Novotel Queenstown Lakeside has won favor for its prime location near the lake and local attractions, as reported by numerous guests. While the hotel's cleanliness and the professionalism of its staff are often commended, some travelers have expressed concerns regarding the need for modernizing both the amenities and rooms.
The atmosphere receives mixed reviews, balancing comfort and scenic views with dated elements. Additionally, critiques have surfaced about the hotel's value proposition, pointing out the high cost of parking and additional fees for amenities typically expected to be included.

Hotel's Favorite
Novotel Queenstown Lakeside is in a great location in the main part of Queenstown. After taking a short taxi ride from the Airport, we checked in within minutes of arriving and were greeted with a friendly Guest Services Agent. The hotel is fitted with elevators and the view from our room was breathtaking.
This was my first time in New Zealand and Queenstown but this will stick with me forever. Unfortunately the air con in the room was not working but did not want to bother the staff as we were there for only a short stay but mentioned it upon check out.
They offer a buffet breakfast which I would recommend and this property is within walking distance to it all! Highly recommend this place to anyone!

We had an amazing week at the Novotel Lakeside.
Every single interaction we had with a staff member was positive - from the front counter staff, to the cleaners, to the restaurant.
The breakfast buffet was amazing, and the switch to Level 2 restricted breakfast went smoothly in the middle of our holiday.
The location is epic, and we made significant use of it - our car spent more time in the valet parking than out and about with us as we walked to most attractions.
The room was comfortable and clean, and the "mountain view" upgrade (the "mountain" you get to view is that of the gondola, and it was strange to see the upper station dark at night with no night luge operating) was great because it meant we got fantastic afternoon sunshine.
The rooms are feeling a little tired - pulls in the carpet, chips in the paint on skirtings. But these minor imperfections in no way detract from the amazing experience we had.

Dear Amelia M Thanks for staying and for your feedback - of course we love positive comments but really do appreciate all feedback. We have been working with the owners of the Hotel for quite some time on a refurbishment programme which was to be major - Covid may have delayed this and changed the scale but we are working through this still. Our aim as managers is to have friendly well trained staff, to have a clean and well maintained hotel and to focus on areas that we can do something about while we wait for these works to be completed. We have recently upgraded the spa pool, changed most of the beds ( more to be done) and the bedding, new large screen TVs, upgraded the wifi system, the couches in the bar and various other things that we hope will enhance the comfort for our guest. Great that you enjoyed the location and the car parking etc - we hope you will come back and see us again soon. We really appreciate the support we have been getting from our Domestic visitors and it makes a huge difference through these challenging times. Thanks Jim Moore General Manager

We booked this hotel primarily for the location. I would rather question its lakeside proximity. The way the hotel faces is primarily on a street with just the end of the hotel being lakeside. This being said our room had some mountain views from the tiny balcony but generally from our room all we could see were other rooms. I am also not sure what kind of lake view you would get as the lakeside has lots of very large trees which obstruct the view.
We had booked our room plus breakfast using their website several months in advance and prepaid. The room was on the 3rd floor close to the lift. The room was large with a king sized bed which was very comfortable, a chair and coffee table, tea and coffee making facilities and an iron and ironing board. There was also an in room safe and plenty of storage space.
The bathroom was tiny with the smallest wash basin and shower over the bath. The bathroom needed some TLC with peeling paint .
The public spaces were light and airy with a bar downstairs and restaurant upstairs. The bar had lots of comfy seats and view of a garden. They had made some effort with a few Christmas decorations and an open fire. There was a Christmas tree in the lobby but shoved in a corner.
We found the breakfast which was a buffet to be really excellent and the staff quite good. There was plenty of choice from an egg station, cooked selection, fruit, cereals, yoghurts, cheeses and a beautiful salmon every day. there were also juices, tea etc and plenty of breads and pastries. it was all DIY apart from the egg station where you ordered your omelette and it was delivered to the table.
The restaurant overlooks the street.
The location is very good and you can walk everywhere in central Queenstown. I think the parking is quite expensive but we didn't have a car so it didn't effect us.
Front desk staff were functional. We had checked in online so we were very quick.
Overall we enjoyed our stay.

