A group of 5 uof us stayed two nights at this lovely little hostel, and enjoyed every moment. The owners are so very kind, generous, and welcoming. The facilities were spotless and the atmosphere was very laid back and artistic. The views of the sea from the dining area was unreal, and the outdoor garden/bbq area was the perfect place to wind down after a day at the beach. We will recommend this hostel to anyone going through hokitika, it's the perfect home away from home.
We are 62 & 63 years old, looking for good value accommodation whilst traveling and skeptical of hostels as a place for us. However, Birdsong is wonderful! We were able to book a private room (shared bathroom) with ocean view, The room, common area, and bathroom was spotless. The common kitchen has everything you need from dishes, cutlery, pots, pans, and even wine glasses! Shelves for your own dry food and fridge/freezer space was so well organized. Did not need the laundry, but machines are there as well. Would definitely recommend!
We stayed overnight at the Birdsong despite being thwarted in our original plans to travel south via the Haast Pass (a mountain had fallen on the road and blocked any further travel). A good place to stay overnight—just us and a couple of overseas travellers. There is indeed bird song in the morning, despite the proximity to the main road. Excellent facilities and a considerate host. Just a shame the Sock Museum isn’t making its own socks at the moment. But good to see that the Regent Hokitika is still thriving.
Neil and Kerry were absolutely lovely to work with! From the first greeting they made you feel more of a friend than guest. They were accommodating to my last minute requests and helped make light of the situation. The property itself is very homey feeling, really shows what New Zealand West Coast has to offer with absolutely stunning views. I wish them all the best and would highly suggest anyone heading to Hokitika to stop in!
You will need a car for this hostel, but the location is great: 5 minute walk to the beach and a short ride to a small glow worm dell. Staff is very nice and friendly. It is a cosy place to stay. Only downsides I can think of, that the floor in our dorm was a bit dirty and you only get limited internet access.
