Enjoyed a long weekend getaway to Christchurch for the first time, and as an HH Diamond member decided to give this property a try.
First thing of note is the unique design of the exterior that appropriately fits the property's name. The various interiors were a mix of dated and modern ( and perhaps intentional by design). As others have mentioned already, the ponds and gardens are well-maintained and pleasant to walk around. We enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere of the Den Bar, while the main dining area was less intimate and lacked any real vibe.
The property's location isn't in the downtown area, but you could reach the CBD with an easy 20min walk. As we hired a car, getting around was very easy, plus there is a decent Westfield shopping centre and restaurants a few blocks from the property.
Booked a basic room, but it was still a reasonable size and provided the necessary features and amenities. Furnishings were all in OK condition and the electronics were all up to date, including a large screen smart TV, several USB charging ports around the room, mini bar and a kettle. If I had anything to criticise about the room, I couldn't understand why they built such a small shower bay area in such a big bathroom.
The property seemed relatively busy during our stay, which might explain why finding a parking spot daily/nightly was a challenge, and also why no room upgrade was provided (as part of Diamond benefits). But other than that, I'd consider calling this place home the next time I am back in Christchurch

This is a pretty property with many details focused on customer service and hotel facilities. The garden is amazing! My compliment goes to Harley who serves us in the restaurant during breakfast. Her team is awesome! Overall a great stay here.

There is a lovely courtyard garden; rooms which face the garden have a very nice interior view, exterior rooms look over the parking lot, but even so the streets are tree lined, it’s not too urban. The hotel sits just on the west perimeter of Hagley park; the walk to the CBD is about half an hour, but the park is an especially pleasant walk, either along tree-lined central paths or meandering along the river. We really liked the location, but if your preference is to be steps away from all the cafes, restaurants and services of the CBD, this isn’t an ideal location. On the flip side, an Uber to the airport was 20 minutes and less than $40. The hotel building is, architecturally, more motor hotel than hotel, sprawling in various quadrants, and the soundproofing between rooms, and rooms and the hallway, leaves a lot to be desired. Like, a lot. Our room was spacious, comfortable and the bed was very comfortable as well. The air conditioner worked really well. It would have been nice at the price point to have an in-room coffee option aside from instant - or even a coffee station in the lobby. The bathroom was clearly renovated fairly recently and was nice, but the bathtub was original and refinished with something that was starting to chip off. Our bartender, Luna, despite her busy workload was excellent and had a really positive attitude. The outdoor pool isn’t large but kids will really like it.

I am currently staying in this hotel for 5 nights. I had just stayed at the doubletree in Queenstown and the front desk staff were friendly and smiling. Similarly, so were the DT front desk we stayed in Malaysia and Bangkok. However, this was not the case here. It’s as if the guests are a chore to them and smiling and being friendly will cost them money. Speaking of money, our room was not even cleaned up when we returned in the evening. When I asked the staff, I was told that the rooms are cleaned every 3rd day and this was on the piece of note in the room. First off, this is the 3rd day! The note just stated that the linens are changed every 3 days! I was enquiring why the room was not even cleaned let alone the changing of linens. Mind you, this is the DT which is supposed to be a 4 star hotel. The last motel in Dunedin had IMPECCABLE cleanliness and it is just a motel! Shame on you to use the environmental excuse when we are talking about basic cleanliness. Furthermore, the housekeeping didn’t even vacuum the carpeted floor! I would give this a negative 2 star if it is even possible! The only saving grace is it is located next to the Botanic Gardens and is quiet but that is it.