Dear KiwichickAuckland Thanks for your comments. The hotel is located on the lakeside which means you can walk out of the hotel and be on the foreshore of the lake within a minute of being out of the hotel - we do not try to claim we are anything other than this and in fact do not advertise lake view rooms even. You are correct in Summer many of the rooms at the front of the hotel have limited views because of the trees - in Autumn and Winter they actually do get views. Good to see you overall enjoyed your stay and enjoyed your breakfast. The hotel is always full over the Xmas New Year period so having a Christmas tree in the middle of the lobby would be impractical - it is situated in view in the lobby and there to be enjoyed. We appreciate your opinion around the cost of parking provided however again the alternatives in Queenstown are $4/hour - we charge $20 over night in the same carpark - it is free on the meters overnight but a $40 fine if you leave your car outside of the allotted times - or $25/night for us to valet car-park your car and drop it back to you as often as you like we think this is reasonable. Having stayed in Auckland and Wellington recently and paid $40/45 and in San Francisco and paid $70USD for parking I think we are reasonably price for the service offered. We do hope you enjoyed Queenstown and that we will get to see you again soon - thanks for all of the feedback. regards Jim Moore General Manager

The hotel was clean with a fantastic location. We booked their base room and were complimentarily upgraded to a mountain view which was fantastic. It overlooked the Skyline and then to the side we could see the lake through some trees, all of which was fabulous to see as the sunset behind the view. The room was clean and functional. We do wish that the door to the restroom had been solid instead of frosted glass as anytime a light was turned on in the bathroom as it made it harder for one person to sleep while the other was using the bathroom area. Their shampoo and conditioner had a very mild, unisex scent and worked well for me. The buffet seemed very expensive and there was no option for someone just wanting a couple eggs and toast.

Dear dleighb Thanks for staying and for the feedback. We appreciate your comments about the buffet - with the numbers of people that we cater for it is not really possible to cater for absolutely everyone's individual tastes so we aim to offer a wide range of options at a reasonable price. In regards to just doing a couple of eggs you are correct again this is not what we do but we are around several great cafes that do offer this type of service so there are many choices available. The majority of feedback we get about breakfast is really positive and with the numbers catered for this also indicates that many of our guests do enjoy the options that we offer - full breakfast, continental breakfast - or just tea and toast. Thanks again - hope to see you soon Jim Moore General Manager

I stayed here twice over December 2020 and January 2021. The January booking means that I've stayed at Novotel Queenstown Lakeside four times now, it's become my regular hotel in town. It was part of an excellent deal with Ultimate Hikes for a one night stay before and after walking the Milford Track with them. If you're walking with Ultimate Hikes on any of their tracks in the region, you could book this add-on option as well; it's incredibly convenient and I found it cheaper than making a reservation independently.
Please see my other reviews for descriptions of the hotel. To add to these, Novotel Queenstown Lakeside is superbly organised to cater to people walking multi-day treks in nearby regions, such as a number of New Zealand's Great Walks. My friend and I, who I travelled with, were able to store our luggage for five days while we were away walking the Milford Track. Not only that, but when we returned it was beautifully awaiting us in our spacious bedrooms. My friend was able to leave his car at the hotel at what I thought was a reasonable price, but check with reception as this varies depending on availability. There are nearby long term carparks as well.
The hotel also had a convenient self service laundry which was ideal when we returned from the Milford Track. Normally 4 star international hotels charge outrageous prices to do laundry for guests. This one however, allows guests to do laundry themselves in coin operated washing machines and dryers at reasonable prices. This was welcomed because we were in the middle of a trip around the South Island which included Aoraki Mt Cook as our next destination. The fact that we could travel there with clean clothes was much appreciated.
My experience of this hotel gets better every time I stay here. Now I can't think of staying anywhere else in Queenstown!

