I can't believe some of the reviews I am reading here. This is a small town and as remote as you will find in the North Island. Six of us had an amazing trip fishing with Coastal Fishing Charters and to go back to our accommodation for an amazing meal and well priced drinks was just so good. This is a very small community in a very remote part of NZ and to get a steak of the quality we had was amazing. If you don't like NZ as it used to be then go stay somewhere else. Lovely people, great food and decent lodgings. Try being nice to the staff and they will return that in bucket loads. !00 times better than we expected
I have stayed at Hicks Bay Motel a few times over the years, while I see quite a few negative reviews its not easy running a motel in such an isolated area.I do think that both the rooms and the food in the restaurant are way overpriced for the quality provided. We recently stayed in inner city Wellington and paid less for accomodation and paid about the same for a main in very nice Wellington restaurant. The staff were good but were absolutely run off their feet so a long wait for food and drinks ,no sign of the owner. The view is great and the grounds well kept.If id paid about 20% less I would have thought the value was OK
We stayed in a room at the far end, with views out over the water. Fab views!!! Lovely to walk outside and enjoy the vista. Accommodation very basic and a lot of maintenance is needed but it was a convenient stop before summiting Hikurangi the next day.
The staff epitomise the value of manaakitanga, they know how to look after their guests., elders. Nothing seemed to be a problem in meeting our needs. The food and entertainment was great. An additional bonus was the views from our rooms.. We were very comfortable.
We stopped off here for a night with our 2 young children and absolutely loved it. Stayed in the 2 bedroom self contained unit which was ideal. Stunning views, great kids playground, picturesque coastal walk direct from the lodge, and a glow worm grotto! Location was 5 stars - you could imagine it being the site for NZs newest luxury lodge. Luckily for us the original rooms remain and are therefore affordable!! Accommodation is definitely older retro style, but comfortable and clean enough. We enjoyed a pre-dinner drink with views on our own deck, while the kids played happily on the playground right next to our unit. Then an easy stroll up to the restaurant for dinner, where we enjoyed a sumptuous meal of steak and salmon. The food quality was excellent - yes it’s expensive, but if you want a delicious high-quality dinner in the middle of nowhere it costs a bit extra! Worth every penny in our view! Being able to visit our very own glow worm grotto with the kids after dinner was the icing on the cake. Honestly loved our time here - it was a real adventure! Staff were friendly and helpful, accomodation comfortable and reasonably priced, stunning location, cool and quirky amenities, and a fantastic restaurant. Come with reasonable expectations and an open mind and I’m sure you’ll love it too. Highly recommend!…
