Detailed Reviews
I stayed here for 2 nights in Feb 2011. Although the building looks a bit dated on the outside, I was pleasantly surprised by the decor and facilities in our room. Excellent location right near Dunedin's beautiful Botanic Garden and there is a supermarket and great pizza place nearby also. The owners were extremely pleasant and helpful, we were permitted to check in VERY early and checkout late with no extra charge! They also offered to take us into Dunedin to join a tour - I highly recommend this Motel.
The only downside is that it is on a fairly busy road - take ear putty or plugs to ensure a good nights sleep!

The room was fine -- clean, comfy, spacious. Bed fair. Location good. But it was our only accommodation during an otherwise marvelous 32-day tour of New Zealand where we felt overcharged and underserved. They not only advertised breakfast as "included" with the tariff, but reacted with downright hostility when we questioned their demand that we pay extra for it.(I say "hostility" because the front-desk manager pursued me across the parking lot and demanded that I show him where on their website it said that breakfast is included. When I showed him-- In a subsequent exchange of e-mails -- he responded that "included" only means "available." Our credit-card issuer later honored our challenge to the charge. The amount in question was small (US$14.70), but the principle is huge, and this property plainly doesn't do hospitality.

We left it late to book a hotel in Dunedin there found most were fully booked. We were fortunate to find the Commodore. Their staff made a real effort to accommodate us. Our room was spacious and comfortable although some of the furnishings were starting to show their age. We could walk into town (30 minutes) with easy access to nearby Botanic Gardens. We self catered for breakfast but visited a nearby Italian Cafe for dinner.

Lengthy 10 day stay and so booked a self catering room. Great size, good facilities and extremely comfortable. The Motel is well located although near a major roadway that does create some noise (back rooms best). Management very friendly and helpful.

I stayed here for a few weeks for work and I was really comfortable and well looked after. All of the staff I interacted with were extremely friendly and helpful which was really lovely. I think my room was probably one of the ones from the photos online/recently renovated because it was definitely one of the nicer rooms in comparison to some of the others, whether they were the single room like mine or one of the two bedders. My room had a little dishwasher which was a godsend after doing big hours at work and then coming home to have a bite to eat - the dishwasher was just one less thing to worry about.
The only thing which I found was a bit of a challenge for me was the guest laundry time being between 3pm and 8pm. In the peak of work, we wouldn’t be getting back to the motel until 7/7.30 and it really cut down our ability to use the facilities. The only piece of feedback I’d give would be if there could be a way to perhaps access the laundry later with the room key, just to be a bit more flexible. But realistically, we made it work.
All in all, I enjoyed my time here, and could recommend it to anyone traveling for business or on a budget. Could never say it was a superstar glamorous hotel - but it did all the important things right which was great.

We recently stayed at the Commodore in a two bedroom unit with my daughter and granddaughter. The unit has most things you would need for an overnight stay. The bed was a little hard but warm enough. The decor is pleasant enough but the kitchen and bathroom areas could do with a little updating. Satisfactory for an overnight stay.

We stayed here after moving to New Zealand. I can't recommend this motel enough. We were personally greeted by the owner who is an absolutely fantastic man. Our little apartment was just perfect. We had a nice little kitchenette, a bedroom, and a living-room. The room was absolutely spotless when we arrived.
They loaned us a high chair for our toddler and even brought in a basket of toys for her.
We stayed during an All Blacks visit and the owners arranged a wonderful little celebration tent that had free food and drinks for the guests, everything was fantastic.
If you're staying in Dunedin, especially if you have kids this is really too good to be true. It's a perfect location (right next to the Botanic Garden and only a 15 min walk from downtown) and the staff are incredible. I can't find a single fault with our stay. 10/10. I would recommend this to anyone coming to Otago.

Stayed for two nights in a studio unit. Enjoyed location of unit which gave me a sense of the busyness of a Dunedin in Feb.. Very clean, great bed and pillows, all amenities provided. Not so sure about shower over spa bath but enjoyed being able to enjoy views onto botanic garden area as I worked. Would definitely return again.