This Hotel has recently been modernised to a very high standard
Check in was a breeze and we were given clear directions to our room and where to park our car
Upon entering, the room was warm and toasty thanks to the central heating. The one thing we noticed straight away was the size of the room – it was very generous with a huge TV….
The King size bed was very comfortable and we both slept very well
The Shower was a little on the small side but it was perfectly adequate, and the complimentary toiletries they use are very good
Our room rate included breakfast and the buffet breakfast they have there is one of the best ever – plenty of choice for hot and cold food… plus they can make poached / fried eggs or omelettes to order. You must try the breakfast if you stay here
The only downside was the free wifi – we could both connect to it, but it appears that only 1 device can use it at a time… plus it was very slow. There are options to ‘buy’ better wifi, but the free wifi should have at least worked for checking e-mails
Also checkout took a lot longer than it needed to. They had to remove / reverse the charges they had already billed us for, then re-charge us in full again and add the credit card surcharge on… that didn't really make sense to us.
all the staff we encountered were very friendly and welcoming
Overall it was a great stay and we’d definitely stay here again

The hotel is really well located and very attractive. Right across from the huge park and a thirty minute or so walk to town. We had repeated issues with bedding, that brought the resting down.
On our reservation we requested Feather Free bedding, which was confirmed at checkin. Middle of the night sneezing and congestion showed that this had not been done. We commented on it to the desk the next morning and were PROMISED this was going to be fixed for Night 2. Night 2 arrives and the pillows didn’t feel different and I even “undressed” them but the tags didn’t say for sure, and there are non-feather pillows these days that feel like feathers, so off to sleep we went. Only to end up with the same issue: the pillows and duvet were still feathers.
To the desk again, and to the hotel’s credit they fixed it for night three. But this shouldn’t take two mistakes to fix, hence the rating.
Other than that the service was friendly, the place is beautiful and the room was fine.

This quality hotel is perfectly located at the edge of Christchurch’s spectacular botanical garden. The hotel is clean , modern and has a beautiful flower garden of its own in the hotel quadrangle. It has an adequate heated pool , but it’s fitness room was somewhat small. The duty manager and the reception staff were very accommodating and helpful. Unfortunately, we were displeased with the restaurant. The buffet is over priced and mediocre. The dinner service, again, is overpriced for the level of quality that the hotel deserves to provide its clients. In addition, the restaurant manager in the evening, failed to comprehend that allocating the best tables for customers involved in the hotel’s reduced cost packaged deals was unfair and disappointing to hotel guests paying full price al a carte.

This is the 2nd time we've stayed here and it probably won't be the last Check in was easy (as was check out) and we were given a room on the 3rd floor
The rooms are very spacious with a generous closet with plenty of hanging space, large desk / bench, large flat screen TV and a cupboard with a fridge and tea / coffee making facilities, and the bed was very comfortable. They were happy to provide an extra pillow when we requested one. The TV had a large array of channels which was good. Airconditioning was great and the room was always nice and cool when we came back to it
The pool area was very nice and the pool itself was also good - esapecially on those hot summer afternoons!
Our room had a view overlooking the rear carpark, but that wasn't an issue for us - we actually liked the location this room because it was easy access to the restaurant for breakfast and to the car park
The only very minor issue we had was our room had a shower over bath and it was quite a big step up to actually get into the bath. Also some of the 'hot food' items at the breakfast buffet weren't that hot, but the selection available for Breakfast was very good and well worth paying a little extra to get it included.
The Location of this hotel is key - right opposite Hagley park and within easy access to the CBD
we would happily stay here again

We arrived at the hotel a little early, having driven down from Kaikōura that day. I asked at reception if we could leave our vehicle and go for a walk to wait for the official check in time. The receptionist, a delightful young lady called Anna, said that she would check to see if our room had been serviced and if so we would be able to check in then and there. As it happened the room was ready and we checked in. I mentioned that we were booked on the Restaurant Tram in the city that evening and Anna advised that they could drop us off with their courtesy vehicle. At the arranged time we were delighted to find that it was Anna who was driving us there. We had a lovely conversation with her on the drive into the city.

Our stay in one word…magical. The rooms were spotless, and the gardens were like from a set in a movie, flowers beautiful and romantic, not to mention the property is just so well maintained. We'll definitely return and recommend it to our visiting family. This place is clearly run by people who love what they do and do it exceptionally well. Kudos to the management for creating something truly special here.
