We are travelling from the UK and had 3 nights booked in the lodge over the Easter weekend. On arrival at about 5.30pm we were greeted by a grumpy member of staff who made us feel very unwelcome. We were given the briefest of information told we were too late to book dinner and that we would have to travel to Portabello if we needed to eat.
We were told that breakfast is the only meal they serve apart from the private dining room dinner which we did book to have on our last evening and was very nice and well worth doing. That said having been told that no other meals were served we were surprised to see that other guests seem to have received meals delivered to their rooms??
As a previous review mentions some of the staff do make you feel that you are there under sufferance and are unhelpful. The staff could certainly do with training in guest relations. That said the
castle is situated in a beautiful location with fantastic views over the peninsula and has beautiful gardens and overall is a lovely place to stay.

The stable annexe is somewhat primitive: low ceilings, insufficient curtaining, no ensuite (the showers are on the small side). However, as well as being good value, the plus sides of being in the castle well exceed the minor irritation with the room. In particular you can buy dinner in the castle followed by a tour (a must) and you get free access to the lovely gardens and grounds (fantastic) with their amazing views. The breakfast is good, too. NB the lodge is different accommodation (nicer but more expensive)

We booked a package from wotif.com that included a night in the lodge, the 'trust the chef' dinner, cooked breakfast the next day and of course, access to the castle and grounds. We really enjoyed it. Had been to the castle a few years ago.. but was fun to look around again. Grounds are amazing. Accommodation was nice with a fabulous view from our room of the bay. Superb. Good shower pressure. Lovely cooked breakfast in the ball room felt very special. Had afternoon tea there the day before with scones, jam and cream. The dinner was a nice affair with other guests staying there. Lovely experience to be dining in the actual castle. The dinner was average though. Nice experience.. but if it wasn't part of the package.. I would feel the cover-charge unjustified for what it was. The food was nice.. but unexceptional.. and wasn't filling.

We stayed in the Lodge for 2 nights, which was quite comfortable. We had a wonderful view out across the Peninsular from our upper floor room. Excellent breakfast every morning, served in the Stable.
Evening dinner in the Castle was an excellent fine dining experience. At a cost of $95 per person some people might be put off, but we felt the 4 course meal was well worth the money.
Staying at the Lodge gave us free unlimited access to the Castle and the wonderful gardens.
For travellers who want to spoil themselves for a couple of days, we recommend this venue

I had booked a room at the lodge assuming this was one of the rooms with en-suite facilities but when I got there they said I was in the stables, their hostel style accommodation with shared facilities. I explained this was unacceptable and found an alternative. Only a night manager was on duty ( nice lady) who said someone would email me about a refund. Heard nothing.

First, the hotel is really nice, modern and the rooms are equipped in a way we did like

We met three young members of the staff, and there were very nice to us, making the experience really enjoyable

Then there is also an older member of staff, very grumpy, unable to answer service requests (we went back to our room without any of the support we requested)

Much worse: she was the driver to the restaurant in the nearby mansion
We had to ask several times for her to get us back, until we saw she was drinking red wine in the kitchen.
When she finally showed up, she was clearly intoxicated
Unacceptable for the service level that this hotel aims for
Cant imagine why she is still working for the hotel…….

Beside, the menu at the mansion is really not worth it. They have too many guests to serve at the same time, and it turns out to canteen-level food.
Go to the seaside instead.

