Detailed Reviews
We had a comfortable stay here. Our room 608 was large and bright with windows along two walls and the ability to open windows which was great. The bathroom was tight but adequate and offered nice shampoo/conditioner shower gel etc plus handy makeup wipes. The beds are comfortable with great soft & med feather pillows. We slept very comfortably.
The usual hot drink making facilities + nice plunger coffee. Room service dinner was good, we also booked a cooked breakfast the morning after our show which turned up a smidge early but was good & good value. The location was great, a short walk to the casino, bars & restaurants + great shopping nearby. Car parking at the hotel seemed expensive but was convenient. The city public transportation is not very good.. especially if you’re here from out of town for a show and the weather is bad. But if you’re game lime scooters are readily available in and around the city.
All in all it was a good stay and we’d stay again if coming back to Dunedin for a show.

On a tour of NZ we stayed here for one night. The hotel is in a good location within easy walking of the centre, shops and restaurants.
The room was large with big beds but with the sun on the window in the afternoon and no aircon, it was very hot. In an attempt to cool it down, the window had been left open but with a noisy road outside we had to close it. During the night, the noise outside continued and was troublesome. Only in the morning when drawing the curtains did we discover that there was secondary double glazing which had been left fully open and hence unnoticed. Had we seen this and closed it, the large air gap might have reduced the outside noise significantly. As with many hotels in NZ, the shower was in the bath which meant care was needed not to slip.
The haggis ceremony was very good even though a number of people were 'afraid' to try the haggis - a shame as it was very tasty. The dinner which followed was from a menu selection rather than buffet style and, despite the numbers, was very good and timely. Unfortunately the breakfast selection did not live up to the dinner and was no better than average.

My wife and I were touring New Zealand, on a 15-day tour arranged through Travelmarvel by APT, and so all hotel arrangements were made in advance by them. For that reason, I have no idea of the cost of the room or how well the hotel communicates with customers making direct bookings. However, though we were only booked in for one night, I can say that the hotel is well located, on Princes Street, and handy for bars, shops and restaurants. We had a nice room, with a good bed, and there was an iron & ironing board in the room, which is handy when you are touring both islands on a coach trip. The room also had a hairdryer and a safe. The food we had in the evening was excellent, yet the breakfast was rather disappointing by comparison, as I found the food to be cold and the bacon extremely fatty. Apart from that relatively small issue, which may have been a one-off occasion, I’d happily recommend this hotel for a short stay.

The Scenic Hotel, situated close to the Octagon in the heart of the city, was both comfortable and convenient. The greatest convenience is its location, as a number of cafes, restaurants and stores are at walking distance. Otherwise the hotel is rather simple, providing standard amenities, service and facilities. The dining facilities are limited to a lobby level cafeteria only.
I would rate the hotel Three Star.

Central location in Dunedin, clean room. Only disappointment was the breakfast. Come on guys, it's really not that difficult to make sure the buffet food is hot and the coffee drinkable. Any vegan travellers, there are cold baked beans (!) and tinned fruit options. You will need to bring your own toiletries as these all contain honey. In order to cater for the forthcoming influx of holiday makers (hopefully), the hotel probably needs to consider its vegan friendly options.

Thank you for your review. It seems it has been posted to Scenic Hotel Dunedin City's tripadvisor page by mistake as we are currently closed and have been closed since March 2020. We hope to reopen later this year - we too are very much looking forward to an influx of holiday makers! It seems likely that you stayed at Scenic Hotel Southern Cross, our sister hotel here in Dunedin. I will ensure the manager there is made aware of your comments as we hate to see our guests leaving dissatisfied. I am very sorry that you were disappointed with the breakfast - I know the Southern Cross normally gets great reviews for its breakfast but it looks like the normal checks on the buffet were not made. I will also pass on your comments about our toiletries to our Group Procurement team. You raise a valid point and whilst we enjoy the Earth Botanic products as they are a NZ made, high quality product with no artificial ingredients, we should consider having an option for Vegans. Many thanks once again for your comments. With best wishes Adrian

+1
1// The hotel was excessive at $400 priced matched at $379 per night!! .. Dunedin had a couple of major events on and accomodation was scarce so they thought to wrought you on price for a one off stay not long term thinking for repeat custom and good will.
2// For our exorbitant $379 per night we arrived to a very stuffy room with NO Air Conditioning, just a basic fan.
3// Room very noisy as we had to open the small windows to breath fresh air and cool the room as fan was insufficient.
4// Bathroom was dirty and water damage.
5// Cutains were ripped in numerous areas.
6// We returned to our room at 4.15pm and our rooms had not been serviced!!
1// spacious
2// good area for baggage handling
Would not recommend

We liked the hotel overall. The location is in easy walking distance of plenty of attractions (check out 'Hard To Find Secondhand Bookshop' around the corner). Dinner in the restaurant was good, but the breakfast buffet was excellent. Not a lot of dishes but what was there was tasty. I'll take quality over quantity any day. The room was ok; clean, the bed was comfortable. Plenty of storage, but it was awkwardly placed. Room was somewhat dated. The air conditioning was only so-so. We're from the US and are used to setting the air very low to sleep (bad for the environment, I know). We were able to sleep only by adding a floor fan. Staff was really nice and helpful. Overall, I would be glad to stay there again.

This room was described as "executive" and came with an executive price tag but was decidedly ordinary. Nothing stood this room apart from a $225 /night room but was twice this price.
The bed was comfy.

This hotel is quite nice although dated in places. The problem for me is we were part of a bus tour group (there were many groups in) and you get the worst rooms they have, such as next to the elevator which we got. It’s a shame as the hotel does seem reasonable but so far we have experienced the same issue with all the scenic hotels we have visited. The breakfast was OK although the orange juice was awful (very cheap brand I suspect) and the Danish pastries were a bit below standard.

Dear Steve, thank you for letting us know how your recent stay was, we appreciate your feedback however were sorry to hear that your experience was not as pleasant as it could have been. Unfortunately room allocations are just the luck of the drawer with as you say so many rooms to allocate they are in no way predetermined or given better or worse preference, we hope you understand. I had booked at the last minute to attend a concert in Dunedin so there was not a lot of accommodation available. I payed more that I normally would for my room at this Hotel but it was worth every penny. The view, the outdoor setting, the furnishings and ambiance were all exceptional. I had only been in my room a short time when water and chocolate was delivered to me - I would stay again as it is very well appointed and located only a 5 minute walk from the Octagon and the train station.

Thanks for your question. We have limited guest car parking on site in our basement car parking. I would recommend booking a space as these spaces do get booked up. This is a self park facility, not valet parking but you have freedom to come and go as you please as your guest keycard will give you access to the basement.
Alternative parking can be found very close by, either on the street or in one of two public car parks in Moray Place, just a short walk from the hotel.
I hope this answers your question.
With best wishes
Adrian
We have a wide variety of options for breakfast ranging in price from about $10 for Tea/ Coffee, Toast and Juice on our a la carte menu up to $29 for the full buffet selection. Breakfast service starts at 6.00am and goes through until 10.00am.
Hi. Yes we have two guest laundries. One on Level 2 and one on level 5. They each have a washing machine and a dryer in and the cost is $2 per wash and $2 per dry. You will find a sachet of washing powder in the room but if you need more then there is a machine in each laundry and the cost is $2 per extra sachet. Money can be exchanged at the front desk if you don't have the correct change. I hope this information helps.
Best wishes
Adrian
