We stayed in the Lodge for 2 nights, which was quite comfortable. We had a wonderful view out across the Peninsular from our upper floor room. Excellent breakfast every morning, served in the Stable. Evening dinner in the Castle was an excellent fine dining experience. At a cost of $95 per person some people might be put off, but we felt the 4 course meal was well worth the money. Staying at the Lodge gave us free unlimited access to the Castle and the wonderful gardens. For travellers who want to spoil themselves for a couple of days, we recommend this venue

First, the hotel is really nice, modern and the rooms are equipped in a way we did like We met three young members of the staff, and there were very nice to us, making the experience really enjoyable Then there is also an older member of staff, very grumpy, unable to answer service requests (we went back to our room without any of the support we requested) Much worse: she was the driver to the restaurant in the nearby mansion We had to ask several times for her to get us back, until we saw she was drinking red wine in the kitchen. When she finally showed up, she was clearly intoxicated Unacceptable for the service level that this hotel aims for Cant imagine why she is still working for the hotel……. Beside, the menu at the mansion is really not worth it. They have too many guests to serve at the same time, and it turns out to canteen-level food. Go to the seaside instead.

Hello Thank you for your review and direct feedback alerting us to this. We sincerely apologise that you’ve had this experience as it does not meet our standards. We take pride in providing an excellent guest experience where safety is paramount. This is a serious allegation and goes against all of our company policies, procedures, and guest care. As noted in our email correspondence directly with you, we are investigating this in the most serious manner, and it will be dealt with appropriately. Thank you also for your feedback regarding your dinner experience. This experience is in keeping with the historic setting and traditional dinner service, where all guests are seated and served together, house-party style. We are pleased that you had some positive and enjoyable experiences with our hosts and accommodation – we expect this to be the standard for the full experience and are disappointed that it wasn’t so. We appreciate the opportunity to stay in contact with you via direct email channel. Many thanks, Larnach Castle Management

Two nights in a bygone era. Heated bathroom tiles, wonderful heater in room. Gardens as good as any botanical gardens we’ve been in. Beautifully restored dining area in old stables. It’s expensive but worth every cent. The ocean views from our room (27) were spectacular too.

The view from the second floor of the lodge was spectacular. The room was comfortable though it lacked a baggage rack. The breakfast was nice but one day the wait was 50 minutes for our hot order. Being able to see the castle anytime during our stay worked out very well. The castle’s renovation was meticulously done, especially the ceiling work and staircases. Gorgeous.

Stayed here 3 nights in the lodge accommodation. As a guest you have free range of the garden at any time and can pop in and out of the castle at will. We had the $95 supper which was v nice. Nice also to dine with interesting strangers. After dinner one of the staff gave us a tour of the castle. She was brilliant. Very entertaining. Wish we had booked a room with a balcony as views are fab although as a guest you can always find a quiet spot in the garden.

Larnach castle is the only castle in New Zealand. The main castle has been renovated and is open for viewing. The lodges and stables have been converted to guest rooms. We stayed in the lodges. I would describe them as rustic, but comfortable - each lodge had a queen and twin bed. We had a small porch overlooking views of the Otago Peninsula. Castle gardens were well maintained and lovely for an evening stroll. No food served in the evenings other than a Chef's table 5 course menu, which we were unable to participate in due to our 9 pm reservation to see penguins. Breakfast was good with a warm cooked-to-order menu as well as a continental breakfast. The road to the castle was quite narrow and windy for our large Kia Sorrento, but staying in the castle lodges was a unique experience that we are glad we had.

We stayed in Kate's room in the lodge accommodation recently for an overnight date night. We also did dinner at the castle. The whole experience was amazing. Breathtaking views of the Otago Peninsula. Our room was quaint, themed and spotlessly clean. The castle itself was so interesting to look around and being on the castle grounds after hours was pretty special. Dinner was wonderful. We enjoyed the offerings from the chef and actually can't wait to go back.

A two night wonderful stay at this unique accommodation. A special note to the staff who were all so friendly, helpful and amazing, especially Shannon and the 'piano man' Toby. The four course dinners were delicious as was the special cake that my husband organised. Thank you so much for making it extra special.

We loved our stay at Larnach Castle Lodge. The room was comfortable with breathtaking views across the gardens to the ocean. We added the Dinner in the Castle to our stay, which was delicious. Our hosts for the evening were Bella & Hamish; both charming and very professional. Breakfast the following morning was served in the Ballroom Cafe, and this too was very good. Make sure you leave yourself plenty of time to explore the gardens, which are amazing and showcase the owner’s passion to create beautiful memories for you to take away. Our self tour of the Castle was complimentary with our tariff. Very interesting building. Loved all the old furniture, pictures and artefacts throughout the building.

We are travelling from the UK and had 3 nights booked in the lodge over the Easter weekend. On arrival at about 5.30pm we were greeted by a grumpy member of staff who made us feel very unwelcome. We were given the briefest of information told we were too late to book dinner and that we would have to travel to Portabello if we needed to eat. We were told that breakfast is the only meal they serve apart from the private dining room dinner which we did book to have on our last evening and was very nice and well worth doing. That said having been told that no other meals were served we were surprised to see that other guests seem to have received meals delivered to their rooms?? As a previous review mentions some of the staff do make you feel that you are there under sufferance and are unhelpful. The staff could certainly do with training in guest relations. That said the castle is situated in a beautiful location with fantastic views over the peninsula and has beautiful gardens and overall is a lovely place to stay.