Dear Horizon-the-Island Great that we were able to look after you and your friend while you were here to walk the Milford Track - we know that you will have had a fantastic experience enjoy some of the most beautiful parts of the country and in fact the World. We have worked with Ultimate Hikes now for many years so have worked to develop services that we hope meet the needs of those doing the walks - and a number of similar activities around the area such as the Otago Rail Trail, Around the Mountains or just getting out and exploring. It is good to hear that this worked for you and we do look forward to having you stay with us again soon. Regards Jim Moore General Manager

Hotel is tired, rooms and bathrooms are tired and in need of renovation. Having said that, we enjoyed our stay because the location was so convenient with young children- you are on the lakefront and in the centre of everything. Brilliant playground for kids at front of hotel , adjacent to lake. Guest laundry was so convenient when travelling with kids. Beds were comfortable. Breakfast was good. Would stay again as the location is unbeatable but please renovate! The hotel is not good value, given the price which is expensive, relative to the standard of the hotel and rooms which really need renovation. Valet parking was convenient.

Dear Katereviews2016 Thanks for your comments - it was good to see that you enjoyed the Hotel and your time in Queenstown. The hotel was meant to go through a full refurbishment a couple of years ago but then the owners sold it to new owners. We have certainly been working with the owners to get these works done as soon as possible and have designers, architects and planners as well as other contractors all working on plans. These works will be significant and we are sure will bring the Hotel up to being one of the best hotels in the best location in Queenstown. In the meantime if you are coming back the 4 th floor of the hotel was added new a few years back so is more modern than the rest of the building. With all rooms our aim is to try to maintain them and keep them clean and to have friendly staff. Major projects such as this do take some time but we also aim to offer value which is a relative thing. We consider what is happening in the market and at various times Queenstown can be relatively expensive due to demand. We appreciate your feedback and do hope you will come back to see us again soon and that once our works are done you will get to enjoy the hotel the way we would like all of our guests to enjoy it. Thanks Jim Moore General Manager

You can’t beat this location, the Novotel is located in central Queenstown a stones throw away from the lake.
My husband and I spent 4 nights here and were happy with our choice of hotels, we are Accor members so we take advantage of the benefits that come with this membership, free arrival drinks, priority check in area.
Let me start with the staff, everyone we encountered was super friendly and welcoming.
The rooms are fairly basic but the beds are super comfortable and the rooms are fitted with their own heat pumps so you can choose the exact temperature you wish to have your room at.
I would say that the windows are not double glazed so you certainly need to utilise the hearing.
Our room was serviced extremely promptly everyday and to a high standard.
My only complaint about the room would be about the fact they use shower curtains, in my opinion these are dated and can be dirty, who wants a shower curtain sticking to your body while you shower… obviously it’s done the same to other people before you too - yuck!
The lobby/ bar area has a limited amount of comfortable seating near the one fire place.
There is a lot of glass in this area and I wouldn’t recommend the seats located next to the floor to ceiling glass windows as it’s cold there.
The staff at the bar are super friendly.
It would have been nice to have bar snack menus at the tables surrounding the bar, if there was we would have been inclined to order some food.
We used the valet service at $25 a day which was extremely easy to use and quick and convenient .
Straight across the road is a fish and chip food truck called eriks which is meant to be really good and Botswana butchery is also located around the corner which is one of our favourite Queenstown restaurants.
All in all this hotel is a winner! Great staff, excellent location and comfortable rooms.