Hello Thank you for your review and direct feedback alerting us to this. We sincerely apologise that you’ve had this experience as it does not meet our standards. We take pride in providing an excellent guest experience where safety is paramount. This is a serious allegation and goes against all of our company policies, procedures, and guest care. As noted in our email correspondence directly with you, we are investigating this in the most serious manner, and it will be dealt with appropriately. Thank you also for your feedback regarding your dinner experience. This experience is in keeping with the historic setting and traditional dinner service, where all guests are seated and served together, house-party style. We are pleased that you had some positive and enjoyable experiences with our hosts and accommodation – we expect this to be the standard for the full experience and are disappointed that it wasn’t so. We appreciate the opportunity to stay in contact with you via direct email channel. Many thanks, Larnach Castle Management

We stayed here two nights while exploring the Otago Peninsula. The castle is in a great location as you can enjoy the grounds and the castle as part of your lodging at no extra cost and you are there before it gets busy. In addition, your drive to various points on the peninsula is shorter than staying in Dunedin and the views are definitely way better at the Castle. The breakfast each morning was included but it was just ok. The service was slow and the food was just average. We did not do the dinner as we did not see anything on the menu we liked. However, not eating dinner at the castle leaves you with limited options if you dont want to drive over to Dunedin. We chose to drive over to Dunedin and that was a good choice as there are a lot of dinner options in town. The rooms in the castle are moderate in size but they are clean and have a decent sized bathroom. The view out the window of our room was great as you could see the bay, Dunedin and the Otago Peninsula. The grounds are well kept with all kinds of plants, trees and flowers so they are lovely to just walk around and see the many birds attracted to the cover. We saw a lot of Tui and other birds in the gardens. From the castle you can take drives to the penguins, albatross and sea lion colonies that call the peninsula home. Just keep in mind that lunch options are limited and some places that do serve lunch are not open every day so check before you head out. We ended up eating at the Albatross center as there was nothing else open that day on the drive over.

Larnach castle is the only castle in New Zealand. The main castle has been renovated and is open for viewing. The lodges and stables have been converted to guest rooms. We stayed in the lodges. I would describe them as rustic, but comfortable - each lodge had a queen and twin bed. We had a small porch overlooking views of the Otago Peninsula. Castle gardens were well maintained and lovely for an evening stroll. No food served in the evenings other than a Chef's table 5 course menu, which we were unable to participate in due to our 9 pm reservation to see penguins. Breakfast was good with a warm cooked-to-order menu as well as a continental breakfast. The road to the castle was quite narrow and windy for our large Kia Sorrento, but staying in the castle lodges was a unique experience that we are glad we had.

We stayed at Larnach Castle Lodge for one night in the lovely 'Sea' room with restful blue surroundings, two windows with spectacular views over the harbour. Trish made sure we were settled in and left us to walk around the gardens before dark. We had the set dinner in the castle, two tables of ten, white linen and candles, pleasant company and a good meal. Trish did double duty (the castle suffering from a staff shortage after Covid) but her between-courses history of the castle, Larnach, the Barkers, was well done. Our package included an excellent cooked and continental breakfast in the stables, and entry to the castle next day (another helpful staff member doing double duty for check-out and day visitor management). We'd toured before but still spent at least 90 minutes in this beautiful place. Congratulations, and best of luck for a swift recovery when NZ is up and running again.

Awful place to stay, noisy and dirty. Windows were broken and dirty, decor was trying to be regal but instead is garish. Unaware that we needed to book dinner 24 hours in advance we were offered tomato soup in the stable (the restaurant is upstairs so not accessible). Parking very difficult anywhere near the rooms unless you are lucky. Checkout before 9 is at the gift shop in the main building as is breakfast which is just bizarre. We got the impression that we should be privileged to stay and fit around their requirements rather than the Lodge being welcoming with a focus on customer service. We cut our losses and left a day early.

Hi there, Larnach Castle does not offer a shuttle from the airport to the Castle. However, you can book transport with a local shuttle or taxi company. Shuttle prices between the airport and Dunedin are relatively cheap. We do apologise for this inconvenience and any disappointment. Kind regards, Reid | Marketing Support | Larnach Castle

Hi Victoria, Larnach Castle offers the unique option of dining in the Castle for all accommodation guests. We also have a Ballroom Cafe on site open between 9:30am and 4:00pm. You can find information on both of these things on the website under "Accommodation" > "Dinner in the Castle". Kind regards, Reid | Marketing Support | Larnach Castle
