The best hostel we stayed in on our travels of New Zealand. Large, comfortable rooms and common areas. Very clean. Large well equip kitchen. 24 sauna is a major bonus. Good location. Easily within walking distance to bars, restaurants, grocery stores and activities. Quality bike rentals. Incredible staff. So welcoming and knowledgable and gave great recommendations. Initially staying 3 nights in a double room, we loved it! The room was well heated at night, there's a clean and spacious kitchen, plenty of seating/tables, plenty of couches, good WiFi, an off street car park, a TV room with sofas and radiators and a tuneful piano, clean showers and toilets, pool table, boardgames, DVDs, books, laundry facilities, a... The staff is very friendly, it's clean and cosy. We especially liked the big kitchen and lounge. When you cook, the gas cooker is just a little bit tricky, you have to be patient. The rooms are nice and warm. We definitely recommend it !

The best hostel beds in NZ!!! Staff is really friendly, common areas are clean, overall a really nice place. They are close to grocery shops and shopping places, restaurants, the coolest McDonalds in the world and the lake. I stayed there 3 times already, 2 nights each time and I would go back for a fourth stay.

From checking in the staff here were lovely. Friendly and informative, Kat gave us a great recommendation of pub for dinner (the Mole and Chicken) and lots of ideas for things to do both inside and out as it was snowing when we arrived. She also gave us two wifi cards which we didnt end up using. We booked an... More

We stayed in a dorm room but ended up moving to a private after a few nights. The dorm room was great, comfortable and clean. The only thing I didn't like was having the private bathroom in the dorm room. Ok, so it's convenient however when you're sharing with 3 guys and they decide to smell the toilet out it's... More

A little too far outside the town for us, and quite a dark walk home too in the winter months in the evening time. Room was a very small double with not much room for luggage. Kitchen space and living space was pretty good they had a couple of lovely house dogs also to brighten up your morning. They also... More

Enjoyed a 3 night stay here in mid-December (double ensuite room). The kitchen area was bustling each evening with loads of people cooking, making for a fun bustling environment. Front desk staff were all very helpful and friendly. Ample parking for our rental car. The back parking area has a gate at night, though the area seemed quite safe. Liked the... More

Thanks so much for your review, we are glad you enjoyed your stay :) We have now introduced a WiFi signal Booster at the hostel which means we have strong WiFi in every room - so weak signal shouldn't be a problem anymore! We hope you enjoyed the rest of your travels! Team Rainbow More

Great backpackers with helpful friendly staff and dog, Jess! Good common area with pool table for a couple bucks and well equipped kitchen. Sauna was a nice bonus! Free off street parking. Best shower ever (ladies anyway!) location is good with a short walk to supermarkets and I-site. Ross recommended a few activities for us and they were awesome -... More

When you rock up to a new town and jump on Google Maps to look for accommodation, its really hard to get an idea of what a place is like. I chose Rainbow for its location, but when you show up, you find a really large complex with heaps of space and areas to find privacy and /or places to... More

Thanks for your honest review, it seems you have found exactly what we are hoping to achieve as a hostel! Our communal areas are the heart and soul of the hostel but we know it's important to have quiet spaces too so it is great that you found just what you were after. Thanks again, and we're glad you loved... More

Hi and welcome to Taupo's original and favourite backpackers. Rainbow lodge was purpose built and designed for the needs of travellers by Mark Dumble (fishing expert??) and Sue Mrozinski themselves seasoned travellers. They had spent several years on the world's highways and by-ways and having accommodation experiences that are sometimes described as "Character Building" they settled in Taupo famous for its Rainbow Trout and beautiful scenery. Having had my own character building experiences I came to rest at Rainbow lodge and worked closely with them for a year before they handed me the reigns. Ross ... more   less
