Stayed four nights with my partner on a "getaway" ... in one of the premium rooms. Pluses - massive bathtub (my gal is an addict); we both prefer to stay away from the clinical mass-product hotels; very central to CBD and waterfront; bar with open fire is great for an after-work stop-off Minuses - no bar or breakfast on weekends... Thank you for taking the time to review the hotel, all feedback is appreciated. Sadly as we are in the heart of the CBD we cannot get the weekends going for us in the cafe, we have tried many different options but nothing has worked. As you say there are many other options around us. We are working our way... More

We stayed just the one night having come from Auckland by train and booked on the Interislander ferry the next morning, so the Wellesley was in a great location. Our room was huge and so was the bathroom and all decorated in keeping with the heritage of the building. We dined in their restaurant, Cafe 1815, and had a very... More

We stayed at the Wellesley for two reasons-relatively inexpensive at $140.00 NZD for two and conveniently located to the central city and the Bluebridge ferry. We had driven down from Auckland with a brand new car and took the risk on parking it across the road from the hotel. We paid for 3 hours parking which did not need replenishing... More

Step back in time in this quaint old hotel once a gentleman's club. The grand sweeping staircase is good to use, but there is a lift to assist with luggage. Our room (Hornblow) on the second floor looks straight at an office block. Large room and high ceiling. Adequate bathroom. Poor ventilation as aircon needs repair and Windows no longer... More

Thank you for your review. I am not sure if you stayed in this room before it was painted or after it was painted. All the rooms on the second floor have now been completed. We can also assure you that all the windows do open. I am afraid we cannot move the building to offer a view other than... More

The Wellesley is like a step back in time to when hotels were grand and elegant. I only stayed one night but would have loved to have stayed longer. The bed was supremely comfortable and the shower is one of the best hotel showers I have ever had the pleasure of using. This is a great spot too, right in... More

We are so pleased you enjoyed your stay with us. Thank you for your very kind comments. They are much appreciated. With our current programme of renovation we are endeavouring (within the constraints of Heritage NZ) to maintain the elegance and ambience of the rooms. Judging by your comments we seem to be succeeding. We look forward to you staying... More

Needing a reasonably priced hotel near the railway we chose Wellesley. The room very pleasantly furnished; comfortable bed, lovely deep bath. The loo is a tad close to the shower = if you were a larger set person it would be a sqeeze! Is reasonable price for central location.

We stayed for one night, and while the bed was really comfortable, the room was tired for the price we paid. They're obviously renovating one bit at a time. The bathroom was gorgeous. The room was small, and the armchairs are a bit grubby. This place will be fabulous when they've finished renovating it.

I checked in late & as promised my room key was left on the reception desk. I didn't see or hear a single person from that moment to when I checked out the next morning...! So, very quiet! It's a historic building so, considering the above it did have the feeling of staying in a haunted house. But the room... More

Thank you for your comments. It is definitely not haunted but with a 13 room Hotel we cannot afford a full time receptionist although there is a staff member on the premises at all times. It also means that the Hotel is quiet most of the time, certainly at night. All of our rooms and ensuites are different and although... More

This is a favourite place to stay in Wellington. It's right in the city so an easy walk to almost anywhere, but there is nothing else in Wellington that compares to a hot huge claw foot bath on a cold and windy night. A building filled with pakeha history, dark corridors, wood panelling, floral carpets. There's a Masonic Lodge on the second floor. Rosetti Paintings on the wall. The decor is somewhere between Victorian and kitsch. All the haters who complain that the place needs to be refurbished should be ashamed. If you want your hotel to look and feel like another anonymous... More
