#2 of 64 Specialty lodging in Dunedin
Hogwartz is a Backpacker Hostel with a wide spectrum of room types. Budget travellers enjoy their shared rooms with up to six beds (no bunks) or the private rooms with shared facilities. For those who prefer a little bit more privacy and luxury, they have a beautifully rebuilt, self-contained cottage (the Coach House) available with two en suite rooms and a shared full kitchen. And at the top end of the spectrum, there are two stylish, fully self-contained studio rooms (the Stables) to spoil yourselves with. Per person prices range from $24 to $58 per night, and there is some complimentary wifi at fibre-optics speed. Located a short distance uphill from the city centre, Hogwartz is a hostel for grown-ups: it is not suitable for party crowds or for small children (minimum age 12years). Free car parking is available on surrounding streets, and the walk into the Octagon takes roughly 5min. There are no gimmicks, no false promises here, just genuine quality accommodation and service.

This is a fantastic Hostel. Period. From the greeting we got from the owner as we walked in the door (complete with a walk-around of the hostel and local knowledge about how to spend our time in Dunedin) to the incredible well stocked and laid-out kitchen, the WATERFALL shower downstairs (!!!), cosy TV room and the nook upstairs to read above the dining room, this hostel really punched above its weight. For our proximity to the kitchen and dining room, it was also very quiet which pleasantly surprised us. The only reason I'm giving it four stars is that our double bed was really, really bad. Very soft, lumpy and uncomfortable, and the pillows were lumpy too. Otherwise, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and would recommend this to everyone!

Thank you for your kind review! There is not much we can say, except it would have been really nice to hear this direct from you in the morning. That way, we would have had a chance to check straight away if anything could be done about the problem (occasionally a bed leg or frame gets broken which is hard to notice when changing sheets...). As far as the pillows are concerned, we use only feather which means they generally just need a good shake to fluff them up and redistribute the fill. Please feel free to let us know which room you are referring to, and we'll be more than happy to look into these issues! Many thanks!

The owners were super lovely and helped with all they could, loads of information about what to do while in Dunedin and suggestions where to go to see our wildlife etc. Lovely atmosphere, feels very home like, huge kitchen and loads of showers/bathrooms. Really cool movie room and tones of movies to choose from, great for a crew night or getting to know the other travellers! Such a beautiful view over city lights at night and a 15 minute walk to the mall/supermarkets! All in all, I absolutely loved my stay here. Would definitely reccomend!

I have stayed 3 different weekends at Hogwarz in three of their individual units, -each of the two Stables, and also the Coach House. The accommodation is all spotlessly clean, well heated in winter, and well equipped. -There is even a choice between coffee plunger or percolator! The Stables are spacious studios, each having stylish exposed brick walls, ensuite shower rooms, kitchenettes, and private parking. Both have a double bed (or were theyv queens, I can't remember) and one has an extra single. There is a communicating door that can be unlocked so they can be combined to sleep a family of 5. The Coach House is more of a complete apartment, -we stayed upstairs with a double bedroom, full kitchen-dining room, bathroom and toilet. I believe downstairs with a double bedroom with ensuite can be added to make a 2 bedroomed house. It also has private parking for 1 or maybe 2 cars. Beds are firm, linen is crisp and clean. The area is on a hill, but not an excessive hike up from the city. Walking distance to Speights Brewery -and of course very close to the Cathedral. The owners are friendly and accessible. This has become my favourite short term accommodation in Dunedin.

We spent 4 nights at this centrally located hostel. Well run and in an interesting, funky, huge old house on a hill. Clean with nice amenities. A bit of a haul walking up steep hill to and from downtown but worth it. Especially for Harry Potter fans!
