If you have the time, and can afford a little luxury, our family group of 6 adults would all agree that a night at the end of the OGR track at this Lodge is well worth it!
It's in a beautiful location, has access down to the Mokihinui River that you've been following the last 2 days of the tramp, and an outdoor shower that is in the bush, with a view of the river.
The rooms, and common areas, are all just a pleasure to be in. There is a mezzazine floor above the dining area, with couches that you can curl up on with one of the many books around... soaking up sun from the big north-facing windows, with views of the river. The food, and friendliness of the staff, is all excellent. Yoyo's pizza, and local craft beers, were greatly enjoyed after our 5 days on the track!

After completing the Old Ghost Road as a hiker, the Rough 'n Tumble is the perfect end to a fantastic experience! Friendly and welcoming staff who made us feel like part of an extended family, while providing for our needs and having a laugh. They made sure we were well taken care of but left us to enjoy the facilities and environment. The food was excellent and the rooms are comfortable and clean. The highlight of the stay for me was the outdoor shower - great water pressure and heat, as well as an exceptional view out over the Mokihinui River in full flood! Warm towels were waiting for us when we arrived and we were given time to settle in and relax without pressure. I'm going back for that shower :-)

After tramping the Old Ghost Road for five days it was a treat to stay at this lodge with its comfortable beds, great food, friendly staff and beautiful location. The outdoor shower was heaven when we got there and the rest of our stay was so relaxing it was hard to leave. Such a nice vibe to the place, you immediately felt at home.

After 5 days of tramping, the Rough and Tumble Lodge is small, intimate and high quality. The welcome from Di was warm, the rooms super-comfortable and appropriately rustic, the Bush-shower is fun, the locations wild and majestic and the food was fantastic. Yoyo the chef cooked up the perfect meal for hungry trampers. It would be a shame not to stay after finishing the Old Ghost Road as it felt like part of the experience and a great reward for getting it done!

Fantastic stay when our group arrived sodden after biking the Old Ghost Road. Nothing could have been better: we were able to use the gorgeous outdoor shower because our rooms weren't ready yet (we were there early), then warmed ourselves over tea, coffee, nachos etc. Rooms were divine. Lodge was clearly a labour of love in terms of design and build. Delicious dinner. Staff couldn't have been more hospitable. We'll be back!

After 5 days of hard, sweaty trekking, the Rough and Tumble Lodge appears like a dream, nestled in the bush and offering showers, lovely bedrooms, and hearty meals. It’s a perfect balance of rustic and comfortable. The bush shower is a must. The roast lamb buffet dinner we had was really generous and the vegetarian option was good. A truly blissful experience all round.

Staff were incredible made us feel at home as soon as we stepped in the door. The location, view and atmosphere were great. Beer on the deck looking out over the beautiful Mokihinui river followed by a bush shower was heaven after days of riding in the bush. Food was delicious, pizza (yummmm) amd the communal meal was well worth it. Can’t waot to return.

The best way you could possibly imagine to end the Old Ghost Road experience. This unique, quirky beautfully presented lodge (even complete with sandfly mesh) is an absolute "must" - not only on completing the OGR, but also for a few nights while exploring the area. Yoyo is a thoughtful, caring chef who puts time and energy into creating appropriate menus for the visitors. Di was such a warm, welcoming, yet professional hostess, greeting each group with warmth and a genuine interst as they arrived. Everything was clean and fresh, and nothing was too much trouble for either Yoyo or Di. I cannot recommend this place and the staff highly enough. Please do not miss this unique experience.

This is the second time I've stayed and both times at this small lodge have been great. First time was after walking the Old Ghost Road with a group and it was a lovely finish. This time we came to share the experience with a non-walking friend. A lovely drive in to a remote river setting in the bush. Lots of native bird song. The two staff made us very welcome, our room (Red Queen) was very comfortable with good views of the bush) and the meal was great. It's served at a set time and required pre-booking. NZ Covid Tracing app QR code in plain view for people to record their location - New Zealand has no Covid cases in the community at this time so there is no distancing/masks required at the lodge.

We were riding OGR in a day as part of a week-long adventure. Travelling as light as possible, we rang ahead to ask Rough and Tumble Lodge to prepare us lunch which we would pick up at the start in Seddonville. Emma was really accommodating - nothing was a problem - even us turning up at 7.15 before the restaurant opened for breakfast.
On turning up we were offered coffee and tea while the chef put the finishing touches to the lunches. The lunches themselves were amazing. Brownie, the best trail mix I've ever had, and mint lamb sandwiches. We were expecting a good basic lunch, but these were amazing. Thanks Rough and Tumble!
