We stayed for one night, and while the bed was really comfortable, the room was tired for the price we paid. They're obviously renovating one bit at a time. The bathroom was gorgeous. The room was small, and the armchairs are a bit grubby. This place will be fabulous when they've finished renovating it.

Thank you for your review. We are well under way with renovating our rooms. We cannot close down the hotel while we under take this so are doing one room at a time. The rooms that have been completed look amazing and have received very favourable comments. We have endeavoured to keep the ambience and character of the building in... More

I checked in late & as promised my room key was left on the reception desk. I didn't see or hear a single person from that moment to when I checked out the next morning...! So, very quiet! It's a historic building so, considering the above it did have the feeling of staying in a haunted house. But the room... More

Thank you for your comments. It is definitely not haunted but with a 13 room Hotel we cannot afford a full time receptionist although there is a staff member on the premises at all times. It also means that the Hotel is quiet most of the time, certainly at night. All of our rooms and ensuites are different and although... More

This is a favourite place to stay in Wellington. It's right in the city so an easy walk to almost anywhere, but there is nothing else in Wellington that compares to a hot huge claw foot bath on a cold and windy night. Staff are always helpful and the 1815 cafe has good food, great environment including the fire and... More

A building filled with pakeha history, dark corridors, wood panelling, floral carpets. There's a Masonic Lodge on the second floor. Rosetti Paintings on the wall. The decor is somewhere between Victorian and kitsch. All the haters who complain that the place needs to be refurbished should be ashamed. If you want your hotel to look and feel like another anonymous... More

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. We appreciate your kind comments and pleased you enjoyed your stay. Friendly staff. Rooms are dated, I understand that part of the character of the place but I mean caret in room was thread bare in patches. Bathrooms on the other hand were fantastic. Not many sky channels. Rooms were wam. Minibar well stocked but no price list.

Thank you for your comments. Yes it is dated. It was built in 1921 and is a Category One Heritage building. We have a programme for replacing carpets and have already done so in many areas. Apologies. There should have been a minibar pricelist. It must have been overlooked and we will investigate. Regards Kathleen WBH Guest Services More

A nice old building, with great staff and service. Our room was on the 3rd floor and very spacious with a high ceiling. The bathroom was clean and well maintained, however the room felt worn; other reviewers have mentioned the carpet and wallpaper in the hallway. Some of the rooms may be in better nick, but my impression was a... More

Thank you for your review. Your comments are noted. As you no doubt realise the building is nearly 100years old and it is not an easy task as we wish to maintain... More

Gorgeous building that is tired and in need of a refurb. Plaster chipping away from the walls and threadbare, worn carpet throughout the hotel lets such a charming hotel down, giving it a backpacker sort of feel. I was disgusted at the lack of cleanliness. Hair from the last guest covered the floor, and inside the shower wall and floor... More

We apologise for what you describe as "lack of cleanliness" and staff have been informed. It is an extremely rare complaint as we insist on a high standard in all our services including cleaning and in the majority of reviews cleanliness receives 4 to 5 stars. I am sure had you notified the staff immediately it could have been remedied... More

I have stayed at this hotel on a number of occasions. It is well located in the CBD and close to a number of good eateries. A great place to stay as it is so close to the centre of the city, easy access to trains, restaurants and Lambton Quay. An excellent place for meetings of various sizes including weddings. i liked the way they paid attention to detail at these meetings. Friendly helpful staff. A lovely different historic building.
