I had a very long day of travel before I arrived at the Tamara Lodge. Though, from the moment I stepped inside my weariness started to fade and an immense sense of comfort set in as I saw the lovely house and was warmly welcomed by the host Barbara. I was shown to a nice clean room where I could... More

The title apples to both the abode & Rory who is the host who greeted us both welcoming and helpful. Tamara is a character 2 storey old dame. A bit chilly but the room was warm with an oil column heater. Located on the bank of the beautiful Whanganui river. Im joining BBH to secure member prices for next time.

I stayed here with my sister (a couple of old ladies) in May 2016 - found it through booking.com and chosen by price. Found a lovely old building, former maternity hospital with a good view of the river. Our ensuite unit was part of a newer building at the back, facing onto the lawn and garden. Very cosy and clean,... More

We received a very friendly welcome form host Rory. His knowledge of the city was great and he helped us maximise the short time we had on our one night stop. We stayed in one of the rooms in the little annexe behind the main building. It was basic but comfortable and good value for money. The shower was very... More

A great place to stay. We had a lovely first floor room at the front overlooking the river. The owner Rory is very friendly and obviously loves his town. Highly recommended. We cooked in the well equipped shared kitchen and ate outside in the lovely tranquil garden. Just ignore the advice about breakfasting at The Orange cafe, the food was... More

Nice common spaces including piano, trampoline, hammocks. Comfortable beds, but there's a really access to the rooms (so not nuch safety). Too little bathroom facilities and a long walk from the (intercity) bus station. But really nice view on river and you can hang out well in the garden.

Thank you very much for taking the time to post a review for us. I am sorry though that we did not give the information clearly enough at the check-in process in regards to the bathroom facilities. It is a large house and I try to impress on the staff that bathrooms are not easily found if the customer dose... More

Tamara Backpackers Lodge in Whanganui already had had plenty positive comments on the Internet, so I was curious to see if my two-night stay there in early January 2016 would corroborate the complimentary comments of others. It did ! The two-bed ensuite unit came complete with air con, high-quality bedding and a view into the people-friendly garden and courtyard. The... More

We stayed here for one night over the New Year's holiday in a double room with private bathroom. What a cool place! Not only were the rooms perfect for the price, they were clean, in a great location and the staff/owners were super friendly and welcoming. The place is a massive old victorian house with heaps of rooms for backpackers... More