Our family stayed here for 3 nights in January 2021. The hotel is within walking distance of the town centre and immediately next to the lake edge park. We hada lakeside view, but this is actually obscured by the lakeside trees.
The hotel breakfast was good, but the hotel has very limited car parking - valet parking is required here and must be paid for ($25 a day). The parking cost is not always clear on booking websites. The good location of the site means that there is not spare areas for parking. Had we known in advance, we would have deferred getting our hire car for a couple of days.
The room sizes are fine, although we had noisy people upstairs which was easy to observe. The floor to floor acoustic separation is probably not up to current standards. This only matters with noisy neighbours, as rooms are all carpeted. However, having stayed in many old hotels in NZ, this is not a problem we have experienced before.

Dear Redrocket1969 Thanks for staying and for your review. We do not advertise rooms with Lakeviews and the photos we have show the trees - there is a small upgrade fee for the rooms on the lakeside of the hotel as there are not many of them and they are popular - people like to look out over the grassed area to the foreshore of the lake. In Winter when the trees drop their leaves these rooms do actually get great views - but we try to make sure we do not over sell the view aspect. In terms of park the Hotel has Valet Parking and has also arranged additional parking at discounted rates at Wilson's Carpark 1 block form the Hotel - both options are $25 and both options are listed on the websites that we run as paid parking. We recently found one site that did not list this as a paid service and are working to make sure that this is changed. Without the discount the Wilson's parking would be about $75-95 a day so it is a good discount. We are sorry that you were impacted by noisy guests and we do try to ensure that our guests are not disturbed by others. We are happy to contact guests that are making too much noise to remind them of considering others and to be involved if they do not. Thanks for bringing these matters to our attention - we hope you enjoyed your time in Queenstown and will return in the not too distant future. Jim Moore General Manager

Hotel staff were very friendly and helpful. The location is unbeatable with the lake front being across the road, as well as the main shopping area. Our room was clean and had all we needed in it. A little on the pricey side, but that's queenstown for you.
HANDY TIP,
We took a shuttle from airport to the
Novatel for $12 each, be sure to book your own shuttle back to the aiport, because if you get reception to book a shuttle for you, they will charge a little extra.

Dear Found-Lost-Key Thanks for your review and for staying - pricey is somewhat subjective but Queenstown in general is currently offering great value with rates at the lowest levels they have been for years. This is not only for accommodation but for all of the activities as we try to stay afloat in the current crisis. We do not charge any booking fees for any of the activities that we book on behalf of our guests so unless the shuttle gave you a special pricing then we are only charging what they tell us to charge for their services - this is a great way for us to be able to assist our guests and for them to take advantage of booking everything through us, being ticketed by us and paying us. Hope we can see you again some time Jim Moore General Manager

I would give the Novotel Lakeside 4.5 out of 5, there are really only minor points to not make full marks.
Overall, we had a great week at this hotel for our ski holiday in Queenstown.
The two biggest strong points for the hotel ate the location and its amazing staff!
The hotel is at the edge of the city centre with bars, restaurants and shops in walking distance. This means you won’t need a car or any other form of transport to get around.
The staff are absolutely outstanding! Everyone is so friendly. The receptionists, concierges, cleaners, room service, restaurant staff, all were amazing and the hotel can really be proud to have such a great team.
We had two interconnecting rooms for us as a family of four. Since we were on a ski holiday and really only spent time in the hotel to sleep, the small deficits didn’t bother us. The rooms are a bit dated and so are the bathrooms. The bathtubs are a bit too shallow for an adult but there is an abundance of hot water hot shower, which is obviously important after a long day skiing. The TVs are new and large, there is a small fridge in the room which was empty. This may have been for covid reasons. Whenever I have a choice between a stocked minibar and an empty fridge though, I choose the latter. A kettle and basic tea and instant coffee was provided. The tap water is ice cold and fresh, no need for bottled water. Our rooms were facing the back of the hotel, which again didn’t bother us. We didn’t spend much time in the room during daylight hours to enjoy lake or courtyard vistas. A bit more shel space or drawers for clothes would have been great, we used the desk drawers so that we don’t have to live out of the suitcases.
The bathrooms could have been a bit cleaner, but again we understand that most businesses suffer from staff shortages which may explain some of the minor negatives. There is the possibility yo opt out from room cleaning on some or all days and a credit of $20 was applied per day and room. We would still get shampoos, fresh towels etc when asking for it. The credit paid easily for our parking fees and all barista coffees at the breakfast. So that was a win.
We had a rental car and made use of the valet parking at 25$/day which was super efficient.
The breakfast buffet was good and at the level you’d expect at that price point. Eggs were cooked to order (they made the perfect poached eggs!) and there was a good choice of pastry, cereals, cold meats, and hot items. The barista coffees were very good at 5$ I think.
The bottom line is that we will absolutely return to the Novotel Lakeside for our next ski trip to Queenstown.
Overall, we had a great week at this hotel for our ski holiday in Queenstown.
The two biggest strong points for the hotel ate the location and its amazing staff!

