I did extensive research before our trip to New Zealand and there was no stay that caused more consternation than Solitaire Lodge. It is very expensive relative to other hotels and resorts and from the reviews I knew it was a unique place but struggled to determine if it worth the price. I would regularly check for new reviews as...

it should have been the highlight of our newzealand-trip – so the three days at solitaire-lodge were thought as a christmas-gift to ourselves. overall we were rather disappointed. even the spacious rooms, delightfully situated above lake tarawera, could not offset mediocre servicestandards (mostly dedicated but amateurish), a substandard-breakfast or a 4,50-dollar--supermarket-bubble in the all-inclusive-minibar. we just finished our journey in...

We arrived for 3 nights over new year and meet with the manager who quickly showed us around the grounds and then to room 4. The room was quite spacious with a very good view over the lake. The bathroom was modern however the shower was a little smelly until used. Dinner is served late at 8pm which we found...

Once the imposing gates open you enter and oasis of calm and relaxation . The room had outstanding views with a deck which allowed us to enjoy the sunshine inside or out. The bed was one of the best I have slept in and the place was very restful. The helicopter trip to White Island with them picking you up...

Stayed here for 3 nights with family in the 2 bed room Villa which had amazing views and was exceptionally spacious. Whole experience was fab, staff were all very helpful, especially graham who served up some amazing wines and mark who runs the boat trips It's a very long way to go from the uk but definitely worth it

I would give Solitaire 6 stars if it was allowed. Our group loved this place as the rooms are wonderful with great views of the lake and mountains and the food is top notch. Imagine a printed menu each night describing the 5 courses after having cocktails and appetizers. The staff bends over backwards to satisfy every customer's wish. Put...

We had the best time here. The staff is amazing, the location and views are amazing and our villa is amazing!!!!! We used a travel agency who took care of all our lodgings and they chose this lodge because of all the great things I have already mentioned. It's so quiet and lovely. All our meals were incredible!!!!!

I've been here for my honey moon, this place has the best staff I've ever seen, it's managed by the owner (Wayne) and hi sweet wife, they were more than welcoming and friendly. I felt at home. Location and views were fascinating, luxury rooms and outdoor terrace was just breathtaking. And at last, the foood!!! This was by far one...

The weather throughout our stay was absolutely filthy but it couldn't have mattered less as we hunkered down in the comfort and warmth of Solitaire Lodge. We loved watching the clouds fly, seeing the rain lash and listening to the sound of the wind while watching the flames of the log fire in the drawing room. The bedroom was huge...

Yes it will cost you a pretty penny... However everything was outstanding. The view was absolutely spectacular and it was the highlight of my honeymoon. Not only are you on a beautiful large lake...you are with unique flora, fauna, animals, and Mount Tarawera (volcano). We stayed in a Tarawera suite-I would recommend highly because you get probably the best view...
