Once an art gallery, cafe and private residence of flamboyant Melbourne artist Mirka Mora and her husband Georges, the Tolarno Hotel has always been a creative space in St Kilda. The tradition continues at Tolarno Hotel. In a salute to the charismatic Mirka, the hotel’s walls and halls are hung with striking artworks by emerging and accomplished artists, 150+ works in total including a number of Mirka’s – guest’s often comment that it’s like staying in an art gallery. Today our 4 star hotel awards 3 major student art prizes via the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA), Monash University and Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) and the yearly winners are exhibited in the hotel foyer for 12 months. Many of the artworks in guest rooms are prize-winning student paintings; the remainder are works by prominant local artists. Combine these striking surrounds with our friendly service, well-appointed rooms and suites and location in the heart of St Kilda’s dining and entertainment precinct and you have a stay like no other. With trams just a 30-second walk from our front door offering easy access to Melbourne’s CBD attractions, shopping, restaurants, events and business precinct, you’re connected to everything the city has to offer.

Excellent value, easy check in after 5pm and 11am checkout. Clean, spacious and comfortable. Location ideal for shows at the Palais Theatre and a stroll around St. Kilda. Plenty of restaurants to choose from. Recommend booking a suite and a word of warning there is no lift.

We had only the 1 night & we had been so happy here last time, that we booked with them again. It is within our lower end budget, nice rooms, artistic atmosphere, we felt quite safe there too. Our room had all that we required for 1 night, but there are other rooms from which to choose: more luxurious etc. It is a pleasant walking distance (even for a slow lass like me) to the bustling area of St Kilda, but is itself surrounded by plenty of options for meals of different kinds. Staff were all lovely to deal with & so very helpful when I was making my booking.

Room Tip: I like the balcony room, but is noisier than an inner room. This doesn't bother me though.

My daughter and I had a wonderful stay at Tolarno before Christmas. It is a quirky little place - but we liked that - and while the room was pretty small, it was comfortable and quiet (you wouldn't have thought you were on Fitzroy Street) and the staff were lovely. The location was perfect with a tram stop right outside the door and somewhere for us to park the car. Should we venture down to Melbourne again, we will definitely be choosing to stay at Tolarno.

Room Tip: For a quiet stay, the thick walls of the old building make the back rooms really quiet.

An efficient space in a small room, with helpful service over the phone from Eric. I checked in late and out early, and it wasn't hard. Security was very good and it was a 5 minute walk to St Kilda beach and pier. Parking was available at a carpark around the corner. You will need to carry your bags up the stairs!
