Great experience from beginning to end! Kids loved playing cricket in the old yard and dressing up in the old uniforms. Very comfortable, and everything we needed. Easy walking distance to centre of town and the developed railway yards were a great place to burn off some energy! Owners were fantastic - a very memorable stay!

Stayed for 2 nights in the 3 bedroom wardens house. James was very helpful and informative about the history of the buildings. Very close to all the shops and restaurants. Plenty to see and do in and around Mount Gambier for the whole family. Will be back for sure.

Had a good night's stay. Cool piece of history too. Pretty interesting. Rooms were comfy enough, pretty small bunks if your in dorm. Like narrow and short. Not much heads pace:) if your not in a dorm well I'm not sure. Cost me $30 for the night. I arrived unannounced which was fine also. Last check in is at 9pm... More

Looking for somewhere different to stay? Then the Old Mount Gambier Gaol is just the place. From the moment we arrived the friendly owner James made us feel welcome as he chatted with us about the history of the gaol. After showing us around the facilities, he led us to our room for the night - a converted cell! The... More

Rocked up late one night thinking we had made a reservation but had actually made it for a few weeks in advance but we felt as if that genuinely wasn't a problem for James and he put us up for the night. It is of course a hostel but definitely the cleanest and most homely hostel we've stayed in in... More

The very welcoming owners clearly love this place and enjoy sharing it with their guests. They have preserved the historic aspects of the prison with plenty of info plaques and it is fascinating to walk round reading them. The well equipped kitchen was great for preparing meals and hot drinks allow there are plenty of restaurants, cafes within walking distance. The... More

The location of this hotel - hostel is impressive and you do get a chance to sleep in jail. There was something weird with the bed sheets thay were soinding ad if you were sleeping on a sheet of paper. This detail doesn't really make it for a great night but you are being an inmate so count it as... More

We stayed at the gaol in January for a week. Stayed in the Warden's cottage and it was fantastic! Thoroughly enjoyed the accommodation, the gaol tour and ofcourse the hospitality of not only Mel & James, but also the other staff who shared stories of the gaols history. Such a unique experience and one that I highly recommend to anyone... More

Our family of five spent one night at the Old Mt. Gambier Gaol. It used to be a Gaol until quite recently. It was fun. We had a six bed dorm style room which suited us fine. It is a hostel type accommodation with shared bathrooms and tv room. This was okay with us. It is definitely something different. The... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Our gaol journey all began with a vision to turn an old debilitated building into a vibrant community asset. We originally hoped to create a new atmosphere that was warm, inviting and both community and family focused. We, along with our two young boys, own and run our family business; we are blessed with the ongoing assistance of our fabulous staff and wonderful family. We have much love for the old building, her history and our spectacular Limestone Coast region and for this reason have opted to remain an independent accommodation provider. We love to travel, enjoy new experiences and meet refreshing people; running the old gaol is allowing us as parents to raise our sons in a beautiful part of Australia whilst still meeting amazing guests from all over the world. Every day we see new faces, are moved and excited by guest’s travel adventures whilst living in an old English prison! We are a young business with many more fun ideas and improvements yet to unveil. We have spent the last three years creating and establishing our business. We are now excited to move onto further promoting who we are and what we have to offer! The Old Mount Gambier Gaol was a functioning 'English Prison' from 1866 to 1994.In 2010 we opened the gaol doors for a new venture. We had a vision to create a place where our community could relax and enjoy various events and where travelers could combine a comfortable stay with a unique experience. Almost three years later we are still pursuing that dream. ... more   less
