Loved room and location of motel. Had takeaway menu - and got fish to die for. Was a huge amount and as fresh as. Lovely:) Was a wet day when we stayed so other than a quick walk around the grounds ,didn't make use of the walks available. Did drive down to the wee township under the motel the next... More

Price may be a bit high because it is one and only place in the middle of nowhere. Have own restaurant. Have to wait forever to get our food. Open area outside to sit and have any meals. Food is just average. Room is just okay. Bed is nice and clean and comfortable.

Well disappointed, lovely view from the higher cabins, nice well tended grounds and what looked to be a nice pool. Then it went to rags, small cabin gloomy and smelly, window sill covered in grass cuttings because windows had been left open, and nobody had bothered to clear it up. Bathroom very small, shower looked awful so we didn't use... More

People running motel very nice. Meals in restaurant good. Room we had was clean but average. Shower and toilet old and cramped. Shower still had "old style" curtain and nowhere to put soap and shampoo. As a monopoly they get away with it, need competition to lift their presentation and look at tariffs.

We stayed one night at the same tariff as we paid for far superior motels and hotels on our recent trip around the East Cape and Hawke's Bay ($150.00). The best part of it was the comfortable bed. The unit smelled old and stale (probably smokers). Bathroom and kitchen facilities were so old and minimal - all odd crockery and... More

Wow. East Cape is a beautiful part of New Zealand. Hicks Bay Motel Lodge is perfect. Unpretentious. Friendly and helpful staff, comfortable and clean, amazing location with stunning views, reasonably priced, true kiwi hospitality. I totally recommend this place. If you are a tourist and looking for a true New Zealand experience this is it. If you are a kiwi... More

Arrived quite late in the evening after the official dinner time. My girlfriend had also booked the incorrect day. The manager was the bodiement of east coast Maori charm and promptly corrected Michelles mistake and bought a 3 course meal to my room whilst I showered off the dust of a 100km road cycle. The room was beautifully presented and... More

We stayed here one night on our trip. The room was a good size and the beds wonderful. The place is a bit dated but it's absolutely good enough. We had dinner there. I did not enjoy my seafood platter but that is mostly due to the fact that I hadn't expected everything to be deep fried. The service at... More

We had a double room with ocean views. It had been recently refurbished and was very comfortable. The meals were good and service very friendly. The view over the bay was beautiful from both our room and the dining room. We arrived a little early but this was no problem and we were given our room straight away.

My wife and I stayed here overnight on our way from Rotorua to Gisborne. We drove via Whakatane and Opotiki. Make sure you fill up with petrol at Opotiki as there is nowhere to buy petrol except at Te Araroa (east of Hicks Bay), where there is only one self service pump (pay first by credit card) and hope their...
