued from their travels. If you come to New Zealand spend at...

This beautiful and beautifully-restored 'arts and craft' style house is complete with period furniture and a magnificent garden. It stands on the edge of the surprising and elegant little town of Oamaru which boasts many fine buildings including an opera house. Our hosts, James and James have travelled the world and settled on this particular piece of paradise. One leads...

Thank you both for your thoughtful review! When we purchased the lodge in 2010, we certainly were concerned that it always retain its historicity while still being firmly footed in the modern day, so while we do have a lot of antiques, we also have all the modern conveniences that today's travellers expect. We're very glad that this has worked...

Pen-y-bryn is a must if you are anywhere near Omaru! James and James are amazing hosts, even preparing a delicious spur of the moment dinner for us. Their helpfulness directing us to the Yellow-Eyed Penguin colony at Katiki Point was greatly appreciated. And, they are wonderful conversationalists about their exotic travels, even sharing their personal travel books with us.

The lovely old mansion is superb and the eclectic and stylish interior very much in keeping with the rich history of this property. James and James are rightly proud of their achievement in revitalising this grande old dame which presents as one of the best properties we have visited. Thank you for your lovely comments about your stay with us! We are very happy that you enjoyed your visit, and that our approach toward renovating the lodge resonated with you! Pen-y-bryn is a true lodge, not simply a bed and breakfast, with it's feeling of being invited into the owners' home. All the public rooms were superbly maintained with the quality Victorian workmanship and materials to be seen...
