We stayed at The County Hotel during the amazing Art Deco week and it was simply outstanding. The Hotel was extremely busy as they are obviously a popular destination during this festive week not only for accommodation but for the restaurant and bar as well, We enjoyed the hospitality offered by the entire staff and while there was a small...

The County needs to be seriously improved before it can stand up and be counted in the luxury category. Room was clean and fairly comfortable, but the bathroom and shower needed updating. There appeared to be a shortage of staff and those in the dining room had very little clue as to what they were doing e.g. G&T served with...

FAB U LOUS! What a great hotel. Rooms are excellent and there is real attention to detail in terms of being true to art-deco style. The hotel has that feeling of " I would like to stay longer". What's more, free parking. Staff are pleasant and attentive. Restaurant and bar meals are excellent. Two small points which prevent me rating...

The hotel itself is fabulous if you want the boutique Napier experience- from a well stocked and free share library to the complimentary port for a night cap the hotel has charm and character few others could offer. What really stood out was the customer service of the hotel- nothing was a problem, and Penny went above and beyond her...

As mentioned before the hotel is getting a little tired in certain areas, however it is still an interesting building. Also mentioned before the restaurant prices do seem quite high but then so do a lot of other hotels too, the food was good as was the service. The best years may be behind it but the staff are excellent....

A delightful hotel in a fascinating city. After the earthquake in the 1930's and the city rebuilt in the Art Nuevo style, this Edwardian building converted to a boutique hotel is a very pleasant experience. The room was quite fine and a good size however could have done with more light to read by. The restaurant was so good we...

The County Hotel was one of the few buildings to survive the disastrous earthquake in 1931. It was converted from business use to a hotel in the 1970's and no expense was spared: all furniture, fixtures and fittings are true to the Art Deco style and are of wonderful quality. We stayed in the Takahe room which was delightful. To...

As mentioned by other reviewers, everyone working in the hotel is friendly and helpful and the service is excellent. It is perfectly located with free car parking opposite the hotel. The Churchill bar serves very good food at reasonable prices. However, the bedroom and bathroom furnishings were somewhat shabby for a 5 star hotel, and we noticed the window areas...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Winner of the Art Deco Supreme Award. The owners of Napier's County Hotel wished to combine the qualities and ambience of some of the finest hotels in the world. They have achieved this by incorporating fine service, fine dining and luxurious accommodation in line with 1930's Art Deco characteristics of Napier. The County Hotel is situated in the centre of Napier which is considered to be the 'Art Deco Capital of the South Pacific' and has captivated the emotions and senses of countless admirers. Originally built for the Hawke's Bay County Council in 1909, The County Hotel is one of only two significant buildings to have survived the massive 1931 earthquake. Faithfully refurbished as a boutique hotel, the County Hotel now stands as Napier's premier Hotel. The hotel is home to an extremely popular, multi award winning Wine Street Restaurant, the superb Churchill's Champagne Lounge, an intimate library, well-appointed function areas, conference facilities and eighteen luxurious guest rooms and offer a variety of accommodation packages. Come and enjoy this architectural masterpiece with its atmosphere of conventional luxury and allow yourself to be pampered by the attentive service of our devoted staff. ... more   less
