This is an amazing old building with wide corridors and huge ceilings. This is not an historic building gutted to a shell and renovated, but more an original structure re-purposed. Our 2 bed apartment was huge and very comfortable. There is a nice pool and gym in the basement. Valet parking is simple or there is an outdoor public carpark... More

The rooms are super spacious and the breakfast is very nice, My only complaint is that guests have to pay for car parking - when the hotel is surrounded by a lot of flattened building sites. We stayed here pre-quake. Still a nice hotel.

Dear KimandCheryl Thank you for taking the time to place feedback on Trip Advisor subsequent to your recent stay. We stayed here for a couple of nights at the end of a trip around New Zealand. The hotel is a tasteful conversion of a heritage building, right in the heart of Christchurch. A couple of days before our arrival, there had been a fire at the front of the building, and the signage from the secondary access in the... More

Dear TCB72 Thank you for taking the time to place feedback on Trip Advisor subsequent to your recent stay. The stunning century-old palazzo style building is the work of noted architect Joseph Clarkson Maddison (1850-1923) and is considered to be of ‘monumental significance’ to the city’s architectural heritage. It is a category one listed building and has won numerous heritage... More

This is a lovely old historic building in the centre of Christchurch. We got a 2 bedroom suite for the 4 of us (mum, dad 14 & 12 yr boys). Boys bedroom had 2 single beds and the master, with ensuite, had the most comfy king size bed! We arrived late, nearly midnight. The front desk staff was extremely cheerful... More

Was a little tricky to find at first as their front door was blocked by works. Very convenient location. Walk to cathedral square where theatre is and there are shops and cafes too. Staff are very helpful too. Valet Parking at the hotel is great. Just $15 for a day.

The hotel is part of a history. People's lifes were touched by it as it was a post office. Furthermore, as it is behind the cathedral, the two buildings must be important parts of the society during that time. As a historical/heritage building it survived many earthquakes in the past, even the big one in 2011. However, you will find... More

Very pleasant and helpful staff at this excellent hotel in a very central location. It survived the quake because of extensive strengthening prior to the quake - while buildings all around were destroyed. It's very safe and solid. The suites were huge and my bed was luxurious. There's a great bar near reception that is a must.

Absolutely loved our stay at this hotel. It is a beautiful old building and it’s great to see it still in such great shape after the earthquakes. Loved the mezzanine bedroom in our apartment. Really beautiful old hotel, housed in old government building. Very nicely finished, suites are spacious and comfortable. Two-floor suites are not user friendly when it comes to dragging your luggage up the narrow, twisting stairs - probably a function of the interior architecture of the building and historic preservation requirements and not an intentional design flaw. Staff are very friendly... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Christchurch is a long way from the Mediterranean - nevertheless, the opulence of an Italian High Renaissance Palazzo awaits you at the Heritage Christchurch. Designed by Joseph Clark Maddison and opened in 1913, the hotel is listed as a category one building on the Historic Places Trust Register, reflecting its status as a building of national significance. The hotel's grand design is fitting: after all, Christchurch is regarded as the Garden City, and is regarded internationally for its culture and refinement. ... more   less
