Oamaru is the ideal stop between Christchurch and Queenstown. The Pen y Bryn Lodge is a gorgeous, restored 1889 historic home with beautiful wood paneled public rooms and formal gardens. Each bedroom has been designed for comfort with style. Your hosts, James and James, are charming and very knowledgeable about the local area. Their suggestions - Blue penguin sanctuary, Whitestone... Pen-y-bryn is a must if you are anywhere near Omaru! James and James are amazing hosts, even preparing a delicious spur of the moment dinner for us. Their helpfulness directing us to the Yellow-Eyed Penguin colony at Katiki Point was greatly appreciated. And, they are wonderful conversationalists about their exotic travels, even sharing their personal travel books with us.

Thank you so much for your review! The lovely old mansion is superb and the eclectic and stylish interior very much in keeping with the rich history of this property. James and James are rightly proud of their achievement in revitalising this grande old dame which presents as one of the best properties we have visited. The suites out back are beautiful, recycled Oamauru stone used throughout... More

Thank you for your lovely comments about your stay with us! We are very happy that you enjoyed your visit, and that our approach toward renovating the lodge resonated with you! The Oamaru stone in the Annex building (where the Nest, Garden and Park Rooms are located) is actually the original stone, just turned "inside-out" when the building was rebuilt... More

We stayed 2 nights to celebrate our anniversary. We took the option for James to cook up our dinner, and mentioned our wedding had a Victorian era theme. James researched the period and produced a truly memorable meal. The most beautiful part was the first 2 causes were the same as our wedding dinner. Can't thank the James's enough for... More

Thank you for your review of your stay with us! I wish I could say that I had done meticulous research to be sure to offer you a reminder of your wedding dinner, but in fact it was just an incredible coincidence that those first courses were the same! Regardless, thank you for choosing to spend your anniversary with us,... More

Pen-y-bryn is a true lodge, not simply a bed and breakfast, with it's feeling of being invited into the owners' home. Our room (the 'Garden Room;) was large, clean and comfortable with high-quality internet, a comfortable super-king bed and a huge, modern bathroom. All the public rooms were superbly maintained with the quality Victorian workmanship and materials to be seen... More

We spent one night here - it is a lodge in one of the early historic homes on a hill with beautiful gardens. We stayed in a room in the annex at the back - the room was very large and comfortable. The attention to detail is most impressive - lovely bed linens, home made cookies and a great range... More

Beautiful Pen-y-bryn with stories to tell in every room of this lovely old mansion. Gracious living is not a thing of the past, James and James have retained all the love and care with a quiet sensitivity that places you in the centre of their world. Very mixed feelings on this one. If the room cost $200 or $300 per night I'd say it was great but for almost $900 per night I cannot justify it. Lovely old heritage house, long walk to centre of town (but walkable) in pretty neighborhood. Sophisticated hosts from New York City. Thoughtful if rather uptight service; great food (breakfast included,... More

We had a great time to Pen-y-bryn with James and James. They were both sensitive and helpful hosts who obviously wanted us to have the best possible experience. We appreciated that, and had a wonderful time while staying there. I would highly recommend this lodging. Thank you to James and James for making our stay really comfortable and enjoyable.
