Detailed Reviews
A great hotel in a great location.
It was not cheap per night, room was large, and very comfortable, especially the bed but sadly not on the harbour side. It was just perfect as we had been travelling for a few days, and to discover the one bedroom apartment type room had a washing machine and dryer, a full kitchen with a full fridge, dish draw dishwasher, it was a pleasant surprise.
The only fault was the shower was over a spa bath, so not easy to get in and out of.
The housekeeping people were so lovely and very, very helpful, however the reception staff were not so helpful, given they have front of house roles they need to up their game to be considerably more friendly and helpful.

Stayed at the Portside for four nights with our 2 children for school holidays. Had a great deal with 1 night free but would have been way overpriced if we had paid full rate.
Positives: great location, easy walk to town restaurants or beach. Comfy beds and clean tidy room. Reasonably quiet if the port isnt busy.
Negatives: extremely uncomfortable living furniture, couldn’t have taken one more day sitting on the lounge or dining furniture, way over due an upgrade! Tv was a joke, tiny screen and outdated system, sky picture was often such low quality it was unwatchable. Carpet thread bare and lighting also needs serious upgrading. These are things can be easily fixed. Time the portside either drop their rate significantly or upgrade their rooms to match.

+1
We stayed here for two nights while on a roadtrip in late June.
We have stayed here previously. It is not a cheap place to stay but the rooms are roomy and nice.
We were in room 113 on the ground floor, a one bedroom Premium suite. We had a separate bedroom, a large bathroom, a full kitchen (including a full sized oven, full sized fridge/freezer, and a dish drawer) and a large dining room/lounge. There are large windows/glass sliding doors overlooking the lawn and the river/port. Lots of birdlife flying around the lawns and gardens.
Would I stay here again? Possibly. I was disappointed that our bedroom didn’t have a tv in it, though you could see the fixings where one had been. I’d probably look to get a deal rather than pay full price. Compared to other accommodation we stayed in during our road trip, it was pretty expensive. Hence my overall rating of "average".

If you want to be belittled and yelled at look no further. I am shocked by the treatment received by the manager of this hotel who was extremely rude and condescending. When you are spending $1,300 for a room to stay in you would expect to be treated with at least some form of respect, yet instead, we felt incredibly uncomfortable and unwelcomed. The only thing remotely good about our stay was how incredible the cleaning staff were, friendly and helpful, maybe the management should take the opportunity to look at their cleaning staff for a lesson in customer service? I will never be returning here and I will be sure to advise everyone to steer clear when visiting Gisborne

Response from StephanRMR, Manager at Portside Hotel
Responded Jan 2, 2020
Dear IBer2813, Thank you for taking the time to post a review following your recent stay at Portside. We are sincerely sorry that you felt poorly treated by Management on check-in and we do apologise for this. In order to bring some clarity to this incident, we invite you to remember the facts surrounding this incident. As part of a large group booking at Portside during the Gisborne music festival which takes place over three days at this time of the year, the room was allocated to another person, and had been cancelled by the group organisers as the Guest was no longer going to be staying. As staff members of the Gisborne music event, on the last night of the festival, you and your partner arrived at Portside at 3 am, called the resident manager via intercom at the main door, and demanded in a rather rude and entitled manner to be let in to collect the key for the room, this, without prior information to inform us that the room was now required and would be used by a different guest - if only for a Fire Safety aspect, we are responsible to ensure the right guests, including number of guest(s), are the ones staying in the room. In this instance, the room had been booked for one person under a different name. Our reception is open from 7am to 9.30pm and prior communication could/should have been made to ensure the previously cancelled room was reinstated, the right guests were identified, and allowance had been made for a three am check-in. We always endeavour to deliver a welcoming experience to all our Guests and we would welcome discussing this further with you should you wish. Regards, gm@portsidehbc.co.nz

We spent 2 nights here. Won't return. The rate for the room was more expensive than the Hilton in Taupo. Any other comparison to the Hilton ends at this point. The room was on the Port Side of the building and faced South. So no sun in the room at all, The port runs 24*7 so no possibility of sleeping with doors or windows open as the port was loading logs all night. Dishwasher and bathroom extractor fan did not work.
Service was extremely poor. We politely asked if there were better rooms available, we were told - :"If you had wanted a better room, you should have paid more" If they had bother to offer us a better room I probably would have paid more - But the offer was never made. Someone walked into the building with muddy boots, A sign was placed at the door "Please remove your muddy boots" but the mud stains on the carpet were still there 2 days later when we left.
The only upside is there is a fantastic boardwalk straight in front of the hotel that loops all along the bay waterfront. Shame that no one in the hotel told us about it. Very expensive, slack service, poor quality rooms, old furniture. Not returning

We stayed at the Portside because it was the one hotel close to town that had an available room - and now we know why! (Wish I’d read some of the reviews before we booked!!)
After being sold the ‘Premium Studio’ for $295 (!!!) for one night, we were expecting something luxurious, spacious, and modern.
This is everything the room was not!
The room was extremely pokey with a queen bed, only a small kitchenette and no lounge chairs or couches at all. There was only a very dated dining set of two scraped and stained wooden chairs and a painted table.
The bathroom was also TINY - I could touch my fingertips to all four walls! And super helpful that the tap to the shower is BEHIND the shower door! Who designed that?!!!
The balcony (which overlooks a working port!) is standing room only and has no outdoor furniture or a place to relax.
This is the most disappointing hotel we have stayed in in a long time and we will not be back.
Overpriced and dated. Much better/nicer options in Gisborne for much cheaper.

In a word, meh. Clean, sure, and lovely pool, great location, but you pay top dollar here and get nothing special for your money. They should take a few bucks and a couple of days, watch Motel Makeover and try to find some inspiration to make this place special. The front desk staff made themselves weirdly scarce and the lobby smells like ciggies and disinfectant… what a first impression. If they’re aiming for apathetic as to whether guests have a good time or stay again, they’ve hit that mark. Perplexing in the current climate-door must be wide open for a competitor. Stay down the road at Tatapouri Bay instead for WOW factor.

I stayed at this property for one night while travelling en route. I stayed at one of the more basic room types with a view towards the river. I arrived at night in winter and found the bright, well-appointed hotel car park and lobby very assuring.
The room was relatively small but decently furnished and properly maintained. The staff at the front desk was pleasant and efficient to deal with, and they gave good recommendations on local dining options available during that long weekend.
I will consider staying at the property again if I visit Gisborne in the future.

A good sized car park was a good start - having a hire car with nowhere to put it can be a nightmare. The hotel looked very modern and had a very clean appearance. The room was generally lovely. It was large with a self catering section and a balcony. In the restroom the shower was a bit small and in the lounge the TV could have had more channels but all else was good. There was an outside pool. Narrow but long so a proper swim was possible. The staff were efficient although the reception was not manned 24 hours. There was a very small fitness suite. The location was good for sea walks and local restaurants. I would be very happy to stay here again.
