Best place to stay in Dunedin. I traveled down a few weeks back with some friends. We're trainspotters so Dunedin is a great spot with the Taieri Gorge Railway nearby. The hostel was lovely, we got the fire going nicely with wood from the pine trees and coal that was provided and listened to some records. The place warmed up...

This is the first time I have ever reviewed accommodation on our travels. However, this backpacker is amazing and I feel that people should know about it. It sits on top of a hill, which means you have views back up the harbour to Port Chalmers and views also of the Otago Peninsula and towards Aramoana. It isn't very far...

Although we had some trouble when check in. But Billy solved the problem very properly. And this house has a great view of the sea and great beach to watch sea lions. Great view in the kitchen. Highly recommend to people who like remote accommodation like me since it is 30 mins drive aways from Dunedin city.

Thank you for making time to write a lovely review. The steep drive can be a challenge but worth it for the lovely views at the top!

Billy Browns was recommended to me by a friend. Having been there, I can see why she endorsed it so enthusiastically. The steep gravelled driveway leads to a rustic lodge perched high on a grassy hill. The views are staggeringly beautiful. On a fine day you can see all the way to Dunedin, watch shipping activity to and from Port...

Billy Browns is a great location from which to explore Port Chalmers, just outside Dunedin. I loved the small town feel of Port Chalmers while maintaining an easy drive into the city (check out the free Otago Museum and tasty vietnamese at Saigon Van in Dunedin). Bill and Anne have done a wonderful job outfitting this three room hostel and...

Great hostel! Could have been twice the price and it still would have been to cheap for great this place is. Its in a great location, on a hill top looking out over the harbour. The owners are super nice. If you have a car and are looking at staying in Dunedin for the night, make the short drive here...

Stayed here for 2 nights in March. I liked the 'welcome'. Even though no one was there on our arrival, those booked in for the night had their names written on their respective doors so you knew which was yours. Fantastic location - perched on a ridge with glorious views of Port Chalmers. We had a double room that afforded...

Another great find: this hostel was recommended to me and I just loved the place. It is right on top of a hill, so you can see all over the peninsula. Billy and Sue are great hosts and really helpful. I took their advise and saw the penguins and the albatrosses for free. The hostel is lovely with its scenic...

When we travel around NZ, we alternate between camping and BBH hostels. On our last trip trip it was raining very hard, so we called in the morning to see if they still had room. After checking the water tanks (it has been very dry this year) we got a call back. We told them we would be arriving late...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Anne and Billy welcome travellers to our quality backpackers. We only sleep a total of 8 people and we have a double room, twin room and a share room for 4 people that can also be a family room. Although we don't have ensuites, we have 3 showers available so plenty of facilities. The large cozy lounge and fully equipped kitchen is a great place for meeting other travellers, or cooking a meal and sitting around the fire and feel like you are in the comfort of your own home. We are only 5km away from the historic town of Port Chalmers the beautiful beaches of Aramoana. Relax and enjoy the spectacular views or enjoy one of the scenic day walks where you can see native birds or might be lucky to see a seal or sea lion or yellow eyed penguin at Aramoana beach. The vibrant university city of Dunedin is only a 20 minutes drive and we are lucky to be close to the Otago Peninsula, a great day out. ... more   less