Response from Jim Moore, General Manager at Novotel Queenstown Lakeside

Hi Drckarcher, Great to hear we almost made it to the perfect score - the good news is we are working on the points you have raised ( although it will take some time) Pre COVID we were very close to having final designs on the next upgrade of the hotel which was to be a massive project. With the difficulties around supply change, construction etc and an almost total lack of business for 2.5 years the owners went back to the drawing board. Architects and Designers etc are on board and we are in the process of redesigning 3 rooms as prototypes and getting designs for the public areas. Once this has been done and compliance is out of the way we will be starting the project - the works will be significant and in a hotel of our size will take some time but we are confident at the end of it we will have an amazing hotel in the best location in town. Our job as Manager's through this time is to have an amazing team and to maintain the hotel as best we can and to keep it as clean as we can. You are correct that staffing and managing is very difficult with guest volumes at the highest they have been in 2.5 years, staff illness higher than I have experienced in 40 years of running hotels and a number of other challenges. When I arrived at the hotel 14 years ago I set out with our Human Resource Manager to create a culture of "family" many of our staff were from overseas ( 25 different countries) and/or were young and away from their family for the first time. We worked hard to develop staff, to get them to support and look after each other, to have fun at work and out of work and to develop their careers. We have many people that have stayed for over 10 years now - unfortunately with COVID many amazing staff chose to go home and have been replaced with great people that are not quite as skilled and experienced but they will get there. You are absolutely correct we are incredibly proud of the team we have - while its impossible to get it right all of the time there is a care factor and a desire to do the right thing that makes a huge difference. thanks for your comments. We hope that your return visit will not be too far away. Regards Jim Moore General Manager

… I agree. Contact the hotel. I wasn’t driving. Great hotel though, and great location, if you get it worked out.

Not sure why this did not come up with a notification of your question so I am sorry that you did not get an official response sooner.
The hotel has 3 one bedroom suites - 2 of these are on the top (4th) floor and 1 on the third floor. The top floor suites interconnect with a room that has 2 Double beds - that interconnects with a king that interconnects with a 3rd room with 2 Double Beds - so you could have all 3 rooms plus the suite if required.
We do not claim to have any rooms that have lake views - the rooms are lakeside and do get a view in Winter but have trees in the park that do obscure the views at other times of the year.
I trust this helps and again apologies for the slow response

Thanks for your question. We do not state that any of our rooms have lake views - in Winter and Spring the views are pretty good from the Lakeside rooms as the leaves on the trees drop.
In Summer the trees do obscure the views but the ground floor rooms do get a better view.
The Lakeside rooms overlook a grassed area down to the foreshore of the lake - there are only 35 of these rooms in the Hotel and they are often popular because of this.
The upper floor on the lakeside are more modern and have interconnecting options.
The beauty of the property is that we have a great location - near the Queenstown Gardens, steps from the town and the lake - so you really can enjoy all that Queenstown has to offer.
We hope that this information helps you -
