The South Sea Hotel was a great base for our Stewart island experience. Great old New Zealand style hotel. The rooms are basic but really clean, along with the shared bathroom facilities. The upstairs lounge overlooking the bay is a gem, and just so relaxing. Loved their restaurant food. Tried virtually everything on the seafood menu and it was great....

We stayed for one night at the South Sea hotel. As far as location, it cannot be beat, the hotel is 200m from the wharf where the ferry lands and has a water view. Additionally, most of the amenities in town are near by. Staff were friendly and helpful, and even let us store bags for the day after check...

Had an evening meal, breakfast and lunch at the hotel. All were delicious and well presented. Staff were welcoming and friendly. Although the prices were a little high, there were cheaper options available and the location means that some things need to be accepted.

Dear Madam/Sir, RE: South Sea Hotel is a one of its kind place on the Stewart Island. The hotel caters delicious cod and chips to the tourists as well as the sparsely populated islanders. Food and drinks are served here with separate enclosure for seating and dining. Outdoor seating is also available along with limited accommodation for the visiting tourists....

We booked 3 rooms for 2 nights (Christmas eve and Christmas day). After I made the reservation, I inquired about restaurant bookings for Christmas dinner, and was told that their restaurant would not be open. Thank goodness for Churchill's up the road! When we arrived, there was much confusion about breakfast the next morning, them first saying that they would...

We didn't stay here. We called in for coffee, lunch and dinner on different days. Just such a special atmosphere - people using the bar piano for practise/rehearsal; the occasional weary person snoozing in the lounge; photos of people and events. No hassle, but service still attentive. Such a change from impersonal and slick suburbia.

We travelled as a group of 3 ladies doing the Rakiura track and stayed here on the first and last nights. This hotel was just what we needed, reasonably priced, basic but comfortable rooms with a wash basin, shared showers and facilities. The shared bathroom facilities worked really well, although the hotel was pretty full there was always a shower...

I chose the cheapest room option and you get what you pay for. It was a spotlessly clean basic room, with sink and towels, mirror and blankets etc. The guest lounge is really nice and it's great value for money. You can't beat the view! The meals served here are fantastic. Where they have the monopoly almost they certainly haven't...

What a superb motel / hotel on this amazing island. We struck terrible weather and our return to Bluff was delayed and the staff could not have been more helpful and understanding of the situation. In good weather ... perfect!!

Comfortable and spacious rooms with modern facilities. Flat screen TVs.microwave, fridge, coffee and tea facilities. We also enjoyed a great cooked breakfast in the morning. The only thing missing was free wifi , this was a paid service only. The free wifi at the library was also out of service, however this was a temporary outage only. Highly recommended.
